R ' any-my R- A Senior's I-lomily Less than a decade ago we were confronted with a state of affairs which dared not to be challenged. Mankind was thriving, producing wealth, accu- mulating wealth, spending wealth, but few contelnplated the values of life beyond the Material. This error brought all of us untold grief and few of us will outlive our dreaded experience. We, however, are 11ot the 1I10SlI un- fortunate of those who have thus suttered because of inaterialisin. VVe are tl1e youth of the land living in a state of flux which will turn largely as we desire it if we are wise enough to evaluate life correctly. Ours is a 116W era of living Zllld one which will produce history for all the worlds of all times. This new era is characterized by a inind for the scientific, for industry, for the professions, and indeed for any phase of life wl1icl1 does not neglect the spiritual. Those who dare forget that they are their brother's keeper shall soon realize that the world has labeled thein and placed theni on the shelf as an exhibit for tl1e race of tl1e future. Countless thousands have thus been branded only to realize tl1at their one way of salvation was that of laboring for their fellowlnen even though it be for naught. Shall we as graduates neglect their bitter experiences and again make this fatal mistake? Shall we once more center our affections on those things wl1icl1 give us o11ly more encumbrances rather than liberties and true enjoyment? Shall we again ex- aggerate the spirit of getting and inininiize the spirit of giving? Shall we tolerate the selfish when tl1e unsellish is so evidently in deinand? Ours is an age of a new order of thought. One in which we must empha- size living rather than the inaking of a livingg the enjoying of time rather than the wasting of timeg tl1e doing of deeds for the conunon good ratlier than the hoarding of goods to ourselves. If we, as Seniors, have not caught this spirit of living we are not yet ready for the COIIlll1CI1C0ll10I.li1 of life in an active society. Our course in school has been replete with opportunities for work, for play, for social contacts and all of these for the developinent of our characters and personalities. If we have not caught this spirit perhaps we were mentally blinded by disturbing influences or perhaps we were yet the product of a society which has outlived its usefulness. lf thus has been our misfortune let us speedily hasten to ainend our ways. lf we have already prepared our- selves for the world of the i1111nediate future let us grow ill XVlSd0lI1 and stature for the sake of its coinplete fllli'il1Ill'llf. ln the words of the i111111ortal i'llll-l'1'SUll we sunnnarize Olll' conclusion and say with him: Wliife is 100 .vhorf to waste In. rzrifie peep or cynic bark, Q'll1ll'l'l'I or l'f'llI'i7l1lHldS 'Twill soon he durkj lfp! mind flzine ozrn aim, and God xpccrl the mark! YVho wonldn't have been excited? They had come to take the examination to prove whether or not they were worthy to be called l4'reshman. August twenty-ni11tl1 of the same year brought that same group of boys and girls back to the high school building. Hy this time they were no longer excited, but rather tillllfl Freshman. Sometime during the tirst few months of school we received our initiation. NVQ- took this as a joke so that we might prove to the other students that wc had already learned to show the true school spirit. Un the Friday before Easter our class held an Easter egg hunt in which the entire school participated. lVe are sure that everyone enjoyed himself. YVe were very sorry to lose some of our classmates of our l 1'CSlllllilll year and we wish them success in whatever task they are engaged. Too quickly our first year of high school life was over. lVe left the school preparing to return the next fall and use that valuable and sound advice, which our teachers had given us. ln August, 1934, we came back to school eager to learn. Since we were no longer Hbabiesv, we took an active interest in onr lessons and especially in our sports. Our inter-class games proved exciting entertainnlent for our noon-hour. Several of our remaining members left our class during the Sophomore year. However, we welcomed two new members-Betty I7eArment from Eric, Pa., and Dorothy Noden from Chester, Pa. On the twenty-tirst of February, we presented a program consisting of a movie entitled Our United States and slides of interesting parts of our country. Our class officers for the Sophomore year were: President, Paul Zimmer- mang Vice-President, Ruth lleckg Secretary, Virginia Hhoadsg and Treasurer, Richard Steffy. lVe, the Sophomore Class, extend our congratulations to tl1e Senior Class for having attained that goal to which they have been striving, and sincerely hope that by protiting from any mistakes which they have made- we may as successfully reach our goal. Those of us who sue- ceeded ill passing it were anxious to ent-er high school. On August 27 fifty-eight of us arrived at the high school building eager to begin our tasks at once. We knew that a Fl'0SilIll2lll initiation would be awaiting us. llowever, we received it pleasantly and proved to the upper Ci2lSSlll0Il that we were 11ot slackers. After several weeks had passed during which we had become better acquainted, we inet to elect class officers. The following ofticers were elected: President, Cyrtus Rodgers: Vice-l'i-esideiit, l'anl Weaver: Secretary, Oliver ilessg 'l'reasurer, Betty Heller. It was decided that each lIll'Il1iN'l' should pay tive cents a llllllliil for class dues. Then we directed our attention to clubs. Most of the girls chose the Glee Club, while the boys selected the Outdoor Club. A lar-fe number of the bov' are also Il1C1I1b0l'S of the Boys Ulee Club. r- .3 lVe have shown our ability llllf only in classwork but also in the inter- class basketball and volleyball games. One day Mr. Czapf, our class adviser, decided to take us on a hike. A large truck conveyed forty of our ineinbers to Millersville. Starting from that place we took a long hike along the bank of the Conestoga River. In the evening a eonibined doggie roast and inarshniallow toast was enjoyed. We Freshmen. have high 2liIllS. XVe hope that in the spring of '38 we may have becolne the largest and most sincere and intelligent class that has ever been graduated from East Lainpeter High School. XVe, the F1'0Si1IIlilll Ulass, congratulate the Seniors and hope that they may some day reach the goal for which they will continue to strive. May the years spent in your Alma Mater be always relnelnbered with highest esleeni. As you are 11ow to face new tasks, inay you approach theln with a deterlnination which will only terminate in great success. We pray God's richest blessing upon you as you begin your new endeavors. ALUMNI NOTES As we review the Associations activities ot the 'past year, we are tirst reminded of the banquet held in the high school anditoriuin with one hun- dred and fifty persons present which included the Vlass of 193-1 as our guests. A line prograui featuring tl1e inagician, Ainazo, was enjoyed by all after partaking of a healthful nieal. The response we received froln the lI161l1b0l'S and their friends on this occasion is indeed gratifying. Last year for the annual picnic a corn-and-doggie roast was substituted. This function was held in llostetter's Park in Bird-in-lland. About one hun- dred and twenty individuals gathered to enjoy an evening of games, music, roast corn, and doggies with all the trinnnings. XVe feel that this substitution is justified in view of the fact that only about forty persons attended the pic' nies while the number attending the corn roast exceeded this nuinber by eighty. Again this year the Alunini sponsored the lixteinporaneous Speaking Contest. The contestants were seven lneinbers of the Senior Flass. The judges Mrs. WVI11. Ijlllllilj Mrs. 1':1'll12l Lutz '20, and Rev. George L. Overley '29. First prize was awarded to Miss Mary Letevre, second to Mr. Frank Herr, and third to Miss Edna lllocher.
