A Gymnastics ls Impressive The Girls' Gymnastics Team after a slow start finished their season with an impressive 15-2 record, They finished first at the Mona Shores Invitational, third at the Ann Arbor Pioneer Invita- tional, second at their Con- ference lnvitation, second in Regionals, and took a fifth place in the State Meet. The team was dominated by freshmen, four of whom com- peted at the State Meet. They were Denise Chatlosh, Sherri Goorhouse, Shelli Mulder, and Sherri Smith. Returning Co- Captain Valerie Lindsey and All-American Jodi Thompson brought the needed experience into state competition. Pride, dedication, and love for the sport of gymnastics has brought much success to all the team members, commented Coach Barb Moerdyke. The girls put forth a lot of effort prac- ticing every day under the guidance of Coach Murray Lindhout. The team's greatest assets were sophomores Shelly and Missy lsler with their spiking abilities and Freshman Jennifer Henry and Sophomore Cherri Mastbergen with their setting. K ll v 1 1 i A 1 - 1 a., Best YBHI' EVBI' f0l' DY Swimmers The Boys' Swim Team had the best year ever! After a disappoin- ting loss at the Raider Relays, the team went on to a 15-1 record. They won their conference meet by a gap of 165 points. The highlight of the season came on March 12. All their hard work paid off, because for the first time in East Kentwood's history the Boy's Swim Team took first place in the State Meet. Not only was the team outstanding, but many individuals achieved All- State and All-American status, in- cluding: Dan Andrus, Jeff Clark, Chuck Karston, Jeff Kuhn, Steve Larson, Dominique Ratinaud, Brian Westra, and diver Eric Gale. Rich Lehman also placed in The State Meet. According to Coach Jock Am- brose, Class A Swim Coach of the Year, There was fantastic im- provement in the younger swim- mers so the end of the year was not only gratifying because of the State Championship, but because they will be a team to be reckoned with for many years. tAl The 1982-83 Boys' Swim Team. tBJ Eric Gale in championship form. tCJ Steve Larson congratulates Brian Westra after he qualified for State.
