Varsity Wrestlers Do Commendably The East Kentwood Varsity Wrestlers, coached by Rick Smith, performed commendably during the 1983 season. The team com- pleted a 2-5 dual conference record. This is not a true indica- tion of our team because of the many forfeits that we have been giving in most duals, remarked Smith. However the Varsity team did place third in the conference tournament, with seven out of ten wrestlers placing. The team also had top perfor- mances in the region, in which they placed fifth, and in districts, finishing third. Kentwood had three participants compete in the State Finals. They were Mike Sciba, who finished sixth, Kevin Anderson who placed in the top twelve, and Scott Packer, who took the Class 'A' Title. tAl Jeff Bertucci has a hold on the situation. The Varsity team finished with an excellent league record of 15-7-3. Although they did not win the suburban championship, Kentwood had the highest scoring accuracy in league play. After qualifying for the Ford Cup playoffs, they finished with an im- pressive second place. The Hockey team went on to capture the Regional title, allowing them to go to the State Finals. Here, their reign ended when they were defeated in the quarter finals. A few of the outstanding players were Randy Grubbs, Kevin Hausch, Kevin Timm, Steve and Greg Lankfer, and Stuart Scobie. Even though most of the team's members were inexperienced, their spirit and determination outweighed their negative factors, making a con- ference record of 5-2. A few of the top team members were Mike Forde with 30 takedowns, Rick Simons with 18 escapes, and Ken Mills with 17 reverses and 20 three-point near- falls. Darryl Oliver had the fastest recorded pin in 18 seconds. The J.V. team also had some top places in lnvitationals. They took second in the Battle Creek- Lakeview Tournament, third in the East Kentwood Invitational, and fourth in the Northview Tournament. QAQ Don Ferris in the referee's position. lBl The 1983 J.V.
