Outstanding Performances in Fall Play Our Town was this year's fall play. Our Town is a dramatic play written by Thornton Wilder with the plot centering around an average town in the United States. The Cast, performing on an almost bare stage, successfully presented the true meaning of this play with close to professional acting. They relied on their own skills of pan- tomine and expression to convey their appreciation for life and its true values. Ms. Barbara Wepman directed the play and was assisted by Mrs. Connie Hubble. Outstanding performances by Darryl Kurylo in the demanding role of the Stage Manager as well as Jill Jones, Bob Richardson, Renae Morway, Eve Butterly, Jeff Jenkins, and Mark Wolfe made this play an event to remember. All the people involved should be proud of their production of Our Town. QAJ Renae Morway waits for her cue. QBJ All eyes are on Darryl Kurylo, the stage manager. tCl Jill Jones and Mike Schaner at the breakfast table. QDJ And another thing! iEi The cast relaxing after their final performance. Tryouts were held January 10- 11, and cast members were chosen by three factors: singing, acting, and dancing abilities. All of the cast did a super job and all of the main characters, such as Jill Jones tNelliel, Bob Richardson tEmilel, Renae Mor- way tLiatl, Stuart MacAskie tJoe Cablel, and Eva Bornefalk tBloody Maryl let their talent show through on the Kentwood stage! The show was a big success with about 1,500 people attending and enjoying the dancing and singing. Many felt this was one of the best shows ever performed at E.K. Everyone seemed to enjoy both doing the show and watching it. Students were dismissed from class to attend during different hours of the day. This gave the students an opportunity to look into the future and discover many dif- ferent careers. The most popular event of the day was when the National Guard land- ed a helicopter in the front parking lot. The 80 other displays, covering every career from bartenders to lawyers were in the field house. The most popular ex- hibits were those of the Armed Forces. Other schools in the area also joined the activities of the day. There were four students who made the trip down to Kalamazoo Community College for the State Finals. They were Mike Palmer and Ted Bonarski, first and se- cond affirmative, and Herb Hodde and Torsten Toms, first and se- cond negative. Another accomplishment of the Debate team was their first place finish in the Wooden Shoe Tourna- ment. N gf . eses Band :rector After long and dedicated service to the music students of Kentwood Public Schools and particularly to EKHS, Band Director Donald Druart decided to call it quits at the end of this school year and head back to college to earn a higher degree and to broaden his horizons . Mr. Druart made the shocking announcement at the annual band and orchestra banquet. I wish to continue to develop my skills as a conductor of both instrumental and vocal music to update my education in the contemporary areas of music, computers, recording techniques and jazz, he ex- plained. The decision wasn't easyg however the thought of making it has been in my mind for several years, he confided. Mr. Druart taught for Kentwood Public Schools for 19 years, including several at elementary levels. After six years at Valleywood Middle School, Mr. Druart came to the high school in 1970. High points in Mr. D's career at EKHS include the first ever Number One rating for Symphonic Band at State Festival in 1975 and greeting President Ford twice at the airport with the Marching Band. He also enjoyed directing the pit orchestras for musicals such as Fiddler on the Roof. I will miss working with the kids and watching them become mature musi- cians, commented Mr. Druart, but I won't miss the paperwork or having to give students grades, he admits. Academics 131 Skills Centers Are Second School for 140 EK Students Kent Skills Centers provide an alternative way of learning by doing instead of just reading. Kent Skills Centers serves 20 school districts and 32 high schools in which juniors and seniors par- ticipate. There are two locations, one located on the east Beltline and the other on College Avenue. Kent Skills Centers offer 35 different programs ranging from accounting to welding. These daily sessions last two-and-a-half hours daily, half of the school day in the home school and half in the Skill Center. There are about 140 students from East Kentwood attending Kent Skills Center each year. 1Al Tammy Brewer, cosmetologist. QBJ Future Plumbers of America. QC! The 1982-83 Skyliner Yearboo could not be dedicated to a mor respected and dedicated persol than Mr. Paul Kempter, for 2 years a reference librarian for Eas Kentwood High wchool as well a the previous Kentwood Higl School of 44th Street. Mr. Kempte retired at the end of this year am was feted with more retiremen parties than any staff member ha: ever received. Mr. Kempter was famous for hit Muppet lunch box, string ties bifocal half-glasses and a desl piled high to the point of obscuring him with papers and books whicl he hoped someday to deal with ii the way that reference librarian: are supposed to deal with things He also was noted for his bulletir announcements, which were unique in their classical language satire and profundity. In a recent comment, he admit- ted, lt's going to hurt not to see my colleagues every day, but I gc with a sense of relief - there are so many details involved with run- ning a library. But I enjoyed the details. He added with a wry smile, ln spite of the look of my desk, l'm a fussy pettyfogger. Mr. Kempter hopes to return or occasion to visit. He also plans tc continue enjoying classical music concerts, plays and reading as well as a little tennis and some traveling. Goodbye, Mr. Kempter.
