JOHN SHEVROVICH 'We never know how high we are till we are called to rise. - Emily Dickinson ln our desire to protect and provide for our youth we educators and parents have our flaws. We are sometimes prone to so emphasize self-preservation, self-sanctification, self-development, and self-en- joyment as to create the impression that the one mission in life is 'to take care of oneself. Everyone should have a reasonable interest in his own material comforts. However, we would be remiss in our duties if we did not urge you also to devote time and energy to provide personal leadership in the struggle for the improvement of conditions of all mankind. What can you do by yourself? You will never know your own capacity until you try. Few of us will win awards in this life for exceptional deeds or works of art. For most of us there is no quick, easy or lazy way. It is a question of daily plodding, often in the face of dlscouragement, misunderstanding, and obstacles. But each day presents thousands of opportunities, large and small, for reaching out to the world as far as we can. You have only to grasp the chance. Any day is a good day to start, especially today! Under the fine coaching of Dave Fultz and the leadership of Russell Harvey and Floyd Comell the Trojans of East Jackson showed one of the finest Basketball teams in the school's history. The Trojans, losing but one game during regular season play, won the conference, district, and regional championships before bowing in the quarterfinals to Kalamazoo Christian, the team that went on to become the state Class C Champs. lt was through great coaching, fine team play and spirit, and an extreme desire to win that the Trojans reached such great heights. To climax a great season, Ron Hudson, Floyd Comell, and Russell Harvey were named to the All-Conference team, and Harvey made several All-State selections as well.
