The Leprechaun by Stephen P. Hogan Did you ever hear the story of the famous Leprechaun? The little Irish Elfin-as scarey as a fawn- He comes when youlre a dreamin' in a listless sort of way, And coolly stands there smilin' without a word to say. He's little and he's wrinkled, yes, the sprite is ages old, And if you can keep from winkin' sure you'll get a crock of gold. You mustn't speak a whisper 'bove all you mustn't groang And hand in hand he'll lead you o'er many a weary stone. O'er bog and hill and meadow, o'er piles of drying peat, But you mustn't show you'rc weary and you mustn't mind your feet: If you're anxious for the treasure-the crock that's full of gold- He'1l surely lead you to it if you show you're brave and bold. He seems to shed the water while you get soaking wet, But don't you mind the rascal, and listen! don't you fret 3 For he'll soon be after leavin'-there's other folks to tryg And he'll lead you to the treasure if he doesn't hear you sigh. He'll maybe try to scare you or fool you with the drink, But hold your tongue and plug along, and wirrah! don't you wink. Hold on a little longer, forget the thorns and cold, And you'll be travelin' homeward with your pockets full of gold. Now this little Irish Fairy, you'll find him every placeg Tho' he's changed his form entirely and you wouldn't know his face. He's the servant of all mankind, the guide to Wealth and Fame, But now they call him Courage-sure, they've simply changed his name! 2
