1899 1949 The present high school was started in the spring of 1924 and opened in the fall of 1925. The school board who authorized this was: Austin Taylor, John Ritchie, D. F. Cowan, E. C. Null, F. C. Dell, George S. Hixson, and J. Henry Bair. The new high school was built in the most modern style. It contains a large gym, showers and dressing rooms, auditorium, cafe- teria, library, offices, science laboratory, and modern class rooms. Recently an electric bell system, intercommunication, and pub- lic address system have been added. In 1930 the school was reorganized into a six-year high school. In 1930 the first buses were used for transporting all pupils. The vocational agriculture course was added to the curriculum in 1928, in 1930 the shop course was added and in 1932 the home economics de- partment was also made a part of the high school courses. The graduating class of 1949 has seventy-one members. The total present high school enrollment is five hundred and twenty-five. Today's faculty includes nineteen teachers, a school nurse, school secretary, high school principal and supervising principal. As we look at our high school achievements, we can truly say that East Huntingdon Township is still interested in progressive rural education. Our aim has always been to help our school live up to its motto: Second to None. 4

1899 1919 The high school classes soon proved to be so popular among the citizens of our township that it was necessary to separate the high school from the grade school students. Funds were soon collected for a large, modern building. It was finally decided to erect the new school across the road from the old grade school. This structure was completed in 1900. It was made of red brick and contained four large class rooms and an oHice. Much credit must be given to the members of the school board who undertook this task. These members were: Mentor Gainey, John K. Fox, Byron Kelley, Michael Mathias, J. J. Houser, and W. O. Cowan. The curriculum was expanded to include a commercial course and music. The graduating class of 1925 had 33 members, and the three underclasses averaged 50 members each. There were seven faculty members all holding college degrees. Extra curricular activities that year included: Webster and Sumner Debating Societies, Glee Club, Library, Class Plays, Radio Club, Yearbook, Orchestra, and Football. By 1925 this school had reached its capacity, so it was decided to build a larger, more up-to-date high school. Now this old school serves as a grade school building but East Huntingdon graduates from 1900 to 1925 still call it Alma Mater. 3
