The scene which confronts us is one of excitement and activity. What period is this? is a typical query of a confused seventh grader. Neverthe- less it isn't long before these greenhorns have become acquainted with school routine Now the scene changes and last years seventh gradels are one year older and wlser They look down on the new seventh graders with expres sions of mingled superiority and contempt Time marches on' We see the eighth graders next as fullfledged high school students Lets peep into their class rooms Here we spy the poor Freshies wading through Latin or scratching their heads over a tough algebra problem This year the class is well represented in extra curricular act1v1t1es having members in Tri H1 Y the musi cal organwatons Forensic Club F F A and F H A and the basketball and track teams The football schedule was cancelled because of the death of John Zublc so the boys who display ability on the gridiron have yet to experience their first year of varsity football Now that we have witnessed the highlights of their freshman year lets move on We flip several pages of the calender It is September of 1938 and here we are at E H H S again Why whats going on over there? It looks like a con ference of some sort There are Dorothy Hill Dorothy Pritts Betty Brown and Barbara Poole with their heads together Yes Its a meeting of the sophomore class officers They are probably plotting some new activity to keep those sopho mores busy They have the reputation of being the pepplest and the no1s1est class 1n the chool The sophomores are very proud and rightly so of winning the inter class basketball tournament Swiftly the months pass until the autumn of 39 rolls around The Junior Class Pliy which IS the class s first attempt in the field of dramatics IS a big success The Jun1orSen1or Prom which they have been anxloulv awaiting throughout the school term cllmaxes the ex ents of the year 1 ffrceuf me Wolff! 2 U, . . We ll have to work haider yet if we want our program to be a success said Mis Hyatt trying to arouse the interest of these fine singers After a few weeks of intensiwe training the group was ready at last for the long anticipated opportunity to broadcast Althougn it was thought at first that the event might have to be postponed because of the heavy snowfall that made highway travel exceedingly dangerous and difficult most of the girls managed to get to school that day even though it was lust in time to start to Greensburg Along with them went the newly formed boys trio composed of Donald Jones John Krystynlak and James I Sherrick who gave their arrangement of Wagon Wheels Because so many girls wished to belong to the glee club it was necessary to dlX1d9 the organization 1nto three sections This year was indeed a busy one for them however Besides singing over the radio But the crowning event of all was the County High School Choral Festival held at South Huntingdon High School on April 27 An 1m portant feature of the program was a mass chorus of one hundred fifty voices under the direction of Miss Borge from the Indiana State Teachers College Also there were eight diferent schools represented in the unit divisions each of which rendered two numbers In the music classes Mrs Hyatt secretly searches for hidden talent It is here that many of oui quieter students give vent to their emotions and iom in singing Anchors Aweigh as enthusiastic ally as others KAY AND GERDA On April 4 the operetta entitled Kay and Gel da was piesented by a cast numbering 235 of which 180 were chlldren from the grade schools of the township The others including those participants tak ing leading roles were chosen from the junior high school grades. Kay and Gerda portrayed by Jack Lowstetter and Virginia Sutor were life-long playmates until the Snow Queen Virginia Fulmer carried him off to her snow palace of silver and blue. When Gerda discovered that her little friend was gone she went in search of him. The Snow Queen had promised the Witch Dorothy Minster that she would keep the snow away from her. The Witch lived in the land of flowers. However it was Rose Janet Howard who finally revealed how Gerda might find her lost playmate. When at last she found Kay alas! he didnt remember her because he was under the Snow Queen s magic spell. Nevertheless after several attempts Gerda succeeded in restoring Kay s memory and like all other fairy story characters they lived happily ever after. The stage scenery on which any operetta depends greatly for its effectiyeness was done in the excellent manner that characteri7es the work of our art department. Likewise the flow er costumes repre- senting the rose xiolet snow drop narcissus and tiger lily were very realistically created. One might easily haxe imagined them as being changed to giants of their former selves by the magic of some fairy's wand. df Jfccenf on QMJM 38 f ' A U Q ' I Wm wal QIQQQG . . . M za en ,, . . . A . J, , 0 , f, , 44 FOOTBALL There were tense moments as the football squad gathered in the gym and awaited final in- structions before the first game of the '39 season with Washington Township. The head coach, Mr. Tomechko, said, Well boys, now's the chance to redeem yourselves after the last year's unsuccess- full season. I know you can do it, so go out there and give all you have. A few minutes later the teams were lined up and the whistle blew for the kick-off. Our boys fought with the fury of the old East Huntingdon spirit and pushed acress the goal for the first six points. Enthused by this, they piled up seven more points before the game ended. Our one night game, scheduled with Mt. Pleasant for October 17 at the Mt Pleasant stadium was played on a field that had been soaked bv a continuous two day rain The game turned out to be a return of kicks since the muddy field prevented actual running The last game of the season was with our greatest rival Scottdale Haxing had a very suc cessful season they expected to defeat the East Huntingdon Bulldogs by about ten touchdowns Howexer ou1 bovs buckled down on them and held them to a score of 28 0 Although our season vias not entnely suc cessful it proved that East Huntingdon has some real mfiteiial in the making The season ended with two xictories and SIX defeats l fF el 21203012 eg26IJOIl FOOTBALL SCOREQ hngtn T Dub a l p M Pl H SI' ROV!
