Eaton, better known as Larry, was a member of the S Club and held position of end on the East High Football team. After graduation from East in 1947 he attended Superior State for one semester. Because of his friendliness and vivacity, we miss him deeply. We do not know, we cannot see The wisdom of His ways; Yet we must trust Godes loving hand In guiding us always, And that through darkest shadows His kindly light will lead To give us faith for every doubt And strength for every need. $9in f3 0 DEDICATION C. Ivar Haglund With gratitude and respect we, the class of 1949, dedicate this Wa Wa Ta to Mr. Ivar Haglund who has been a member of the East High School faculty since September 1940. As the instructor of biology, the students remember him as an inspiring and excellent teacher. As the dean of boys, many will recall his sympathetic understanding and sound advice. In both these capacities his sparkling Wit and wholesome philosophy of living have endeared him to all students. The Wa Wa Ta Staff greatly appreciates the many hours he has so will- ingly spent at home preparing the numerous pictures for this thirty-eighth volume of the Wa Wa Ta. East High students are indeed veryifortunate to have the privilege of working under the splendid leadership of Mr. Haglund. i me-wb ZZoWu-qdm; fmwgb J anice DeMars ' . The Wa Wa Ta Staff this year included members from the sophomore, the junior, and the senior classes. However, the heaviest responsibilities were assumed by the seniors. The staff was very fortunate this year to have two trained photographers, Janice DeMars and Murlyn Stalvig. The aim of the 1949 staff has been to assemble the most artistic and pictorial annual in the history of the Wa Wa Ta. It is hoped that in the years to come this volume will bring East students many happy recollection of high schOol. Making decisions Before the presses roll ADMINISTRATION Angus Rothwell, B. E., M. A. The Student Council is an organization which represents all the students of the school and serves as an outlet for general student activities. It is composed of officers elected from and by the student body and of representatives chosen from each homeroom. The Council seeks to find ways to improve school conditions. Some of its accomplishments this year have been the carrying out of various ttdrives, the sponsoring of the Red and White Day mixer and parade, a picture pro- ject, a school dance, the planning of Christmas decorations, and the raising of money for use in some worthy school project. These projects have been carried out under the direction of Miss Ernes- . tine Seyler. Offlcers I. Bennett, W. Thomas, B. Olson, C. Thompson. The Council convenes WAYZGOOSE STAFF Row 1: B. Le Cercle Francais of 1949 consists of eighteen members. Under the able supervision of conscilleuse, Mlle. Helene Pesark, we fulfilled our expec- tations. The first meeting, les membres du bureau were: president, Maxwell Witzig; Vice-president, James Carter; secretary, Kenneth Leland. By spon- soring the sale of greeting cards and Christmas wrappings, the French Club raised money to finance its expenditures. Outstanding among the club activities was the annual spring tea, Un Cafe au Printemps. Co-chairmen for the event were Ramona Christianson and Stanley Brown. Committees assisting included: refreshments, Janice DeMars; publicity, Seegar Swanson; reception, Thomas Frisbie; serving, Audrey Seivik; invitations, Mildred Swanson; and clean-up, Jeanne Christian- son. With a cabin party as a successful climax, the club ended the school year. Row 2. I. DeMars, K. Leland, L. Rolson. This year opened another calendar of enjoyable events and activities for the Latin Club. The members include all students taking second year Latin and also those who have completed the two year course from Miss Reine- mund, the adviser. The purpose of the Latin Club is not only to promote interest in Latin, but to learn more about the life of the Romans. We have, therefore, on the first Friday of each month, devoted our class period to reports conceniing this project. The club has also subscribed to an interesting bi-monthly Latin magazine, entitled the Auxilium Latium. Our activities for the year included the election of class officers, 3. Thanksgiving Supper, a Christmas Party, a pep assembly, and a Valentine party We have gained and enjoyed much as member of the Latin Club of 1948- 1949. uRespise, alspice, prospice. S. Wohlwend, D. Al- though it is primarily a social club, the Boosters try to maintain high scholar- shjp among its members. As a reward for high school achievements the club awards a fifty dollar scholarship each second year to one of the five top- ranking senior girls. This scholarship is in recognition of her scholastic attainment, citizenship, and service to the school. The activities for the year 1948-1949 were: Pledge of Members .......... At this time five new members were voted in and plans were made for the annual initiation. I In November a candle light dinner was the social event for all clu members. During December the club- sponsored a pep assembly; and later during the month under the supervision of Miss Wolford, club adviser, the girls on- tertained the faculty and friends at a Christmas tea. Buttons and Bows, a hardtime dance, was the club,s February success. On May 4 the club entertained at their Mother-Daughter Tea. The Visual Aid Club of 1948-1949 is much larger than it has been in the past. There are 44 members, representing the seventh through the twelfth grades. There is now an operator in almost every class, who is capable of projecting films. East4s enrollment has increased to such an extent that it was necessary to have two projection rooms, one available at all times. Therefore the auditorium and cafeteria were converted and are being quite satisfactorily used. Due mainly to the ingenuity and hard work of Mr. Bradshaw, adviser, the club was able to put on one of the most ingenious pep assemblies of the season4based on the very famous Wizard of Oz story. The main purpose of the Visual Aid Club is to be of service to the faculty and students in visual education. . I x419 I :3 M 77' W ,4 1w; I M. Stalv1g. S. Swanson, C. Iacobs, I. Holmes. East High School can be very proud of the Choir of 1949, for they started out the year with a most successful Christmas concert. On December 14 this concert, built around the theme Heavenly Light, was presented for our community. With the activities for the year successfully launched, the choir began work on the All Music Department Concert, which was presented by the band, choir, and orchestra of East in February. This mid-winter con- cert was given to raise money for the purchase of a recording machine. The final concert of the year, with Immortal Song as a theme, was given on April 26. It was a beautiful work with which to conclude the year. This concert gave the choir an opportunity to prove their worth, which they did, very successfully. The Keys, both Major and Minor, and the Troubadors were again or- ganized early in the year through the effort of the choir's able director, Miss Edna Fox. They performed throughout the city at various times during the year. The ninth grade choir, which sang with the Senior Choir several times this year, promises to be a real addition to next year's choir. The aims and standards of the choir this year have been to promote better citizenship and cooperation through the personal effort of its members and to enlarge the studentIs musical interests, both as listeners and per- formers. To the choir, good citizenship ranks ahead of performance. The choir of 1949 deserves its rightful place among past outstanding echoirs of East 'and their successful contributions t0'our school and 'com- munity. A CAPELLA CHOIR Row 1: L. Wicklund, I. The twirling squad of East High was organized in 1941 under the super- vision of Mr. Haack. The 1948- 49 school year has been a busy one for members of the twirl- ing squad. They have accomplished a series of varied maneuvers for street marching and have worked to perfect their performances at the football and basketball games. Besides providing entertainment for East High activities, the girls have also marched 1n several local parades. From the seventeen regular twirlers, three of the girls will graduate this spring: Eileen Hennessy, drum majorette, Beverly Sullivan and Avis Thomas, majorettes.
