' W Table of Contents Introduction Administration Classes School Life East High Elementary Sports Activities Ads Dedication We, the graduating class of 1955, wish to dedicate our an- nual to Mr. John Fugitt. He has helped and advised our four years in high school. Mr. Fugitt, came to East High School in 1936 starting as the Industrial Arts Teacher. Late r he was appointed athletic coach and as this department developed, he became head football coach. In the spring of 1952, Mr. Fugitt retired from coaching. He is now a teacher of general science and biology. The students and faculty res- pect and admire Mr. Fugitt as a teacher and as a friend. Editorial The Atom and E.H.E. Everybody who reads this yearbook remembers the great news that broke in this area in August of 1952: the building of the A-plant in Pike County. And everybody knows some of the very obvious consequences, the building of new roads, the enormous rise in rent, the increase in wages, the appearance of the trailor villages, and the opportunity for good employment. Soon, if not already, a change at the A-plant will be made from the con- struction stage to the operating stage, and then the numbers of workers will be greatly reduced. Those who find permanent work with Goodyear will be those who are hard steady workers, have learned something about science, and can present good credentials or a strong record. No doubt many of these 4 highly-paid and well-trained workers will have to come from outside places because not enough of our own people are qualified. Therefore it behooves those who still have another year or so at East to use their time and select their subjects in such a way that they can seek and hold the best of jobs. How often have we felt in school that the subjects we take will never mean anything to us! A boy may steer clear of foreign languages like poison only to find himself spending a year or so in Germany or Japang and then he misse-rs a lot if he has no curiosity about a foreign environment. Someone else may fail to get a job at the A-plant because he was afraid to take physics or chem.-1 istry or math in school, or wanted the so-called easy subjects and got by as easily as possible. Another person may be up against it because he could never see any value in learning to write a paragraph of correct English. We reap as we sow may be a worn-out expression, but it is as true as true can be, anyway. The atom age has come about in our lifetimes, and the nearbyA-plant has put us at the very forefront of progress and modernity. Rather than be old fogies by the time we are old enough to vote, let's accept this challenge and make whatever sacrifices are required. By so doing,we shall become as great as our ability will permit, and never have any regrets about fatal mistakes made in our teens. We are just as smart as anybody else, and if we are de- termined, we will not fumble the ball. Opportunity has knocked at our door as never before in the history of Portsmouth, therefore, the big question is: Am I going to do something about it? If the children like their part in this annual,we will continue to have these pages. We hope that next year we can improve this section of our year- book by getting pictures of the best projects the pupils have on during their class Work. Janet Johnson was the member of the annual staff who was responsible for collecting material to organize this section of the annual. Next year the annual staff and their adviser will appreciate suggestions from the teachers and parents of our grade school children.
