The conduct of school affairs in Portsmouth is the work of a group of citizens who are elected by the voters of the city. This Board, in turn, chooses the Superintendent of Schools and the Clerk. The present Board members have shown themselves to be very capable and very much in- terested in the schools. The students of East High School wish to take this opportunity to express their apprecia- tion for the work of the Board of Education. They wish also to pay tribute to the memory of Mr. Thomas Shackleford who lived in our section of the city. His interest and enthusiasm were very genuine and helpful. A. degree from the Univer- sity of Cincinnati. Prior to becoming principal, Mr. Smith taught Chemistry .ind Physics at East High. Mr. Smith has made many improve- ments at East High School, Under his guidance the school now has a large, well- Ltocked library with a full time librarian. Another immediate and important goal of East High is that of becoming a mem- ber of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. One of the require- ments for that membership is a full time course in physical education for the girls and the boys. We hope to make this ad- dition to the curriculum next year. TAYLUR Dean of Ciliflj' Miss Taylor is completing her seventh year as Dean at East High School. She received her A. B. degree at Miami University and her M. A. dtgrc-e from Ohio University. The most important task of the Dean is to counsel the high school girl in her personal and academic problems. Miss Taylor is also Girls League Sponsor and Co-Sponsor of the Y-Hi and Student Kioverlinwtit.
