East High School 1151 Atkins Street Erie, Pennsylvania 16503 1 LLlUiL.LL1LVLL.Ll High School can be the best of times; it is what you make it. These years at East High have been “The Times of Our Lives.” Through our years at East, we learned to appreciate the time we spent here. For the Seniors, it is our “One Last Look” at East High. We have waited long and worked hard to fulfill our obligations to make that “One Last Look” possible for us. As we take that last look, we realize that there is no turning back! In our quest for knowledge and learning, we needed help along the way; the faculty and administration were always with us and “In Tune with the Times.” They have given us their time and patience to make us the best we can be. The many fine athletes here at East High need recognition for their hardwork, dedication, and most of all their time. From an athlete’s point of view, it is “Our Time to Shine.” After the many practices, games, matches, and tournaments, these athletes endured. East High offers many extracurricular activities to help students spend their free time. In other words “Our Time Together.” Being members of our clubs, and organizations, we have learned many valuable things to help us later on in life, and we should appreciate the many advisors and teachers who so graciously gave of their time. As underclassmen at East High, you have begun to realize it is going to take a lot of time and hardwork to reach your Senior year. Sometimes you wonder if you’ll ever make it! We all have to start out somewhere, so “As We Begin” is perfect for the underclassmen. Finally, thank you East High for making these “The Times of Our Lives.” 3 4 5 UatV liLLrLl tlrlUiLL HiLLlLrLIxiL JOHN DANOWSKI Principal 6 atfcltvaiiv HtUllrlOaLt: RUPERT J. STADTMILLER Assistant Principal 8 Mr. Sedlock, a Cleveland, Ohio native, graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Arts. After graduating, he obtained his first teaching position at Wilson Junior High School in Cleveland, his hometown, and taught there for six years. With these six years of experience behind him, Mr. Sedlock decided to move to Erie. That move was our gain and Cleveland’s loss. And it was to East High that he started teaching. While at East, he has taught general metals and advanced drafting, where countless East High students have benefited from his expertise. At present, he has over thirty years of teaching experience and is Department Head of our Industrial Arts classes. Mr. Sedlock has earned post-graduate credits at Edinboro University and Pennsylvania State University at Behrend, and in addition to Industrial Arts, he is also certified to teach history and geography. Outside of education, Mr. Sedlock served in the U.S. Army in Germany for two years where he held the rank of sergeant in the engineer corps. A family man, he served as a Boy Scout advisor to his son’s church troop. His favorite activities include fishing, taking vigorous daily walks, riding the bus to and from work, and just “horsing” around. What part of his work here at East has given him his greatest satisfaction? Mr. Sedlock said, “Working with young people and helping them reach their full potential.” It is because of his commitment to education for over thirty years, his caring about the success of his students, his desire to always lend a helping hand, that the SUNRISE staff dedicates with deep respect and gratitude, the 1986 edition of the SUNRISE to Mr. John Sedlock. 9 LLLLiililrli IrlLliLLtULLlit LEONARD ANDRZEJEWSKI Guidance Counselor 12 FRANK J. The Boys’ Varsity Baseball Team had a fair season under head coach Dale Lewis. But injuries in the middle of the season to Mike Nagy and Bob Simpkins really hurt the team. Some players that had bright spots were Rich Shopene at first base who earned all metro first team; Ken Jerioski, second team outfield; Randy Baughman, honorable mention at shortstop; and Paul Kitchen, catching. The pitching staff consisted of underclassmen Jim Kuna, Randy Baughman, and Bob Simpkins. They should have a lot of experience for next year. The boys 1985 J.V. baseball team was dedicated and enthusiastic, but a shortage of players hindered the team. The squad improved gradually over the season. The fielding became more solid and the bats more lively in the last few games. All the players worked very hard, but special mention goes to Tom Perry, Travis Duck, Bill Piotrowski, and Gary Freiwald. Jeff Ponder and Willie Jordan, who played both J.V. and Varsity, were extremely helpful both offensively and on the mound. The only way for next year’s team to enjoy a winning season is for more players to try out. There are probably many East students who could help the team, but in order to do so they must stay eligible and work hard. n r I T. Perry up to bat. 70 G. Freiwald playing catcher. Pitcher W. Two Seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen, comprised first-year coach Tom Mangold’s young team. Junior Cindy Kalinowski led the team in hits with 20, for a neat .351 batting average, while another junior, Tina Shaftstall, paced the team with 18 runs scored. Coach Mangold and assistant coach Debbie Flick think that experience and a positive attitude are the only missing ingredients needed to make the future look brighter for this young Warrior team. East High Boys’ Tennis Team finished with an over-all record of 6-9 this past season. This should have been a record breaking season, but due to our “C” rule and two first stringers, they lost three games that should have been won. A main highlight, team wise, was a double win in a triangle match against Corry 4-3 and a 4-3 win over Panama, N.Y. Convincing wins over Tech, Mercyhurst, Westfield, and Franklin made the season worthwhile. Individual wise, John Giles the Warrior sophomore sensation, broke Robert Uth’s sophomore record of 16 wins and cooly proceeded to break Scott Cohicks record of 18 wins. John attempted to break Uthe’s record of 22 in one season, but only reached 20. John still has two seasons to break the individual record of 22 wins and the overall record of 38 wins. The bright spot for the spring season of 1986 is that five lettermen of eight will return, and of the five returning, three are first string like George Gourlias, John Frazzini, John Giles, Dan Popoff, Jamie Krysiak, and Isaias Munoz. 72 LrLLtLL liaomX VLtairli White handles the hurdles. Sophomores Morlanda Stovall, Pam Davis, Mario Hughes, Chareen Carroll and Daphne Garlington formed the nucleus of a very quick and explosive 400m relay team. They placed second in the Metro Meet and third in the District Ten Track meet. Aiding the sprinters were Natalie Sauers and Debbie Waisley in the hurdles. Nanette Davis and Tia Walker Waisley, what determination! were the middle distance runners, and the sister combination of Jenny and Michele Baumann were in distance races. The field events were dominated by Michelle Griffin, Angel Thompkins, Tonya Lofton and Cheryl Kanaar. What this young team lacked in experience they made up with their enthusiasm. The 1985 East High Boys’ Track team was small in numbers, but it was not to be denied a place in the Metro Meet. The squad combined for a fourth place finish, edged out by 212 points by Tech. The 400m relay team consisting of Chris Popa, Chris Schau, Dave McLaurin and Tracv Bumpers had a 2-3 record in dual meets. In the metro finals this relay team placed second to McDowell by 1 100 of a second. This only proved to be a stepping stone as the team advanced to the District 10 Championship by placing first in the sectional Meet with a time of 45:09. The Warriors managed a third place in district competition and even had the potential to go down state. Under the guidance of first year field coach John Dahlstrand, the senior duo of Jim Mitchell and Mike Lubak, captured the metro title in the field events. The distance runners did as well as they could, but lack of experience hampered them. Next year we will count on sophomores Ken Bauman, Lauren Kubeja, and Loren Ames in the hopes of a better season. Seniors who will be missed will be Russel Moore in the 400m; Tracy Bumpers in the long jump; Chris Schau in the 400m relay, and John Davis in the field events, as well as Mitchell and Lubak. There are some juniors who show promise next year. Mark Hubbart in the 100m, and 400m relay; Steve Marsh in the 1600m relay and Chris Popa in the 100m, 200m, and 400m relay. The sophomore runners show great potential in upcoming years. Dave McLaurin in the 200m and 400m; James Corder in the triple jump and Alfonso Pickens in the 400m. Coaches Filipowski and Speros are looking for some outstanding underclassmen to supplement a good nucleus for the coming season. 76 M. Hubbard, Sprinter. 1600 Relay, S. Marsh, C. Popa, A. Pickens, D. Coach Tome yelling instructions. Under first year coach, Dave Tome, the 1985 East High Warrior Football Team made big strides. After a dismal 0-10 season in 1984 the players and new coaching staff had their work cut out for them. The team set goals, which included becoming more competitive and winning some football games. Although the team only managed to win one game (against a top ranked team from an always powerful W.P.I.A.L.), they remained competitive in just about every game of the season. Thus, attaining one of their goals. It may also be significant to point out that four of East’s opponents made the playoffs in Division I, II, and III. Senior Warriors played a big part on the 1985 squad. Outstanding seniors included: Jim Bindeman, Allan Frampton, Larry Grubbs, Mark Hubbart, Mike Nedreski, Gerry Kamholtz, Jeff Porter, Tim Slupski, and Joe Barbara. Outstanding juniors were: Randy Baughman, James Conder, John Giles, Brian Johnson, Chris Johnson, Kevin Moffet, Steve Bankhead, Dwight Esters, Don R. Baughman looking for an open receiver! Bement, and Dave Allen. Underclassmen saw a lot of action. Reliable sophomores were Marty Davis, Eric Clayton, Spencer Carr, and Duran Patterson. Freshmen Scott Davis, Ai Jones and Brian Konieczki also saw their share of action in a few games. Special congratulations go to All-Metro selections: Mark Hubbart 1st team (unanimous) defensive end, Randy Baughman honorable mention quarterback, and Dwight Esters, honorable mention defensive back. Captains elected for the 1985 season were Jim Bindeman, Allan Frampton, Marty Davis, and Mike Nedreski. After a much needed spring and summer weight program, and with quite a few returning lettermen, the East High Football team should make larger strides toward a winning football season. 78 Moffet running for some yardage. fclfliiliGfc LLL ‘ Lt D. They received a great deal of help from an outstanding backfield including Chuck Qualls, Leonard Ford, Randy Hubbart and Cari Goodwine. Our line, which was one of the smallest in the city, had guts! Joel Gauss, Mike Szynanski, Joe Grubbs, John Ciecerski, Scott Davis, Matt Jude, George Silay, and Bob Hess have the potential to become outstanding lineman. Paul Flemings and Wayne Patterson pulled double duty at blockers and receivers at their tight-end positions. Both will prove to be valuable to the varsity team next year. The 1986 season will bring back pride to the Girls’ Golf Team. What style by D. Paris Do you have better form? T. Stasiewski ready to hit the ball T. Warzel addressing the ball. 90 Row 1: T. This year was an exciting one, as the team had playoff hopes until the last week of the season. We finished 8-6, tied for fourth place with Mercyhurst Prep. Adding to the excitement was the last game of the season when we beat Vincent. They were already headed for District play-offs as the third AAA team out of the Metro League. This enabled us to end the season tied with Vincent for the City Championship. Another highlight was beating Villa, and in the process also shutting them out in one game, 15-0. East remained the only team to beat them through district play-off competition as they became District 10 Champions. Individual players bringing home honors for East were: Cindy Kalinowski... 1st team All-City by unanimous decision, and in one game served 15 straight points against St. Ben’s ... Louise Brown . .. 2nd team All-City... Beth Lillie, Andrea LaRock, Linda Devore ... Honorable mention All-City. Coach Dillon was extremely pleased with the hard work the team displayed. Possibly, if a little hairy spider hadn’t bitten her on the first day of school, causing the team to miss over a week of practice, the team might have finished higher in the standings. All in all, it was a season we will not forget. We look forward to next season when the team will be led by captain Beth Lillie. 91 Tri-Captains U LlIIzLl 1 liLli 1st row. J. Young, J. Priester, D. This year’s edition ended the season with a fine 6 wins - 4 loss record - 6 wins being more than the combined total wins over the last eleven years and the first winning season in the past twelve years. Coach Wilson gave the team a fresh outlook on the winning way with a disciplined attack, pride in accomplishment, and a new team spirit. Water Polo chants of “Now!”, “Nowand Again!” and “Again and Again and Again and Again!” coupled with the pride of winning and displaying mourning arms bands for the opposing teams, and the awarding of Team Honors medals brought about a Warrior Pride unparalled in Waterpolo at East for a decade. Leading the team to victory were forwards Dave Langer - 1st Team All-City, Seniors and 2nd Team All-City Jim Priester and John Young, Shallow-end goalie Bob Simpkins - Honorable Mention All-City, Guards — Jamie KRYSIAK, Don Pamula, Martin Powell, and Dan Popoff. For his efforts, Coach Wilson was voted Coach of the year by the other Water Polo Coaches and Officials. Also contributing to the winning way were Steve Heitzenrater-Deep-end Goalie and Lane Steigmeyer - Guard. And for the first time in East High’s history three young ladies were on the Water Polo - Guards Michelle Kanarr, Diane Bush, and Cheryl Kanarr! Michelle accomplished a first for Erie Water Polo history - she was ejected from a game against Prep for a brutality infraction NI! Manager Robin Niedzielski was a valuable asset to Coach Wilson’s statistical and equipment work. We hope this year’s accomplishments will be the building block of the future for Warrior Water Polo. Again, Congratulations to our Poloists who swam three miles a day to bring a city Championship to East. Good Luck Reek-O! 92 Surrounded by Warrior defenders. Ames The 1985-86 Warrior Wrestling Team had one of its most successful seasons in years under third year Coach Joe Kaliszewski. Highlights include stunning victories over Mercyhurst Prep, Seneca, and North East. The team finally came into its own and gained respect by wrestling the best teams to the best of their ability. The team has the experience to win constantly against the best. The team participated in the North East tournament and had two outstanding wrestlers: Chris Chismar, taking 2nd place in the 981b. weight class and Jim Binde-man placing 4th out of 15 wrestlers in the 1851bs. weight class. Senior wrestlers included Captain Jim Bindeman, Mark Hubbart, and Larry Grubbs. Next year’s team will include Juniors Dave Allen, Loren Ames, and Paul Gambil; Sophomores Chris Chismar, Dave Chase and Joe Grubbs. Freshman are Jeff Dietz, A1 Jenes, and Arlo Grady. Three East High Warriors qualified in the Section 1 AA tournament. They were Jim Bindeman, Loren Ames, and Joe Grubbs. All three wrestlers took second place. Junior Dave Langer led the team with thirteen first place finishes in eighteen races. Seniors Don Pamula and Jim Priester had nine first place finishes; each followed closely by John Young with eight Scarlet and Gray ribbons. Also garnering points for East were Seniors Jamie Krysiak and Dan Popoff with utility-fish Bob Simpkins splashing on. Highlights of the year included our beating Strong Vincent after being tied going into the last race - our team responding with a first and second place - our first win over Vincent in twenty-three years; Dave Langer and John Young qualifying for the District 10 Championships; Freshman Jerry Weatherholtz dropping his time fifteen seconds over four swim meets; and Coach Wilson being thrown into the pool at Academy when we won the championship. Coach Wilson’s workout program of over one hundred hours of swimming between one to three miles per day along with weight training and double practices of 7:00 AM and 3:00 P.M. enabled every swimmer to bring down his time and achieve their own personal goals. Hard work and determination and a strong display of “Warrior Pride” helped us win our City Championship. We are looking foward to more swimmers joining next year to take us to another City Championship. 104 tUtLfc tdl LLi 1'UllLi Row 1: L. Green, S. Irwin, J. Hurlburt, K. Niedzielski, K. Peuschel, A. The 1985-86 swim season for our Warrior Girls was full of excitement and fun. We had seventeen great girls that made our season a very successful one. Our future looks very promising as fourteen girls are returning and several hoping to make the team when they make their grades! Leading us this year was junior Jenny Watral with four firsts, eight seconds, and three thirds. Following closely were sophomores Dianne Bush with three firsts, seven seconds, and ten thirds and Dawn Pike with three Firsts, three seconds, and seven thirds. Each meet we were hampered with between one and three of our top girls unable to participate which put us on the short side of the win column. Coach Wilson is extremely proud of all the girls as they were well disciplined and worked very hard to exceed their own personal goals of bringing down their times with each successful meet. The “guts” of the year award goes to Katrina Peuschel who swam the Butterfly for Coach Wilson and then volunteered to swim the Five-hundred (23 lengths of East’s pool!) when we were in need of swimmers for events. All in all, Coach Wilson cannot say enough good things about his “Swimmerettes”. He hopes our success will encourage others to participate and with their participation lead us to a championship year in the near future.
