We try our best to be successful in life and with help, in time, we shall be what we dream. With our faculty here at East High we have an advantage over other schools. Our faculty gives us all of the knowledge and skills and it hopes one day, we can use them. But it takes no credit and are our “Backstage Directors”. We, the Seniors, are at our final rehearsal and are ready to go out with our developed talents to earn the world’s applause. It has seemed like a long road, but now we are finally “In the Spotlight.” Activities and Sports are a very important part of school; for they give us a chance to try new things and get experience. The more practice one gets, the finer and more rounded the performance is. East High offers many different extracurricular activities and is always adding new ones. All the students who participate in these are striving for the highest praise of all — “The Roar of the Crowd”. Though sometimes they are not recognized as the very important, the underclassmen are the future of our school. As in the theater one has to start at the bottom and work one’s way up to the top. It is very similar in school; when you first start you have no “seniority”. The underclassmen sue the “Supporting Roles”. In a way, life is a big production. East High has given us a good start and soon it will be the time to perform in life ... 3 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY BACKSTAGE DIRECTORS EAST HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL JOHN DANOWSKI Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS 7 8 DEDICATION Miss Warus began her teaching career at East High School in 1967, and ever since, she has been one of the most enthusiastic promoters and supporters of East activities. At East, she has taught Latin, French, English and Journalism. An Erie native, Miss Warus attended St. Casimir Elementary School. Then, she went to Villa Maria High School where she graduated in 1963. Not finished with her formal education, she enrolled at Villa Maria College and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1967. It is this year that she became a “warrior” when her teaching career began at East. To enhance her personal and professional skills in teaching, Miss Warus enrolled at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh where she was awarded a Master’s Degree for her work. Of course, her first love of teaching is the romance languages, French and Latin, where countless students have benefited from her expertise in her classes. It is because of this love of language that she is a member of the Executive Committee of the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association. During her years at East, her “pet project” was, of course, our Sunrise. For sixteen years, she and her staffs produced excellent yearbooks, many earning state honors in yearbook competition. For these sixteen years of personal and professional committment in making the yearbook an exciting and rewarding endeavor, the Sunrise staff dedicates with great admiration and respect, the 1985 edition of the Sunrise to our former advisor, Miss Lucille Warus. 9 GUIDANCE COUNSELORS LEONARD ANDRZEJEWSKI Guidance Counselor 12 FRANK J. The Boys’ Baseball Team under head coach Dale Lewis and assistant Ron Passarelli, were again faced with lack of numbers, but team spirit led them to never giving up. Although team goals were not attained a few personal goals did come about. Jose Sama was selected to the All City First Team as designated hitter. Pete Szoszorek earned Second Team honors as an infielder. Sparking the Warrior offense were Jose Sama, Pete Szoszorek Jim Robasky. Solid defense came from Paul Kitchen, Rich Shopene, Mike Nagy and Randy Baughman. Supportive pitching came from Dave Kindle, Jim Robasky and Jim Kuna. He broke Scott Cohick’s school record of 18 wins and now holds the record with 22 wins. The Warriors finished in 4th place in Metro out of 7 teams but in city public school play finished first with a 5-1 record. The 8 wins represents the second most wins in school history. In the win column Ray Lamp had 15, Chris Lucas 11, Dan Popoff 11, John Frazzini, Brian Vogel 8, Bob Skinner 8, Cirk Lavins 3, John Giles 1. East High’s Boys’ Track Team had an outstanding season as the dual meets (2-3) served only as the groundwork in preparation for the big meets. Gordon Burns, Greg Bauman, Tony Hollingsworth and Roosevelt Price broke a record in the Metro meet 3200 m relay with a time of 8:08.6 as well as the record in the 1600m relay with a time of 3:23.38. Gordon Burns was the anchor on the 1600m relay with support from Tony Hollingsworth, Danny Thomas and Roosie Price. These young men were not to be denied in the State Championships as they again broke the existing 3 year record in 1600m relay with a new time of 3:20.11. Gordon Burns solidified a hold on the school 400m record with a time of 48.68. This is the second fastest time ever to come out of Erie. Gordon holds the district 400m record with a time of 49.31. The nucleus of the 1985 track team will have to be made up of field event people like Mike Lubak and John Davis who were throwing the shot in the area of 46 feet and up, James Mitchell in the javelin with throws approaching 170 feet. Robert Daniels who recorded 6'2 in the high jump and over 40' in the triple jump. Steve Peavy and Tracy Bumpers are up and coming long jumpers as well as runners. Other members showing some development in the running events are Gerry Komholz, Ken Bauman, Dave McLaurin. It will be an exciting year trying to find people to replace Gary Law, Tyrone McLendon and the seniors who made up the relay teams. 50 EAST’S Greg Bauman dusting Trojan opponent. The season was highlighted by the performance of senior Janice Bindeman, who was the District 10 champion in the hurdles, triple jump and the long jump. The girls finished with a 2-3 season, but with returning underclassmen Natalie Saures and Debbie Waisley in the hurdles, Tracey Chester, Charlene Carrol and Natasha Stanton in the sprint. Jenny Baumann and Jenny Watril in the distance events and Val Hughes in the jumps, the team is building for the future. The team was hurt this year with the injury and loss of defending District 10 titlist Valencia Gavin in the 100m. Nancy Miller showing determination in running her event. Natasha Stanton shows a smile as she finishes her warm up lap. 53 EAST’S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM RUNS WILD B. Skinner, K. Bauman, L. Ames, B. Vogel, L. Kubeja. East’s cross country team did not do too well this season. With only one girl willing to uphold the tradition of fine lady runners, it was tough for Jenny Bauman to win any meets on her own. However, she did place well in her efforts against competing teams and should do better next year. Hopefully next year she’ll get some help to make a representative team of lady runners at East High. The boys’ team had only five competitors throughout most of the season and Kenny Bauman was the only experienced runner. Loren Ames, Lauren Kubeja underclassmen, and Seniors Brian Vogel and Bob Skinner made up the squad. The record of 1-10 did not speak for all the dedicated hard work these people committed themselves to. All the times we improved with each meet was an indication of next year being an interesting season for East High’s runners. 54 Jenny Bauman - The Lone Warriorette. JV’S CAP METRO TITLE Row 1: R. Senior Mike Lubak was chosen for the First Team line backer and Junior Alan Frampton made First Team center. Four Seniors also received honorable mention - Tracy Bumpers, tight end; Ken Goss, running back; Chris Schau, defensive back; and Mike Nagy, defensive end. Returning lettermen for next year are junior Michelle Hamm, sophomores Lisa Musser and Melinda Hamm, and freshmen Amy Potts, Deanna McClintic and Stacie Omniewski. Next year Coach Lambros looks forward to another prosperous season with sixteen new prospects on the list so far. 63 EAST’S GOLF TEAM DOMINATED BY DETERMINED SENIORS Row 1: Coach J. Satysur, F. Swasing, C. Dombkowski, Row 2: R. Foster, C. Lavins, R. Shopene 64 Seniors M. Krystek and L. Sharpies Inexperience was the key factor in the Boys’ Golf Team this season. All the members were Seniors, and they were all competing for the first time on an interscholastic level. Rich Shopene, the number one man, always let the opponent know they were in for a good match with his crushing drives and fairway play. Ron Foster and Cirk Lavins kept pace with their opponents only to fall short on the greens. Rounding out the letterwinners were Fred Swasing and Chris Dombkowski. With the entire team graduating we are looking for golfers for the 1985 team. We have hopes for a young team but winning season next year. The Girls’ Golf Team, although few in numbers were very competitive. Again, the Senior Class came through. Lisa Sharpies and Michelle Krystek played all their matches consistently tough but due to lack of team members, had to forfeit points that cost them the match. The 1985 season looks for those female students willing to try something new and give it their all, to bring pride back to the Warrior Golf Team. LADY SPIKERS RAPIDLY IMPROVING Row 1: C. Thomas, S. Returning to the coaching duties after three years absence, Mrs. Dillon recruited some new talent in freshmen and upperclassmen to mix with experienced players. After learning the basics, the team started to get together as the season progressed. The team led by captain Ami Lipinski, and co-captain Missy Bauman, finished the season with a 4-11 record, placing in a tie with Academy for 6th place. Highlights of the season were the faculty game with East and Wayne, a parents’ night, an assembly game with East finally beating Vincent, and Cindy Kalinowski being named to the Honorable-Mention list for All-City. The 1984 Water Polo season was not what you would call a successful season. They went 0-10 but showed improvement every game. The high scorer for the team was Jim Priester with 25 goals. Other members of the team that gained experience for next year were Larry Higgins, Danny Popoff, John Young, Tom Truchanowicz and Dave Langer. The goalies were Alan Frampton and Chris Schau. The coach, Jim Blanchard, expects great things from them in the coming years. 76 Coach Blanchard talking strategy. East High’s Wrestling Team hasn’t been blessed with much wrestling experience, but they have three things going for them, confidence, determination and guts. This year’s team includes two Seniors -Chris Schau and Randy Ranson; four Juniors - Montoya Morrow, Jim Bindeman, Mark Hubbart, and Larry Grubbs; three Sophomores - Lauren Ames, Dave Allen, and Paul Gamble. There are also six Freshmen on the team - Chris Chismar, Dave Chase, Joe Grubbs, Tim Himes, Marty Davis and Mark Piccirello. There will be fourteen returning wrestlers next year and hopefully they’ll turn some heads in the Metro League. Larry Grubbs handling his man Lauren Ames trying for a take down. This season was especially good because every match was close and the swimmers all showed improvement. The team also showed many standouts this year. They included Dan Popoff and John Young in the breast stroke, Jim Priester in the butterfly, Dave Langer in the medley relay, and Marc Di Raimo in the 200 meter freestyle. Next year the team should show an impressive season due to the fact of experience and an increased number of swimmers. Returning swimmers include Steve Heitzenrater, Robert Simpkins in backstroke, and Jamie Krysiak and Eric Eaton in the freestyle events. Row 1: L. Higgins, D. Popoff, B. Simpkins, Row 2: D. Langer, J. GIRLS’ SWIM TEAM PROGRESSING Due to lack of experience among the ranks, the pre-season judgments were not the greatest.
