As freshmen they have sketched the outline without which there could be no form in the portrait. They have started with an idea to develop in succeeding years. As sophomores they have added detail and perspective. Drawing on the wisdom and knowledge of their teachers, they have learned to think and to be creative. They have added depth and insight that make the portrait seem possible and indeed workable. As juniors they have built on the foundations of the preceding years and now add the shades and hues of their experiences and friendships at East High School to clarify and heighten the portrait of their everyday school life. As seniors they have stood back to reflect on the rainbow of memories that have gone into producing their masterpiece and to add the final touches. They have all contributed their talents, their ingenuity, and their character in a unique blend of capabilities to render a special living masterpiece, the portrait of the members of the class of 1983. 3 Administration And Faculty Tinting Our Days With Wisdom 5 East High School Principal John Danowski Principal of East High School 6 Assistant Principals John R. Martine Rupert J. Stadtmiller Assistant Principal Assistant Principal 7 8 JOHN M. DREW Dedication Deeds, not words may well be the motto associated with this East High School faculty member who for the past twenty-three years has been an outstanding example of the citizenship and leadership qualities emphasized in his social studies classes. A graduate of East High School and of Edinboro State College with a major in social studies and a minor in geography, he has taken additional studies leading to a master’s degree at Edinboro State College. Gannon University, Western Michigan University and Wilkes College. His teaching career has included a wide variety of social studies courses including civics, urban geography, citizenship education, world cultures, sociology and American history. He has demonstrated his leadership qualities and expertise in other communities on three separate occasions when he participated on the Middle States evaluating teams. At one time a member of the East High football team, this faculty member has coached varsity football, was faculty manager of the wrestling team, and coached the boys’ tennis team for fifteen years. In addition he was mentor of the Geography Club and adviser to the Ski Club for several seasons. For several years he has coordinated the assemblies and activities connected with Black History and Brotherhood Week. Furthermore, for a period of seven summers, he has worked with the GECAC program in positions such as counselor, supervisor and summer coordinator. A member of the EEA, PSEA. and NEA, he also lists membership in the American Legion Post 200 and in Catholic Charities. In recognition of his personal example of the qualities of outstanding leadership and community-oriented service, his embodiment of success that is the spirit of East High School and his dedication and professionalism in teaching thousands of East High students on the junior and senior high school levels, the yearbook staff proudly dedicates the 1983 Sunrise to our highly esteemed faculty member. On September 15,1982, Penny died in a car accident. Penny Lee Campbell, a senior, was a member of the Y-Teens, the Girls' Chorus, and the Color Guard, as well as a member of this year’s yearbook staff. In addition she was a member of the National Honor Society. Penny was strong in her Christian faith as a member of the Harborcreek Baptist Church. Penny was a friend to all who knew her and very dear to those of us who were close to her. Penny's absence from the Class of 1983 is deeply felt by all of her classmates. Although Penny Campbell is sorely missed, her kind memory will be forever cherished. Sometimes we do not understand The things God lets” be done. For we know He's all powerful, Believing in His Son. Penny now has moved away From this to her new home. For, with her Jesus, now she is In her mansion, to roam. I know she told Him, to His face The needs of all your hearts. And asked Him that He'd always be Of each of you. a part. Her testimony, don’t let die. It's what she lived life for. So lift your heart in praise to Him With Penny, at life's door. You each want Penny now alive And free from every strife. But, friend, she is, for she's not dead. She's in Eternal Lifel 43 — Gene Kennett Sports 44 Boys’ Track Row I: S. Tharp. J. Dembinski. J. The East High Boys’ Track Team had its first good season since 1969, as it was the first time that East won the district championship, even though Ariennville tied East for that honor. East was also second in the Metro Meet and had the potential to even win that. Eight boys participated in the District Meet and all eight qualified for the state level competition. Almost all the track records were broken this year except for the two hurdle races, the 400m and the 3300m races. East was blessed with some great sprinters in Pinky Miller and Barry Hollaman, both seniors who were instrumental in establishing new records in the lOOn. 30On and the 400m relays. Other seniors who were instrumental in manufacturing a winning track season were Jeff Burns. Shawn Carson. Mike Boykin. Ron Porter, Ed Moffett. Ron Billups. Tony Mickens. Charles Miller. James Harris. Dave Shirley. Randy Allen, and Jeff Young. Juniors who helped make this a banner track season were John Dembinski, Kevin Lubak, Jamie Howard, and Pete Buziewicz. Gordon Burns. Greg Bauman. Roosevelt Price. Danny Thomas, Tony Hollingsworth. Ed Spagel and Dave Mihalco. all sophomores, show tremendous potential for shattering more records, even though they helped establish them this year. There are some freshmen who show much potential and also the desire to succeed. East’s field events will get a big boost from freshmen Mike Lubak, John Davis. Keith Lomax, and Jim Mitchell. There were many others who contributed their best for the general success of the team under the leadership of Coach Carl Filipowski. Perhaps next year more winning days will arrive. With only one player returning from the 1981-82 basketball team, this year’s Warriors faced an entire rebuilding program. The team consisting of three seniors, four juniors, and two sophomores, possessed little height with the tallest starter at 6'll , lacked experience, and had to learn an entirely new system under Coach Don Kolakowski. Facing more experienced and much taller opponents, the Warriors emphasized ball control and switching defenses to complete the campaign with a deceiving 6-13 record, since five losses came about by an average of four points. Leading the offensive attack was 5'6 senior David Pullium who averaged 17.2 points per game. David was a unanimous choice to the All City Senior All-Star Team and a member of the All Section Metro team. Seniors Art Combest and Charles Thompson, both playing reserve roles, completed their basketball careers. With the return of six players, a good nucleus for the 1983-84 team exists. With the experience gained this year and with hard work until next season, the Sunrisers should improve. 60 Girls’ Varsity Basketball Row l L. Shirley. Manager. J. Horvath. S. Logan. D. Fisher, T. T. Their Metro League score was 8-6 which tied them with St. Benedict’s for playoff consideration. They eventually lost the playoff game with St. Benedict’s after defeating them twice in regular season play. The highlight of the season had to be defeating the city champion Villa Maria team twice in league play. While every other team will be losing an outstanding crop of seniors, our team will be losing one senior. Captain Denise Bauman. Therefore, things should continue on the upswing next year, since the Girls’ Basketball team will be returning all five starters in addition to a young bench. Coach Tom Matusiak believes the key to next year’s season will be how dedicated the girls can become towards basketball and how good they want to make themselves. 63 Captain Denise Bauman. Boys’ J.V. This year’s team consisted of the most talented group of ninth and tenth graders ever to wear the Scarlet and Gray of the Junior Varsity. With only two returning letter winners, the girls really had to work hard to make the offense and defense effective against one of the toughest J.V. Metro leagues in years. The team finished with a 9-5 Metro record, good enough for third place. Leading the Warriors were captains Cheryl Williams and Louise Brown. Louise set a single season scoring record as a freshman with 184 points. Cheryl, who started every game as a freshman and as a sophomore, was second in scoring with 118 points. Sonya Williams also broke the 100 point mark with 104 points for the season. The 1982-83 Wrestling Team, under Coach Mike Maines. had a very disappointing year with a record of 3-K). They also had to cancel the last five matches due to an inability to put a team on the mats. The C average” rule had a devastating effect on the team, since many returning lettermen were ineligible for over half the season. Even with these problems, when facing opponents with similar wrestling backgrounds and eligibility rules. East reigned supreme. For example. East defeated Academy 34-22 and Strong Vincent by a score of 28-25. The highlight of this year, for the team as a whole, was a fourth place finish in the Portville Central Christmas Tournament. Outstanding individual performers were Michael Keys with a first place in the Portville Tournament and a second place in the Metro Tournament and Sonny Hamilton with a second place finish in both the Portville Tournament and the Metro Tournament. Unfortunately, Michael Keys transferred to Academy and Sonny Hamilton retired before the completion of the season s competitions. This is Coach Maines’ last year as a coach and he wishes next year’s team and new coach a most successful wrestling season. 68 69 Swimming Team Row l M. Mato . J. Young. S. Beaie. M. Corcoran. J. The 1983 Swim Team was composed primarily of beginners. However, they still had a record of 2-3 which was quite good for a team put together in a little under two weeks. The Water Warriors entered a medley relay in the District Meet and beat both Tech and Academy this year. Swimming this year were seniors Terry Bishop. Scott Cohick, and Paul Askins with Mike Matos also coming out to aid this new team. Junior Alan Schultz is regarded as a fine prospect for the backbone of next year’s team. Also swimming on the team were Jim Priester, John Young. Kevin Cook, Larry Higgins, Scott Beale. Shaun Slupski. Marc DiRaimo, Greg Bauman, Marc Corcoran and Sue Bucket. If, according to Coach Pat Hart, these swimmers continue to swim and to lift over the summer, they could not only develop into future East High stars, but the Water Warriors” could also be on their way to better things next year. 70 Raquetball Club Row It K. Mary L. Duncan. Mrs. Duncan, a graduate of Albertus Magnus College, taught for nineteen years various levels of English and typing at East High School. Oriented to serving the students she taught and most generous with her time and talents, she was adviser to the school newspaper and literary magazine for several years. She acted as adviser to the Red Cross, the Student Council and to the tenth and eleventh grade classes. She was very much involved with each senior class in her capacity as coordinator of the senior Banquet committee, the name cards and announcements committee, yearbook patrons and subscriptions and commencement arrangements. She served on the Middle States Evaluating Committees on three occasions and was co-chairman of the steering committee for East High’s evaluation. For many years she was chairman of the faculty fund. In 1979 the Sunrise was dedicated to her. She has been a member of the local, state, and national teachers’ organizations and an active member of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English. Among her varied interests are gardening, theater, music, bridge, and gourmet cooking. She loves to travel, particularly on a cruise ship. She has already taken four cruises and dreams of one day taking a cruise around the world. Her many friends among the faculty and student body of East High School wish her a most happy, productive, and enjoyable retirement. Mary L. Duncan Patrick L. Hart After thirty-three years in the field of physical education, Patrick L. Hart, former swimming instructor at East High School, retired in November. A graduate of East High School, he received his bachelor’s degree from Penn State University, and his master’s degree from Allegheny College. He taught one year at Gridley before coming to East where he has taught swimming and gym on the junior and senior high levels, as well as the water safety course, in addition to teaching mathematics on the seventh, eighth and tenth grade levels. For many years he coached the water polo team and the boys’ and the girls’ swimming teams. He is a PIAA swim official who coached for a period of five years the city divers’ team. In addition Mr. Hart was an adviser of the Ski Club and served as a member of the National Honor Society Committee. He is well known for his sense of humor and has served and continues to serve as master of ceremonies for many occasions. He has been a member of the local, state, and national teachers’ organizations. In 1962 the Sunrise was dedicated to him. Among his many pursuits are skiing, jogging, following the Penn State football games and attending their home games. He enjoys all types of music, even opera which he attends on occasion. His love of travel has taken him to Europe three times, on the last of which he traveled on the ship the Queen Elizabeth. He numbers France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium. England, Spain, Austria, Luxembourg, and Holland among the countries he has visited. He hopes someday to travel in Ireland. Although he has officially retired as a teacher in the school district, nevertheless we are happy to have him involved with East High School once again this year as the coach of the swimming team and the water polo team. We hope he has a most enjoyable and productive retirement that includes a continuing association with the faculty and student body of East High School. 122 The portrait of our life at East High is now complete. 123 mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COM PAN Y
