East Welcomes New Principal The faculty and student body of East High School extend a warm welcome to our new principal, John Danowski. Mr. Danowski, a graduate of California State College in the fields of mathematics and science, received his M. Ed. degree in educational administration from the University of Pittsburgh where he pursued additional graduate work in administration. Mr. Danowski first taught mathematics for nine years at Roosevelt Junior High School. In 1964 he came to East as assistant principal and in 1967 was named principal of East Junior High School. Three years later he was appointed principal of Gridley Middle School. From 1972-1974, Mr. Danowski was director of all the Erie public middle schools. Then in 1974 he returned to Gridley to his former position as John Danowski principal. On January 13, 1982, he was officially appointed principal of East High School. Mr. Danowski is a past president of the Erie School Administrators’ Association and a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Secondary School Principals, as well as the National Association of Secondary School Principals. In addition, he maintains membership in the American Association of School Administrators and the Pennsylvania Educational Research Association. He lists membership in Phi Kappa Delta and in both the Pennsylvania State Education and the National Education Association. Mr. Danowski is a member of the Blessed Sacrament Ushers’ Society, serves as a Boy Scout counselor, and is an honorary life member of the PTA. Among his outside interests are photography, miniatures, and jogging. Mr. Danowski is married to the former Ersilia Clemente and is the proud father of two daughters: Connie, a music therapy graduate from the College of Wooster and Jean, a senior at Strong Vincent High School. Mr. Danowski brings with him a reputation as a firm disciplinarian. He has a realistic perception of problems accompanied by a creative efficiency in solving them, all underscored by a moderating sense of humor. He is completely committed to improving pride in East High School and to promoting the successes and achievements of the student body. The East High family welcomes back Mr. Danowski to the home of the Scarlet and Gray. 7

Dedication Dedicated to the development of the communication skills of East High students, this talented teacher has succeeded for the past fourteen years in promoting an increased student facility in the language arts. A graduate of Mercyhurst College, she received her M. Ed. in English from Edinboro State College and has taken additional credits in school administration at Penn State. Her teaching experience has included the course work required for students in the seventh, ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade levels. Continually aiding in the development of the secondary English curriculum, she has been a valued member of the school district’s Secondary English Planning Committee, the Fine Arts Committee, the English Curriculum Planning Committee, and the Basic Skills Curriculum Guide Committee. She serves as a member of the faculty committee for the National Honor Society, as well as numerous other faculty committees. Furthermore, she participated in the Middle States evaluation of North Allegheny High School in 1974. For several years she has rallied school spirit in her position as advisor to the cheerleaders and has provided many memorable Senior Proms as advisor to the Prom Committee. Her professional affiliations include service as treasurer of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English, as well as membership in the national organization. For a time she served as building representative of the Erie Education Association, in addition to being a member of the state and national affiliates. She also lists membership in the East High PTA and the AAUW. Her varied interests include an active participation in tennis, bowling, and golf. In recognition of her creative teaching efforts that stress the many aspects of oral and written communication and her continuing interest in the upgrading of the secondary English curriculum, as well as her efforts in improving the interrelated educational abilities of her students, the Sunrise Staff is pleased to dedicate the 1982 edition of the Sunrise to Carole A. Kaminski.
