SUNRISE 1982 Table of Contents Introduction ............................. 3 Administration and Faculty ............... 4 Dedication ............................... 9 Seniors ................................. 16 Sports .................................. 44 Activities .............................. 74 Underclassmen .......................... 102 Patrons ................................ 122 East High School 1151 Atkins Street Erie, Pennsylvania 16503 Introduction As time slowly passes by, we must face the future which awaits our presence. We have grown and changed throughout our years at East High School. Now we are ready to take our first step into the world of opportunity. We must leave East High School and start anew, just as we must someday leave our home and start a new life of our own. We have faced and conquered many challenges throughout our youth, which helped us to grow stronger and wiser. East High School has been that foundation in our youth. As time grants us a new day, so too let us welcome a new future and share past memories as we are now shining through with the class of 1982. The Search Now is the time to search for a new beginning — A time of remember whens, but also a time to look ahead. We have achieved one of our longed for goals And are now looking for a new dimension, A dimension of happiness or sorrow, we do not know. For there are many ifs and buts in this world. Which we have to seek out and conquer. Now we must depend on our own resources. Childhood pranks and pleasures give way to a world of reality and goals that must be met. In our forthcoming efforts to face those obstacles which lay ahead. We must be strong and willing; Willing to work and willing to try that which may be harder than anything else we have ever known. We are here now, willing to search for our place in the world that we have prepared for and that awaits us. — Susan Rupp Class of 1982 Faculty 4 Giving Freely Of Their Time In Memoriam Viola E. Andrews Miss Viola E. Andrews, a graduate of East High School in the class of 1935, received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. She pursued additional graduate studies at Duke University, the University of Wisconsin, and Allegheny College. In addition, she attended the Breadloaf School of English in Vermont and also McMasters University in Canada. At the beginning of her teaching career, she taught in Randolph, New York. Later she spent two years in Japan as Civilian Director of English. After returning to Erie, she taught at the former Erie Tech High School for five years, until she became assistant principal of East High School in 1955. In March of 1967, she was appointed principal of East High School, a position which she retained until her death on November 25, 1981. Miss Andrews had been active in many educational and professional organizations. She was a member of Delta Pi Epsilon, a professional business education society, Phi Delta Kappa, and the American Association of University Women. She was a member of the Secondary School Principals’ Association. She was a founding member, as well as a charter member, of the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English, in addition to being its chairman of publications. She was an active member of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English and served on its board of directors, in addition to being the liaison for several years to the National Council of Teachers of English. On several occasions she had acted as chairman of the visiting committees for the Middle States Evaluating Teams. On May 16, 1976, she was the recipient of a special honor when Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, bestowed on her the honorary doctorate degree in humane letters. Furthermore, Miss Andrews had represented the Erie principals on the Superintendent’s Council, as well as the Administrators’ Association. She was one of the few female secondary school principals in the state of Pennsylvania. Miss Andrews channeled her talents, time, and energy to an enthusiastic and determinedly loyal commitment to East High School. She was an intelligent, well-educated leader, especially knowledgeable in school law, whose counsel and advice were valued by others. Her ability to see several solutions to a problem, as well as her foresight in visualizing the consequences of certain solutions, was a tremendous asset in her leadership position. Even though she was a firm disciplinarian, her students felt that she would help them with their problems. Her tremendous school spirit strengthened the unity of the school and brought a surge of pride in the school’s accomplishments. Her faithful attendance at athletic events had motivated our teams to victory. In her own unique way, she became a part of the fabric of the lives of all who studied and worked at East High School. Although she is no longer with us, the legacy of her spirit still lives in all of us who at some lime were a part of the East High family with her. 6 East Welcomes New Principal The faculty and student body of East High School extend a warm welcome to our new principal, John Danowski. Mr. Danowski, a graduate of California State College in the fields of mathematics and science, received his M. Ed. degree in educational administration from the University of Pittsburgh where he pursued additional graduate work in administration. Mr. Danowski first taught mathematics for nine years at Roosevelt Junior High School. In 1964 he came to East as assistant principal and in 1967 was named principal of East Junior High School. Three years later he was appointed principal of Gridley Middle School. From 1972-1974, Mr. Danowski was director of all the Erie public middle schools. Then in 1974 he returned to Gridley to his former position as John Danowski principal. On January 13, 1982, he was officially appointed principal of East High School. Mr. Danowski is a past president of the Erie School Administrators’ Association and a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Secondary School Principals, as well as the National Association of Secondary School Principals. In addition, he maintains membership in the American Association of School Administrators and the Pennsylvania Educational Research Association. He lists membership in Phi Kappa Delta and in both the Pennsylvania State Education and the National Education Association. Mr. Danowski is a member of the Blessed Sacrament Ushers’ Society, serves as a Boy Scout counselor, and is an honorary life member of the PTA. Among his outside interests are photography, miniatures, and jogging. Mr. Danowski is married to the former Ersilia Clemente and is the proud father of two daughters: Connie, a music therapy graduate from the College of Wooster and Jean, a senior at Strong Vincent High School. Mr. Danowski brings with him a reputation as a firm disciplinarian. He has a realistic perception of problems accompanied by a creative efficiency in solving them, all underscored by a moderating sense of humor. He is completely committed to improving pride in East High School and to promoting the successes and achievements of the student body. The East High family welcomes back Mr. Danowski to the home of the Scarlet and Gray. 7 Dedication Dedicated to the development of the communication skills of East High students, this talented teacher has succeeded for the past fourteen years in promoting an increased student facility in the language arts. A graduate of Mercyhurst College, she received her M. Ed. in English from Edinboro State College and has taken additional credits in school administration at Penn State. Her teaching experience has included the course work required for students in the seventh, ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade levels. Continually aiding in the development of the secondary English curriculum, she has been a valued member of the school district’s Secondary English Planning Committee, the Fine Arts Committee, the English Curriculum Planning Committee, and the Basic Skills Curriculum Guide Committee. She serves as a member of the faculty committee for the National Honor Society, as well as numerous other faculty committees. Furthermore, she participated in the Middle States evaluation of North Allegheny High School in 1974. For several years she has rallied school spirit in her position as advisor to the cheerleaders and has provided many memorable Senior Proms as advisor to the Prom Committee. Her professional affiliations include service as treasurer of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English, as well as membership in the national organization. For a time she served as building representative of the Erie Education Association, in addition to being a member of the state and national affiliates. She also lists membership in the East High PTA and the AAUW. Her varied interests include an active participation in tennis, bowling, and golf. In recognition of her creative teaching efforts that stress the many aspects of oral and written communication and her continuing interest in the upgrading of the secondary English curriculum, as well as her efforts in improving the interrelated educational abilities of her students, the Sunrise Staff is pleased to dedicate the 1982 edition of the Sunrise to Carole A. Cindy Anne Fox, a senior, was involved in an accident while riding her bicycle. Cindy was born on June 9, 1964, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the oldest child of Ronald and Helen Fox and the sister of freshman Ronnie Fox. A member of the National Honor Society, Cindy received the Citizen of the Year Award sponsored by the D.A.R. Cindy was a member of East High’s swimming team and had achieved three letters in the sport. In addition she was a member of the Chi Alpha Youth Group and the Rejoice Youth Choir at the First Assembly of God. Cindy had dedicated her life to the Lord and had already been accepted at Evangel College in Springfield, Missouri for the fall term of 1982. Cindy was a very generous person who would do anything to help those who needed her. She was loved by everyone who knew her, including teachers, students, and friends alike. We here at East High will deeply miss her outstanding Christian example and her warm friendship. 44 Sports Fighting Until The Last Second Boys’ Baseball Row 1: M. Chilcott, C. Nicholson, E. Danowski, M. Szymanski, R. Osiecki, J. Baker. E. Buchanan; Row 2: D. LaRock, D. Honard, D. Craft. J. Zorn. K. Latzo, A. Lewis, P. Crosby. Under coach Kent Williamson, All-Metro honors went to Chip Lewis as first team shortstop, David Honard as first team left-handed pitcher and second team outfielder, Mark Szymanski as second team first baseman and Matt Chilcott as second team first baseman. Trailing close behind for honorable mention were catcher Keith Latzo and outfielder Ron Osiecki. This year two outstanding seniors. Chip Lewis and Keith Latzo, played in the All-Star City-County game. Coach Williamson is looking forward to a super season this year with everyone returning, except the three graduated seniors. Returning lettermen include: Dave Honard, E. J. Buchanan, Matt Chilcott, Mark Szymanski, Ron Osiecki, John Baker, Mike Matos, Jeff Zorn and Pat Crosby. 46 Girls’ Softball Row 1: S. Dancy, M. Stewart. R. Horton, J. Fry; Absent: Coach P. Koval. The Girls' Softball Team ended the 1981 season with a record of 7-9 under Coach Phil Koval. The girls achieved the distinction of being the AA Metro champs. Qualifying for the P1AA District 10 playoffs, they beat Seneca by a score of 8-6 in the quarterfinals, but lost to Conneaut Lake by a score of 13-0 in the semifinals. Placing on the All-Metro Team were Sarah Dancy on the first team as the designated hitter, Elbe Gool on the first team as outfielder, Debbie Flick on the second team as shortstop, and Robin Klein with an honorable mention as outfielder, and Mae Jones with an honorable mention as outfielder. The team, held together by senior Debbie Flick at the shortstop position, was a very young team consisting of one senior, five juniors, four sophomores, and six freshmen. The upcoming season should again see our girls in the winner's circle, since these experienced players will be returning to compete in the 1982 lineup. 47 Boys’ Track Row 1: C. Presley, E. Spagel, G. Watson East High Boys’ Track Team was loaded with underclassmen who performed exceptionally well under Coach Carl Filipowski. Although the won-loss record was unimpressive, their performances were outstanding, all things considered. Upperclassmen Rick Caldwell established a new city mark in the 3200 m with a time of 9:45.1 and Jeff Bush who qualified for the state meet finished seventh overall. Barry Hollamon, Henry Miller, Gordon Burns, Greg Bauman, Tony Hollingsworth and Roosevelt Price, along with John Dembinski, form an excellent nucleus to begin a new track season. There appears to be a light at the end of this tunnel for future years of excellent track teams at East. Other boys to be counted heavily upon are Chris Timon, Ed Moffett, Adrian Smith, Danny Thomas, Randy Allen and Ed Spagel. 48 Girls’ Track Row I: L Ritchie, S. Ponder, T. Turk, J. Bindeman; Row 2: L. Lombardo, T. Tomcho The 1981 East High Girls' Track Team completed their best season ever, finishing with a 4-1 record and amassing 114 points for a second place finish in the Metro Track Meet, New school records were set by Rhonda Lingenfelter in the javelin, Steffanie Ponder in the triple jump, Denise Bauman in the 1600 meter, Laverna Ritchie in the 400 meter, Yvette Bryant in the 800 meter and Laverna Ritchie, Sheila Price, Brookye Keys, and Yvette Bryant in the 3200 meter relay. Robin Carlin also shined when she captured first place in the Metro Meet in the discus throw. 49 Boys’ Cross-Country Row 1: M. Boykin, R. Allen, D. Honard, T. Foor; Row 2: T. Chilcott, Coach C. Filipowski; Row 3: K. Lubak, E. Spagel. C. Visosky, J. Hinspeter, B. Hutchinson, M. Keys, P. Buziewicz, R. Niles, G. Bauman. This year’s team, posting a 5-5 record, was a young team in that there were only four seniors on the team with Dave Honard and Mike Boykin doing yeoman work, consistently placing in the top ten in dual meet competition. The outstanding underclassmen were Greg Bauman, Ed Spagel, Buddy Hutchinson, Pete Buziewicz, Mike Keys, and Kevin Lubak. Greg Bauman placed first in three meets, second in three meets and fourth in four meets, while never finishing lower than fourth in any dual meet. Ed Spagel never finished lower than seventh in nine meets, came in second once and third twice. Dave Honard finished in fifth place six times, and third, fourth, eighth and ninth once each. Other members of the team showing lots of promise and good competitive spirit are James Hinspeter, Bob Chilcott, Tom Visosky, Mike Harrington and Chris Niles. Tom Foor and Randy Allen were the runners that held the team together by their spirit, enthusiasm and desire to win. East did not participate in the district or state meets this year. However, East placed fourth in the sectional meet and ranked seventh in the Gannon Invitational Meet. The returning members for next year’s team can’t wait for next September to arrive. 50 Girls’ Cross-Country Row I: B Keys, C. Fisher; Row 2: B. Schwartz, Coach C. Filipowski. D. Bauman, L. Briggs. The Girls’ Cross-Country Team, under the direction of Coach Carl Filipowski, posted an overall record of 3-2 this season. Brookye Keys set a new school record for the 3.1 mile with a time of 19:46.9. Denise Bauman and Lorri Briggs dueled one another for second runner on the team, while Cindy Fisher and Betty Schwartz ranked fourth and fifth. These five girls comprised the team which battled quite admirably against some very competent runners. Brookye Keys finished first in four meets losing only to Villa’s Bernadette Campbell, whose time was 19:44. besting Keys course record of 19:46.9. Lorri Briggs finished second twice, as well as fourth, fifth, and eighth once each. Denise Bauman finished third three times, as well as fourth and second once each. Keys placed sixth in the Gannon Invitational and received a trophy for her efforts. Brookye was third in the sectional meet, while Denise Bauman and Lorri Briggs picked up trophies for sixth and seventh places respectively. The only thing lacking on the girls’ team was a lack of numbers. If this increases, there is no telling where the Girls’ Cross-Country Team from East will be heading in the next couple of years. 51 Boys’ Tennis Row 1: J. Salow, H. Bcdnaro, R. Groucutt; Row 2: S. Baldwin. T. Burke, Coach M. Grignol. The Warrior Boys’ Tennis Team, under Coach Mike Grignol, lost two close games with a 3-4 score to Tech and Strong Vincent. However, they sported a comeback against St. Mark with a 6-1 victory. Steady singles winner, senior Rich Groucutt highlighted the season. In addition Steve Baldwin and Rich Groucutt participated in District 10 competition. The duo won their first match against Greenville before losing to McDowell which was eventually the winning team. The only returning player will be senior Tim Burke. 52 Girls’ Tennis Row 1: K. Jarmolowicz, P. Klemm, D. Williams; Row 2: Coach P. Arkwright, D. Orloff, M. Wilcher. v ss This year’s tennis team consisted of one returning letterman. Dee Dee Orloff, and four other members: Mary Beth Wilcher, Karen Jarmolowicz, Debbie Williams, and Patty Klemm. Mary Beth, the only senior, was designated as captain for the squad. The girls displayed good sportsmanship during every match, and played their best regardless of the outcome. Mary Beth Wilcher and Dee Dee Orloff teamed up together to win a number of their doubles matches. However, the girls ended their season with a record of one win and seven losses under coach Patti Arkwright. 53 Boys’ Golf Row 1: G. Garland. D. Kindle. J. Robasky; Row 2: J. Laboda. G. Kiddo, Coach T. Pohl. The Boys’ Golf Team, comprised of four seniors and two underclassmen. were disappointed in many matches as they had many opportunities to win but did not. The bright spot of the season was Jim Laboda. As a senior, he competed in both days of the District 10 Tournament at Oakland Beach Golf Course in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. Gene Garland also finished in the top fifteen in the city with a very low stroke average. The team will be looking for more golfers to fill the roster for the upcoming season. Coach Pohl, in his fifth year as coach, is again being cautiously optimistic as he looks for better things in 1982. Members of the 1981 team included Jim Laboda, Greg Kiddo, Scott Cohick, Jim Robasky, Dave Kindle, and Gene Garland. 54 Girls’ Golf Row 1: S. Nemergut, P. Szymanski, L. Woldanski; Row 2: Coach T. Pohl. S. Potts. L. Frankowski, J. Jarmolowicz. J. Horvath. Stepping into the girls’ coaching job this year. Coach Tim Pohl found it very easy to be a contender. With fine performances by seniors Liz Frankowski and JoAnne Jarmolowicz, the team's only losses came from McDowell and Tech, with the Tech match going down to the final girl. The team finished above the .500 mark again, but could not catch McDowell. They are looking forward to next season as a city championship is within their grasp. Members of the 1981 girls’ golf team included Liz Frankowski, JoAnne Jarmolowicz, Stacey Potts, Patty Szymanski, Lisa Woldanski, Sue Nemergut, and Jill Horvath. 55 Varsity Football Row I: S. Holloway, B Henderson; Row 4: Coach J. Bufalino. The 1981-82 Varsity Football Team posted a 4-1-2 record in Metro League play. The team also led in total offense and defense in Metro competition. This year s Warrior offense was led by senior Mike Salter at flanker position and John Baker at tailback. The most famous pass connection was from quarterback Matt Chilcott to tight end Ron Porter. Our outstanding defense was led by senior Mark Granberry at the linebacker position and David Shirley at defensive end who stopped a number of offensive plays. Congratulations to the members of the All-City Team. Placing on the team were seniors John Baker at tailback, Myron Thomas at guard, Mike Salter at wing back, and Ron Porter at tight end. Receiving honorable mention were Matt Chilcott at quarterback and Mark Granberry at the linebacker position. Coaches for this year’s outstanding team were head coach Joe Bufalino and assistant coaches Mike Alexa and Phil Koval. “Next year’s team,” says Coach Bufalino, “will be in a rebuilding year.” This year the team will be losing twenty senior lettermen through graduation. In sum, the 1981 football season was a display of talent, loyalty, and sportsmanship which made this year's football season such a victorious one. 56 J. V. Football Row 1: T. Hollingsworth, P. Under coaches Dale Lewis, Mark Fachetti and Al Murawski, the East High Junior Varsity Football Team completed the 1981 season with a 2-4-1 record. The team upset McDowell and Vincent, but lost close games to Vincent and Prep. The team was plagued this season by injuries in key positions. Speed and defense were the team’s outstanding strengths. Defense was led by Jim Booker, Mike Pope, John Davis, Mike Lubak, Pete Szozorek, Jim Mitchell, Gordon Burns, Roosevelt Price, Aaron Burns, Jose Sama and Jeff Zorn. The offense was led by Roosevelt Price, Tony Hollingsworth, and Gordon Burns. Price was the leading scorer with three touchdowns. Next year’s team will have twelve returning lettermen. However, the team lost to Vincent by only two points and then again to Tech by five points to complete this year’s very short season. Kim Miller, the outstanding junior on the team competed on the uneven bars and in vaulting. Other juniors on the team were Sherrie Robinson and Tina Denning who participated in the floor exercise and Patty Donahue who participated on the balance beam. Outstanding sophomores included Bobbie Jo Spencer on the vault and in the floor exercise. Missy Griebel on the vault, the floor exercise and the balance beam, and Maureen Foor. This year’s team was highlighted by a budding new freshman, Rae Ann Carr who participated in all round events. Sherri Kelsey, another new member of the team, competed on the vault and the uneven bars. Debbie Gomolekoff and Trish Lindenberger participated on the balance beam and uneven bars respectively. Celesia Birchfield, another newcomer, also added spark to the team by her work on the uneven bars and the floor exercise. Next year’s team should be a top contender, since many experienced gymnasts will be returning. Volleyball Row I: K. Miller, Storekeeper, S. Bauer. A. Lipinski. C Jonasen. C. Kalinowski. The 1981 Girls’ Volleyball Team, under the direction of Coach Marijane Dillon, ended their season in a tie for second place in the Metro League with a 9-2 record, but captured first place in the AA competition in the city. The team members are eagerly anticipating the playoffs to be held in late April. Freshman Vicky Stewart helped to turn the team around with her consistent serving. This team played with a great deal of desire and heart which made them the winners they have proved to be. Seniors Ellie Gool and Peg Stewart will be sadly missed, as they were the strong nucleus of the team. Both were named to the First All-City Team. Rhonda Lingenfelter and Vicky Stewart were named to the honorable mention roll. Flowever, four juniors will be returning, along with two sophomores and two freshmen. The girls have been working hard to save their money to go to camp this summer, since the two members sent last year learned so much, that every team member wants to attend to improve her skills. Co-captain Peg Stewart with Coach Marijane Dillon and Co-captain Ellic Gool. 61 Boys’ And Girls’ Swimming s. Row 1: K. Mazzone. K. Dowd, S Buckel, L. Bertolo, D. Renzi, S. Boettiger. B. Little; Row 2: L. Cohick, P. Dowd, A. Schultz. A. Smith, Mr. M. Kiddo, Coach. Purzycki, Manager, M. DiRaimo. J. Hubbard. The East High Swim Team had a mediocre year with a seasons record of 1-4 that included a victory over Academy with almost everyone on the East team placing first or second. The times of the swimmers, however, improved, which was a strong point of the team. For the first time this year the boys’ and the girls' swim teams were combined under the leadership of Coach Mark Kiddo and assistant coach Mike Dowd. Lisa Purzycki acted as scorekeeper and manager for the team. Terry Bishop qualified for the Districts in the 100-yard backstroke, but unfortunately was unable to compete because of a wrist injury. Outstanding swimmers for East included seniors Lisa Bertolo, Kris Mazzone, Kathleen Dowd, Pat Dowd, and Joe Hubbard, ably assisted by juniors Scott Cohick. Terry Bishop, James Dempsey, Alan Schultz and Brenda Little, as well as sophomores Darcie Renzi, Andy Smith, Sue Buckel and freshman Mark DiRaimo. With continued support from the underclassmen. Coach Kiddo expects a better season of improved performances. 63 Boys’ Varsity Basketball Row I: T. Bumpers, R. Billups, D, Pullium, M. Salter, Co-captain, J. Young, S. Carson, Co-captain; Row 2: M. Chilcott, E. Moffett, J. Burns. V. Gavin, M. Szymanski, R. Osiecki, G. Thompson, D. Shirley. The 1981-82 Varsity Basketball Team fell on hard times during the season, as a teacher walkout prevented the squad from getting into tip-top shape. Under Coach Kent Williamson, the team that included all seniors but one will rebuild for the future with hard workouts that will begin in August. The Warriors will miss such players as Greg Thompson, Shawn Carson, Mike Salter, Jeff Young, Dave Shirley, Matt Chilcott, Ron Billups, Ron Osiecki, Mark Szymanski, Vernon Gavin, Ed Moffett, and Jeff Burns and will rely on Dave Pullium for leadership during the 1982-83 season. The Warriors will rebuild and will be strong contenders in the future. 64 65 Girls’ Varsity Basketball Row 1: S. Caswell, Manager, M. Jones, P. Stewart, M. Turk, Captain, D. Fisher, M. Stewart with Captain M. Turk and Co-captain K. Hick. 66 This year’s East High Girls' Varsity Basketball Team can be described as young, since in many games there were four starting sophomores. The girls’ varsity ended the season on a four-game winning streak that in the process defeated play-off bound teams Academy and St. Benedict’s. The team was provided with outstanding leadership from its captain Monica Turk who was voted to the City Senior All-Star Team. The lone junior on the team was Denise Bauman. The six sophomores who dominated the team and gained valuable experience were Patrice Burns, Diane Fisher, the leading scorer - with a 11.8 scoring average, Mae Jones, with a 10.1 scoring average, Valencia Jones, Tina Turk, and Christine Williams, the leading rebounder with a 13.6 per game average. Things will continue to look up for the varsity team for years to come, if these young people maintain their discipline, desire, and defense. Boys’ J. V. Basketball Row 1: S. Thomas, J. Ponder, S. McMahon It was with regret that the faculty and student body of East High learned of the retirement in September of the chairman of the foreign language department, Mary F. McMahon. A graduate of Seton Hill College and Edinboro State College, she received her M.A. degree from Allegheny College. For several years she taught Latin and English at Corry High School. Then she taught English at Academy before coming to East High where she taught Latin, German, and all levels of English for twenty-five years. Miss McMahon was a master teacher in the humanities who enjoyed teaching and learning with her students. Creativity, enthusiasm and hard work were trademarks of her teaching style. Under her direction the Latin Club and the German Club participated in such diverse activities as Latin Banquets and Kris Kringle celebrations. For several years she sponsored the College Club, was a member of the Teachers’ Bowling League, and served on many school committees, including the Banquet Committee, the Prom Committee, the National Honor Society Committee, and the Teachers’ Social Committee. She acted as a cooperating teacher for several student teachers from Gannon University, Villa Maria College and Edinboro State College. In 1961 the Sunrise was dedicated to her. Among her varied educational affiliations are membership in the Sigma Kappa Phi, the National Foreign Language Fraternity, the Classical League of Pennsylvania, the Classical League of Northwestern Pennsylvania, the Modern Language Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, the NEA, PSEA, and EEA. She is very active in the Seton Hill Alumnae Club of Erie and the Women’s Club of Erie. She is a member of Gannondale Auxiliary and attends the Erie Philharmonic concerts, and the Erie Civic Music Association performances, as well as the Erie Playhouse productions. She has traveled extensively in the United States and Canada. Her European travels have included such countries as Ireland, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. The faculty and student body of East High extend to her their best wishes for a most happy, healthy and enjoyable retirement. After thirty-two years in the field of communication arts, John W. Peplinski, chairman of the English Department, retired in early January. A graduate of East High, Mr. Peplinski received his bachelor’s degree from Gannon University and his master’s degree from Case Western Reserve University. Before coming to East, he taught briefly at Roosevelt and Memorial Junior High Schools. He has worked with all levels of English, but for the past several years he has worked exclusively with the students in the twelfth grade. He had been a cooperating teacher for several student teachers from Gannon University and Alliance College. In 1974 the Sunrise was dedicated to him. He has served on the English Curriculum revision committee, as well as the commencement, the banquet, the school ring, and the National Honor Society committees. He was a gallon donor to the Community Blood Bank. He is especially fond of camping and traveling in the West and enjoys aquatic life. He is an avid competitive runner and has competed in many races which he has won. The faculty and student body of East High wish him a happy and productive retirement. 123 John W.
