We are eager to enter the world of work or study with the diverse challenges they offer. Hopefully, our preparation in this land's finest school will be a stepping stone to continued success in our chosen fields of endeavor. Throughout our stay at East, our dear school song has meant many things to us as it touched on different facets of our life at East High. It provided a spirited motivation to produce our best efforts academically. It rallied us to demonstrate our athletic ability and good sportsmanship. It gave us a feeling of unity as we participated in our many extracurricular activities and functions. It is this proud spirit epitomized in the words of our school song that has most definitely characterized our years as members of the East High student body. So it is with pride that the Sunrise Staff has chosen the spirit of East High as it is reflected in the words of the Alma Mater as the theme for the 1980 Sunrise. EAST HIGH ALMA MATER You may search through the whole wide country Ev’ry city ev’ry state. From the northland to the southland Of our union strong and great. You will find no school that’s finer Measure by what test you may. And it's our own school, our dear East High We hail with pride today. Then to East High our Alma Mater Do we pledge loyal hearts and true. May we e'er keep thy dear name unspoiled And thy colors unsullied, too. May the Scarlet and Gray float o’er us Lead us onward from day to day Then give three cheers for our East High Rah! Rah! Rah! Three cheers for the Scarlet and Gray. Copy of musical score by Susan Wassell. Class of 1982. Administration And Faculty We Pledge Loyal Hearts And True . East High School Principal Viola E. Andrews Principal of East High School To the Class of 1980 There is always a bit of sadness when one is ready to leave a place that was part of one’s life for so many years. Each year was a milestone and a step nearer to achieving one’s goal in life. May you realize your dreams and remember with fondness your days at East High School. Sincerely. i__£ Viola E. Andrews. Who are they?” is the caption across the bulletin board of this East High faculty member who has been a daily part of each senior class for the past several years. A recipient of a bachelor's degree from Heidelberg College, this social studies teacher has engaged in a twenty-three year teaching career that started with fifth and sixth grade at Perry School, advanced to seventh and eighth grade at Roosevelt, included a year at Columbus Intermediate School in Tustin. California, and proceeded to eighteen years at East High School. His students value his expertise as an instructor of economics, law. and government, as well as a challenging educator in the A. P. History class. His elective course in applied consumerism was one that many seniors valued for its practical, functional aspects. In his position as senior class advisor, he has efficiently coordinated class elections, and directed the submarine sandwich sale, the sale of class mugs and T-shirts, and other fund-raising projects. He is chairman of the social studies department and a member of the faculty committee for the National Honor Society. Also he has served on curriculum committees for twelfth grade social studies programs. In addition he has successfully coached the boys’ and the girls’ golf teams for the past several seasons and has had a Pennsylvania State golf champion. Of course, golf and travel are among his many diverse interests. In recognition of his valued service as a challenging and motivating teacher in citizenship education and his creative leadership as senior class mentor, the yearbook staff proudly dedicates the 1980 SUNRISE to Charles N. Kent. Counselors Leonard Andrzejewskl Guidance Counselor Agnes R. Cecho Guidance Counselor 10 Harry M. Edwards Geraldine D. Zurn Leonard L. LoCastro PRESIDENT Harold C. Although starting out with some inexperienced players, the East High team quickly showed people that the end of the rebuilding process was not far away. With ninety-eight per cent of all starters being underclassmen, the East team will be back in top form during the 1980 season. Two consistent starters were seniors Wally Walczak and Buddy Bish. Other starters included Jeff Wurst. Tim Eoor. Chip Lewis. Carl Nicholson. Scott Martin. Keith Latzo. Dave Eubank. Pat Hart, and Nick Anderson. Although the record didn't indicate it. there were some super efforts displayed by a handful of athletes. Lionel Young established a new school high jump record at 6' 5 and Tony Lee set a new standard in the triple jump with a leap of 44' 22 1 2 at the district meet. Alvin Jones became a mainstay in the hurdle events by going a long way before tasting defeat. However, since meters were used in this ’79 season for the first time, new records were established in all running events by various track members. The highlights of the season, perhaps, were capturing a third place trophy in the Eairview Invitational Meet and placing fifth overall in the Metro Meet. Jenny was named to the All Metro first team, with Julie Gool named to the All-Metro second team and Denise Zielinski nominated to an honorable mention position. Seven underclassmen will return to the starting lineup in 1980. Returning to play on next year’s team are catcher Peg Stewart, Denise Zielinski at first base. Mary Frankowski at second base. The offensive was led by the expert running of Scott Martin, Junior Baskin, and Robert Mickens. The pass receiving honors went to Gilbert Marsh who caught thirty three passes for 7X) yards and five touchdowns. At quarterback it was Nick Anderson who completed 50% of his passes and had a total offense of 960 yards. Defensive standouts included Geroge Perry, Ted Dance. Shawn Carson. Pat Hart, and Scott Martin. After four games the Warriors managed to attain a 3-1 record, including an upset victory over Metro Champ Tech, before falling to a final record of 3-7, as depth and injuries proved to be too great of a problem. East wound up second in the Metro League and took a second place in the Section Meet. Competing in AA District Meet with twenty-four teams on the line. East took a sixth place. Over all. this season saw one of the finest turnouts with twenty-one boys participating in dual meets. Seniors like Donald Keys and Perry Keys, along with Chuck Schwenk, will be missed next season, as will Jeff Flagg who came on strong as the season progressed. The returning members of the team should produce another outstanding team with seasoned performers like Rich Caldwell who qualified for the State Meet taking fifth place in Districts. Other truly fine runners include Bob Romecki, Chris Carlin. Tom Foot. Dave Honard, and Ron Osiecki. Promising freshman performers include Mike Podalski, Gary Miller. Paris Favors. Dave Mowrey, and Ed Powell. Upperclassmen like Dave Scribner. Dave Craft. Walter Gray, and Greg Holland afford a stabilizing impact on the younger members of the team. The team consisting of eight seniors and four juniors were led by senior captains Everett Jones and Kevin Johnson, who were also the leading scorers. Top in assists were John Jones and Lionel Young with most rebounds going to Billy Pryor and Everett Jones. Rookie of the year was John Jones with Chip Lewis and Dave Eubank both garnering the title of Mr. Hustle. Coach Don Kolakowski’s players’ strength was demonstrated in their quickness and ability to get the interior rebounds. This enabled them to play a fastbreak offense and a tough zone defense. The team also had many mental as well as physical strengths. They were twelve dedicated players, who played team ball with an enormous amount of pride. After the close of this season, the seniors will be missed, but the future outlook for the 1980-81 Warriors will still be good with four experienced performers returning: John Jones, Tim Norton. Alan Lewis and Robert Marsh. With the addition of members from an excellent performing J. V. team, the same style of play should continue with a return to the playoffs within reach. Mary Frankowski, Bev Aldridge, and Pam Brzezinski contributed much to the spirit and character of the team. Juniors Annette Burns. Patti Charles. Debbie Flick, Kathy Goss, Lynda Pryor, and Sandi Tate gained much valuable experience that will be put to good use next year. New experiences abounded for the girls this season. For the first time they had the opportunity to play in an out-of-town tournament in Bradford during the Thanksgiving holiday. A. Mossburg. V. Fohner. S. Washek. T. Spagel. S. Colonnese, The girls' swim team was very strong this season under Coach Fred Evans. Leading the girls were Senior Tracy Bishop, Junior Tracy Darr. and Sophomore Kris Mazzone. Tracy Bishop specialized in the 100-yard freestyle, Tracy Darr in the 100-yard butterfly, and Kris Mazzone in the 100-yard back stoke. Many of this season's performers will be returning next year, including Monica Krystak in the 100-yard backstroke and Sue Colonnese in the 100-yard back stroke. The girls should be ready to present a challenge to all opponents. Kris Mazzone was a sophomore standout. Tracy Darr excelled in the 100-yard butterfly. Wrestling Chris Carlin was a freshman standout. Henry Miller takes his opponent down. The 1979 80 wrestling season was a pleasant surprise. The addition of many new underclassmen gave needed depth to the many excellent team members returning. Among the team's many outstanding wrestlers were Seniors Donald Keys. Perry Keys, and Chuck DeAngelo with Junior Adam Tate and Sophomore Myron Thomas. Freshmen included Chris Carlin and Solomon Carr. The team excelled in tournaments as well as in regular competition. Don Keys won first place in the General McLane Tournament and second in the Metro Tournament. Perry Keys took second in both tournaments with Myron Thomas taking a second place in the Metro Tournament. All three are expected to do well in post season competition. Coach Michael Maines is very proud of his team and is sorry to see so many leaving after this season because of graduation, ineligibility or transference to other schools. However, the outlook is good for next year with a winning season predicted. Senior Donald Keys was champion at 98 lbs. Row I: M. Thomas. B. Dann. C. Sweeney. S. Carr. M. Carr. H Miller. P. Keys.
