This year the 1979 yearbook staff has chosen Happiness is . . . as the theme for the SUNRISE. We feel that this theme accurately portrays the spirit which has grown strong as we have worked and played together. The Class of 1979 has maintained an optimistic outlook throughout our high school years. We hope to continue this spirit after graduation. As a group, we have learned to find happiness by showing good sportmanship in every game we participated in, regardless of whether we won or lost. A sincere satisfaction was realized in just knowing we did our best in a hard game. We have enjoyed the immense pleasure of becoming involved in school activities and eagerly helping one another to share in group achievement. But the most rewarding aspect of our stay at East has been the happiness of being among friends who enjoyed many good experiences. As the event-filled years have raced by, we have made new acquaintances, as well as lifelong friends who will always be there when needed. We shall never forget these friends nor the part that they have played in our lives. We owe a great deal to our instructors whose efforts to prepare us for the world ahead are deeply appreciated. Now we recognize the great importance of our learning experiences and eagerly anticipate their application in the near future. But always a precious portion of our hearts and minds will remain here at our alma mater, for truly happiness is EAST HIGH SCHOOL. 3 Administration And Faculty Happiness is . . . sharing knowledge. East High School Principal Viola E. Andrews Principal of East High School The only way to have a friend is to be one. . . . Emerson, ESSAYS To the Class of 1979: You have made friends during your years at East High School; and you may continue these friendships after you graduate. You will also make new friends during your lifetime. May each old friend and each new friend share your joys and trials and make you grow in confidence. Sincerely, £• Q-ri x Viola E. Andrews, Principal 6 Assistant Principals John R. Martine Rupert J. Stadtmiller Assistant Principal Assistant Principal 7 8 MARY L. DUNCAN Dedication For the past sixteen years, this teacher has displayed leadership and service in the communication arts and in the personal development of many East High students. A graduate of Albertus Magnus College, she previously taught eighth and ninth grade English, social studies, and typing at Sheriden Junior High School in Connecticut, before starting her career at East High in English and typing. Her communication skills are further evidenced in her position as adviser of the school newspaper and literary magazine. Under her direction, the Student Council has conducted Christmas drives for food and toys, has sponsored assemblies, and has conducted the magazine sale, as well as the drive for the new stadium seats. She is enthusiastically involved with senior activities in her position as coordinator of the senior banquet committee, the name cards and announcements committee, yearbook patrons, and commencement arrangements. Furthermore, she is eleventh grade class adviser and chairman of the faculty fund. She has also served on the principal's advisory committee and was a member of the steering committee for East High's evaluation. In addition to being a member of the local, state, and national teachers' organizations, she is an active participant in the Northwestern Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English. She has completed additional course work at Albertus Magnus College, Teachers' College of Connecticut, New York University, and Villa Maria College. Included in her varied interests are gardening, travel, the theater, and work with the Miss Erie County Beauty Pageant. In recognition of her continuous efforts in advancing the communication skills of East High students and through this projecting a positive image of our school, the yearbook staff appreciatively dedicates the 1979 SUNRISE to Mary L. Duncan. 9 Counselors Leonard Andrzejewski Agnes R. Cecho James M. Miller Guidance Counselor Guidance Counselor Guidance Counselor L eonard L. LoCastro Edmond T. GiovannelH Ruth A. Faced with the tremendous disadvantage of inexperience by having only one starter returning, the team played many hard-fought games and lost to opposing clubs by a mere touchdown or less. The much needed experience on the field, however, finally developed when East defeated Bradford at the end of the season by a score of 28-7. East led the Metro League in passing offense. Outstanding seniors this year included Mark Beskid, Lamar Hamilton, Tony Lee, John Popoff, Tom Ricketts, and Tom Woodard. 47 Homecoming Janet Walkiewicz with escort Dan Susi Janice Craig with escort Teddy McNeil Queen Karen Pomorski with Captain Tony Lee 48 Wendy Matson with escort Dave Pjecha Jenny Sonney with escort Al Murawski Junior Varsity Football Row 1: C. Belief in victory was the cornerstone that led to this year's 6-3-1 city championship record for the J.V. football team. In addition defense was an outstanding factor in this year's program. The defense recorded a total of six shutouts. In ten games, the defense yielded just forty-four points for an average of 4.4 points per game. Defensive standouts included Ted Dance, Shawn Carson, Mark Adam, Ed Danowski, Greg Thompson, and Myron Thomas. Offensively, the team lacked consistent scoring power. Forced to shift personnel because of injuries, the offense never really operated up to full potential. Those players that did perform consistently were Robert Mickens, Andre Stuart, Mark Williams, Cameron Presley, Charles Miller, John Baker, and Keith Latzo. In the final game of the year, Phil Curlett ran the opening kick off back eighty-five yards to clinch a tie for the city championship with Prep. Coaches Tony Verga, Jr. and Phil Koval would like to thank all those on the team for making this year's season of East High J.V. football something to be remembered. 49 Boys’ Baseball Row 1: N. Bish. Much is expected from returnees Nick Anderson, Dave Eubank, Tim Foor, Keith Latzo, Alan Lewis, Scott Martin, Dave Craft, Ken LaRock, Jeff Wur-st,and John Wilson. No doubt we'll miss Metro batting champ Billy Schweitzer and All-Star players Dale Lewis, Brian Roth, Mark Oldach, and Jim Eller who graduated. You can be sure that this year's East High baseball team will play with the pride of the Big Warrior in the Sky and give East another team to be proud of. Seniors W Walczak, R Bish, J. East High led the All-Metro team with seven girls named for the honor. Rose Kalinowski and Ida Thomas were unanimous choices for the second straight year. Elaine Satyshur, Janet Satyshur, Cheryl Ford, and Jenny Sonney were also named to the first team. Kerry Gausman was awarded an honorable mention position. The city Senior All-Star team was also led by East High girls. Cheryl Eord was voted the most valuable player with Janet Satyshur voted as the best offense player and Ida Thomas named as Golden Gloves. The team members are anticipating another record year in 1979. 51 Boys’ Track Row 1: D. Keys, T.Whipple, M.CIine,). Johnson, |. Coleman,). Torain, F. Grant, I Young, D. Heidelberg, B. East opened with wins over Seneca and Strong Vincent, but lost the next four meets on the schedule. East wound up last in the Metro Meet, even though the scoring was much better than the previous season. East lost a few good members on the squad via graduation, but there should be a good nucleus coming back. Outstanding competitors like Alan Barnett, Andy Dawson, and joe Bargielski will be hard to replace. Nonetheless, there are some outstanding young underclassmen who will be around two or three more years. We should have plenty of sprinters, adequate distance runners, and the field events should improve over last year. All in all, the prospects for a good season are there, with the ability to produce under pressure yet to be tested. 52 Girls’ Track Row 1: M. Colonnese, D. Eddy; Row 2: P Clanton, B. Bakker, Mr. M. Maines, Coach; Absent: Mr. D. Feeney, Coach. The 1977-78 edition of the girls' track team featured a much improved and spirited squad. Our only win of the season, oddly enough, came against D-10 champion Academy, when Kathy Schwenk dramatically tied the school record in the high jump to score the win. During the city meet, an unusual happening occurred. East girls captured first and second place in the 110-yard low hurdles. Champion Betsy Schweitzer and runner-up Tammy Holloway both broke the old existing city record. Tammy was also the only girl representing East at the state meet. Outstanding performances were turned in by Anna Clanton, Brenda Glover, and Pam Clanton in the dashes and relays; by Carolyn Buckel and Denise Lipinski in the distances; by Jogien Bakker, Karen Pomorski, Barb Jones, and Tammy Holloway in the field events and by Kathy Schwenk and Tammy Holloway in the middle distance races. 53 Girls’ Tennis Row 1: Mrs. M. ). Colab, Coach, A. Clanton, K. Goss, K. Rapp, C. Buckel; Row 2: P. Orloff, H. Wilcher, M. Frankowski, K. Gardner. East's season in girls' varsity tennis showed a 0-6 record, but the loss of only one senior promises a seasoned team next year. The competition was stiff, but the girls faithfully carried on and never lost their fine attitude. Tennis is not only an individual sport in this situation, but also a team sport. East should be proud of these girls for maintaining their spirit, sense of responsibility, and sportsmanship. Boys’ Tennis Row 1: C. Domeracki, R. Groucutt, K. Johnson, D. Scribner; Row 2: G. Thompson, R Tuberson, T. Molder, K. Fowler, Mr. J. Spinelli, Coach. The East High boys' tennis team completed a disappointing season with a 0-14 mark. Competing in the tough Metro League, the Warriors were up against some of the top players in the state. Departing seniors Ron Tuberson, Mike Eggleston, Kevin Fowler, and Greg Thompson led the team. Promising underclassmen Kevin Johnson, Rich Groucutt, Tim Molder, Craig Domeracki, and Dave Scribner will be counted on to bring the team to a victorious season. 55 Boys’ Cross-Country Row 1: D. Keys, R. Caldwell, P. Keys, C. Schwenk; Row 2: T. Foor, B. Romecki, C. Lewis, E. Eichenlaub. This year's cross-country team was probably the most potential-laden group ever to run at East. They had come a long way, considering talent lost and new talent developed. The record was a mere 3-8, but by season's end, the boys were running with respectable times. Such unknown runners like Ricky Cladwell and Chuck Schwenk proved to be real finds as their enthusiasm and desire showed the way for the other newcomers. Perry and Donald Keys, along with Chip Lewis and Jeff LaRock, were the returning lettermen. Other members of the team, Eric Eichenlaub, Rob Romecki, and Tom Foor will help to make an improved team for next year, since all are underclassmen with only Jeff LaRock departing from their ranks. Hopefully, barring any misfortunes, East High cross-country will have a great season next year. 56 Girls’ Cross-Country Kneeling: B. Baskin, C. Schoop; Standing: S. Wassell, K. Schwenk, Coach Mr. C. Filipowski, M Powell, |. Johnson. This year's edition of the girls' cross-country team was late in organizing for the meets. The season record of 0-4 attests to that fact. Kathy Schwenk was the only runner with any experience on the team. However, a little recruiting by Cindy Shoop and Kathy produced a fine group of runners with inexperience and lack of training their only drawbacks. Mary Powell proved to be an outstanding novice. She is probably a true pure runner as runners go. The potential and ability are there, as attested by a fifteenth place finish in the District Meet. Other members returning with hopeful prospects for next season are Sue Wassell, Kris Mazzone, Karen Kimet, Kathy Dowd, Barbara Baskin, and Jean Johnson. 57 Girls’ Golf Row 1: ). Sonney, D. Langer, S. Domeracki, L. Wisinski; Row 2: E. Satyshur, K. Gausman, K. Pomorski, Coach Mr. C. Kent. The East High girls' golf team won four out of six matches this season. After four straight city series championships, the girls had to settle for second place behind McDowell this year. Including this season the girls' golf team has compiled a record of 22 wins and 3 losses. Most of this success is due to the outstanding play and leadership of Elaine Satyshur. Elaine finished her high school golfing career by winning her third District Ten championship and by tying for third place in the State Playoffs at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Supporting Elaine this year were Karen Pomorski and Jenney Sonney with newcomers Kerry Gausman, Darlene Langer, Marianne McCarty, Sandy Domeracki, and Lisa Wisinski. With six seniors graduating this year, the team will need some new recruits to join Darlene and Lisa next year. Coach Kent was very proud of the competitive spirit and character of the girls' team. 58 Boys’ Golf B. Dougherty, D. Eichenlaub, Coach Mr. T. Pohl, C. Kiddo, B Publicover, L. Armel, C. Domeracki. The boys' golf team finished their season this fall with their best record since 1973. The team finished with a 2-8 record and were tied for fourth place in the city. The team consisted of the following members under the direction of Coach Pohl: Craig Domeracki, Doug Kindle, Lenny Armel, Barry Publicover, Greg Kiddo, Brian Dougherty, and Dave Eichenlaub. The team's victories came at the hands of Tech and Vincent by the scores of 15-9 and 20-4 respectively. The team lost to Tech in the opener 13-11 and could have had sole possession of fourth place with a victory in that match. The most consistent members of the team are Domeracki, Kindle, and Armel with Kiddo being very instrumental in the two victories. Brian Dougherty, his first year on the team, broke into the line up with some fine golf. Dave Eichenlaub was a potent third place alternate. Continued good luck to our finest boys' golf team since 1973. 59 Boys’ Varsity Basketball Row 1: D. Aiken, S. Martin, H. Baskin, K. Johnson, L. Johnson, D. Eubank, B. Pryor, B Dann, T. Lee, C. Darr, D. Young, E. Jones, E. Jones; Row 2: J. Monde, Manager, M. Moffett, Manager. The 1978-79 Warrior Boys' Varsity Basketball team ended the season with a record of ten wins and twelve losses. The team was led offensively by Kevin Johnson, the Most Valuable Player, as well as by Mark Johnson and Everett Jones in rebounding. Leading the defensive charge was Elmer Jones. With only four seniors graduating, Mark Johnson, Elmer Jones, Roy Carson, and Tony Lee, who was named to the city Senior All-Star team, the roundballers have a fine foundation for next year's team. Ten experienced juniors will be returning for action next year. They are led by Billy Pryor, Kevin Johnson, Everett Jones, Dave Eubank, Mr. Hustle in games and practice, and Lionel Young, whose consistent performance on and off the court characterized him as this year's best first-year player. We wish the 1979-80 varsity basketball team and Coach Kolakowski the best of luck. 60 Seniors: M. Johnson, E. Jones, T. Lee. 61 Girls’ Varsity Basketball Row 1: B. Aldridge, K. Gausman, E. Satyshur, M. Cutter, D. 2: Mr. T. Matusiak, Coach, M. Frankowski, L. Langer, A. Zielinski, P. Brzezinski, M. Howard, S. Chilcott, Manager; Row Clanton, L. Carson, C. Buckel, M.Goss. 62 The East High Girls' Varsity Basketball Team ended the season with an 8 wins and 6 losses record. There were many bright spots during this season, such as setting the school record of 81 points in one game against McDowell. Having 3 of the 12 players on the squad as seniors means that East High girls' basketball should be on the rise. The young, inexperienced girls participated in all of the games with the exception of two. Hopefully, this experience will have a good effect on the team next year, so they will be able to win their games. The three seniors, also tri-captains of the team, were Maria Cutter, Kerry Gausman, and Elaine Satyshur. Coach Matusiak looks forward to another winning season for the girls' varsity basketball team. 63 Boys’ J.V. Basketball Row 1: D. Craft, J. Young, M. Salter, J. Jones, D. Jones, Sherrod, T. Norton, C. Thompson, R. Marsh, R. Ross. P. Curlett; Row 2: D. Shirley, S. Carson, C. Lewis, J. During what must be considered a rebuilding year, the East High J.V. basketball team compiled a 10-12 season. The team, with only one returning letterman in Chip Lewis, also included nine ninth-grade players. Highlights of the season included a win string of eight in a row and nine in the last twelve games, all occurring during the last half of the season. The team also placed third in the Metro League with upset wins over Academy, McDowell, and Strong Vincent. Chip Lewis, John Jones, Tim Norton, Jim Sherrod, and Mike Salter were standout players during the season. Top scorers on the team included: John Jones — 278 points — 12.1 average Chip Lewis — 245 points — 11.1 average Tim Norton — 195 points — 9.0 average Jim Sherrod — 109 points — 5.0 average Under Coach Paul Perowicz, the team exhibited balanced scoring and featured an excellent team attitude. 64 Girls’ J.V. Basketball Row 1: M. Wilcher, Manager, C. Wilhelm, S. Moffatt, Charles, M. Turk, A. Burns, S. Tale, D. Fullerton, D. Flick. S. Price, D. langer, K. Goss; Row 2: L, Frankowski, P. After a disastrous start by losing the first three games, the girls' junior varsity basketball team pulled themselves together to end the season with six wins and eight losses. The team had a four-game winning streak at one point in the season. Some strong points were rebounding and defense. The weak points were lack of consistent offense, turnovers, and the fact that a new coach, Mr. Tony Verga, Jr., introduced a new system. The leading scorer was Sandi Tate with seven points per game. Annette Burns led the team in rebounds. Kathy Goss had the most assists with Debbie Flick leading the defense. 65 Water Polo Row 1: J. Husted, W. Short, ). Ewanick, ). Sadler, Chylinski, T. Whipple, M. Kiddo, E. Ponder, V. C. Schutte. Row 2: Mr F, Evans, Coach; S. Heubel, S. Gonzalez, Manager. Water polo is exciting to watch, but it's even better to play. Ask Earl Ponder who achieved first string All-City forward position and Joe Ewanick and John Sadler who both gathered honorable mention positions. These forwards kept the goals coming hot and heavy this year. Getting the ball to the forwards, were guards William Short, Jon Husted, Mark Kiddo, and Charles Schutte. Protecting the home goal was either Terry Whipple or Brian Dougherty. The season produced many exciting games. Often, the game-winning goal came in the last few seconds of play. Unfortunately, the Warriors were held to a winless season. Because of the loss of several seniors. Coach Evans is looking for many freshmen interested in being a winning part of this fast-action sport next year. 66 Boys’ Swimming Row 1: ). Sadler, R. Short, C. Schutte, ). Wilson, J. C. Domeracki, P Crosby, R. Wilhelm, D. Eichenlaub. Smith, P. Menosky, M. Kiddo. Row 2: Mr. F. Evans, Coach, The Warrior Swim Team had a difficult season this year. Although winless, the Warriors were led by Senior Bill Short in the 50-yard and the 100-yard freestyle and by Sophomore Charles Schutte in the 100-yard breaststroke. Helping in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle were Sophomore Craig Domeracki and Freshman Pat Crosby. The backstroke event was controlled by Sophomore Jeff Smith. Helping out was Dean Klemu-shin, one of the better freshman prospects in the breaststroke. Also Sophomore Dave Eichenlaub filled in the roster on a young Warrior swim- 67 ming team. Most of the team members had never swum in competition before this year. Led by Junior Tracy Bishop, the outstanding all-around swimmer, the Warriors have a sound foundation for a winning team next year. Freestylers Linda Presley, Tracy Darr, Annette Mossburg, and Renee Desin, along with backstroker Robin Carlin, helped the incoming freshmen develop their swimming abilities. The powerful freshmen are freestylers Sheryl Fox, Rose Maloney, Julie Slupski, and Michelle Clinger. At breastroke are Debbie Harrison and Kris Mazzone. Swimming backstroke are Sue Wassell and Tricia Cody. 68 Girls’ Volleyball Row 1: J. Sonney, K. Gausman, E. Satyshur, D. Lipinski, L. Brodziak; Row 2: K. Pomorski, R. Carlin, J. Cool, E. Cool, M. Davis It is with sincere regret that the faculty and student body of East High School learned of the retirement in January of Margaret Davis, our former girls' physical education teacher. A graduate of Wittenburg University, she taught for twenty-three years, first as a fourth, fifth, and sixth grade teacher at Harding and Cleveland schools, and then for thirteen years as gym instructor at East High. She did graduate work at Edinboro State College, the University of Pittsburgh, and Penn State University. Furthermore, Mrs. Davis attended twirling workshops and camps, as well as clinics in tennis, gymnastics, softball, volleyball, and basketball. She was girls' athletic director and coach of girls' varsity basketball. She initiated girls' bowling at East and coached the first girls' teams in basketball, tennis, and gymnastics. In addition she participated on a committee for intramural sports, worked on a course of study in health, and helped with the evaluation of the Springdale, Pennsylvania High School. For many years Mrs. Davis coordinated school sales. She also used her musical talents as faculty advisor for twirling and most recently as faculty director of Eastcapades. She was the youngest player ever selected to play percussion with the Erie Philharmonic and ranked first in high school in the state orchestra and first in state band at college. Listed among her professional affiliations are the Pennsylvania Physical Education Association, the American Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association. Her participation in community service covers volunteer work in hospitals and for the Junior Red Cross, counseling and leadership at Girl Scout Camp, assistance at the WQLN auction, and entertainment as a clown for parades and parties. She enjoys bowling and arts and crafts, particularly fabric painting and rug hooking. To Mrs. Davis, an extremely talented and service-minded teacher, the faculty and student body extend wishes for a very happy, productive, and successful retirement. Vera A. Hart After twenty-two years as an educator, Vera Hart, our current instructor of girls' physical education, will retire in June. Mrs. Hart, a graduate of East High School, received her Bachelor of Science Degree in education from Ohio University and did graduate work at Penn State and Villa Maria College. For many years she has taught health, pool, and mathematics. She is a certified instructor in water safety, life saving, first aid, and civil defense. Furthermore, she has attended many workshops dealing with problems and techniques in the health field. For several years Mrs. Hart sponsored the girls' Swim Club and gave many hours of volunteer service to the Erie Chapter of the Red Cross.
