Administration and Faculty ......., Dedication ................................... Seniors .......... Sports ............... Activities ............. Underclassmen ....... Patrons ................ East High School 1151 Atkins Street Erie, Pennsylvania 16503 1 2 Introduction As seniors this past year, we have been in the process of concluding our career of long hours of study and now anticipate a future of daily experiences to which we can apply our knowledge. Our teachers have broadened our outlooks and have made us aware of the vastness of all areas of learning. We will take the knowledge and values we have learned and will apply and test them in our daily lives. Through our friendships with our classmates, we have learned valuable lessons in personal relationships. Some of us will keep our everyday friendships with fellow students, whereas some of us will break old ties and establish new bonds of friendship in the future of our experience. Our participation in sports and activities has taught us valuable lessons concerning responsibility, commitment, team work, patience, perseverance, and good sportsmanship-lessons that will have practical value and application in future life situations. In portraying our memories of student life this past year, the Sunrise staff has tried to emphasize the theme that our past knowledge has direct application to future experience. So it is that the 1978 edition of the Sunrise is an indicator of our commitment to the future and all of its experiences. Administration And Faculty , J as 1, 951 H' va, 4 East High School Principal Viola E. Andrews Principal of East High School To the Class of 1978: All of us hope to grow as individuals, and East High School was one of the vehicles for that growth. We hope that the relationships you shared with your teachers, your classmates, and the underclassmen helped you develop a taste for life and offered a pleasant moment in time. May you welcome and enjoy every moment of every day! Sincerely, Viola E. Andrews, Principal Assistant Principals John R. Martine Rupert J. Stadtmiller Assistant Principal Assistant Principal Rupert J. Stadtmiller, Assistant Principalg Viola E. Andrews, Principalg John R. Martine Assistant Principal. A11 Dedication Characterized by a deep commitment to serving and helping others, this faculty member for the past eighteen years has demonstrated the true meaning of the spirit of East High School. A graduate of Villa Maria College, she has taught students in grades seven through twelve. She has shared her expertise in the areas of general science, health and safety, earth and space science, science survey, and biology. For several years she has acted as moderator for the Y-Teens Club on the junior and senior high levels and has twice been recognized as the most outstanding Y-Teen adviser in the city. Her service to the school includes participation on the Commencement Committee, the Faculty Advisory Committee, and the school district's Health Curriculum Committee. She has served as co-adviser for the Senior Class Play, the twirlers, and the Eastcapades. She is the director of the Travel Club and has chaperoned at many school functions. Rallies run smoothly as she coordinates all backstage activities. At many athletic events, such as football and girls, volleyball and basketball, she lends a hand as a ticket seller. Rarely does she miss a school function of any type. In her spare time, she reveals her creative and artistic talents through the hobby of ceramics. Perhaps the students and the staff of East High admire particularly her willingness to serve, appreciate her ability to be concerned with our problems, and enjoy her flair for making us feel that we are all extra special people. ln recognition of her constant service and warm concern for the students and staff of East High, the Sunrise staff returns a special measure of love by dedicating the 1978 Sunrise to Theresa R. In their second year under Coach Jerry Mifsud the varsity football team finished a very good 6-3 campaign, giving the East High Warriors their first winning season in seven years. Two losses by a combined total of four points could have pushed the won-lost record to 8-1. Leading all Metro teams in offense with a 26.4 per game average and only yielding 10-2 points on defense was the key to the highly successful season. Tony Lee and Terry Carson combined for 104 points or 52 each to lead all scorers and to place second and third in Metro scoring. Al Murawski completed 52 of 89 attempts for an outstanding 52.89 completion rate. Al Barnett gathered in 23 grabs for 326 yards and 4 touchdowns for a 14.17 yards per grab average which made him a unanimous first team, All-Metro league selection. The excellent line was led by tackles Steve Allen, Pat Hatt, Jeff Anderson, John Biletnikoff, by center Bob Chylinski, by guards Bill Baginski, John Popoff, and Pat Murzynski, and by defense ends Henry Miller and Al Barnett. Terry Carson led a trio of Earl Dawson and Andy Dawson at the linebacker position. Terry received first team, All-Metro honors on defense with Earl Dawson selected for honorable mention. The 1977 edition of the East High Warriors J.V. Football team was short on numbers but long in spirit and desire. Though ending the season with a 1-7-1 record, there were many bright spots throughout the season to show that East High football is on the way up. Led by Nick Anderson, Scott Martin, Gilbert Marsh and Henry Baskin, the offense showed positive signs throughout the season. Defensive standouts included Terry Whipple, James Sherrod, Keith Latzo, Richard Gaines and Steve Chylinski. A rich nucleus of experienced players will return next year, and with an equal turnout of freshman ballplayers, a competitive unit that East High can be proud of will grace our halls again. Most members of last year's team will be returning. This makes for a promising year on the cinder paths. Returning veterans like Joe Bargielski, Alan Barnett, Tony Lee, Perry Keys, and Cross Country standout Esset Tate would make any coach happy. Although there were some good athletes graduated from last year's team, we are hoping for a fine turnout and expecting some good prospects to show up and compensate for our losses. East's record for last year was a scant 2-6, but it was an improvement over the previous season. Let's hope the 'new East High School and spirit will become a tradition for years to come. This year's team, losing only three senior starters, has as its goal the bringing of the Metro Crown to East High. The team will be led by seniors Bill Schweitzer, Mark Oldach, Brian Roth, Dale Lewis, Al Murawski, and Jim Eller. The 1977 Cross-Country season was a success, since Coach Filipowski has found some good runners and competi- tors in the school. Junior Essie Tate led all runners with seven first-place finishes in twelve meets. He placed eighth in the sectional meet, eighteenth in the district meet, and seventeenth in the Gannon Invitational Tournament. He broke the school record of 17:27 with a 16:26 time over a 3-mile course. He also garnered All-City Team honors. Perry Keys, the team's number two man, placed in the top five in nine of twelve meets. Perry is a top prospect for the next two years. Seniors Dale Lewis and Donny Keys were both hobbled by injuries, but managed to be the team's third and fourth runners. Sophomore Larry White was a late addition to the team, but developed into the most improved runner. Seniors Jim Barth, Brian Roth, and Mark Oldach will be missed for their competitive spirit and the example they set for the younger runners. Juniors Jeff LaR0ck, Bob Bish, and Roger Wettekin, along with freshmen Alan Lewis and Ken LaRock, will form a solid foundation for a winning team next year. Girls' Cross-Countr K. Schwenk, B. Kathy Schwenk, Barb Baskin and Carolyn Buckel placed fourth, seventh, and tenth respectively, as well as ninth, eleventh, and tenth in the District meet. Because of lack of participants, the team was unable to defeat larger teams, such as Tech Memorial and Villa Maria. When matched against teams with comparably sized squads, such as Iroquois and McDowell, the East High team was victorious. Kathy Schwenk should be recognized as the most outstanding individual with several second and third place finishes to her credit. Next season should be even better with an increase in participants. They lost to Tech 14-10 in their final match and in the process saw their 18 game winning streak come to a halt. Jill Kwitowski was the Erie area's most outstanding high school golfer this year. She placed third in the District 10 and fortieth in the state finals at Carlisle, Pa. Pam Curtis received her third letter and was an outstanding, consistent performer. Pam and Jill and first-year performers Alicia Brodziak and Cathy Walczak are seniors and will leave some tough golf shoes to fill. The Spirit Cf East High In Action ii Friends Cf East High School Vi vt Joseph V. Gdaniec In his position as principal of Wayne Middle School, Joseph Gdaniec functions as an important link for the middle school students who later enter East High School. Mr. Gdaniec has had a wide range of educational experience that includes seventeen years as a teacher at Gridley Junior High and at Strong Vincent, as a director of business administration and as coordinator of natural sciences and academic affairs. He was also supervisor of the federal mathematics program, was chairman of the middle school educational program, and served on the school district renovation program. He received his degree in mathematics from Gannon College, his master's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh, and pursued advanced studies at various universities. We at East High are most appreciative of his administrative efforts and academic interest in preparing future members to attend our school. . 'ln John J, Kola Retiring this June after more than thirty years in the teaching profession is John J. Kola, teacher of bookkeeping and head of the business department of East High School. Before joining the East High faculty ten years ago, he had taught social studies, health, physical education, and biological science at Millcreek Junior-Senior High and at Westlake Junior High. A graduate of Findlay College with a master's degree from Penn State, Mr. Kola is a member of the supervisory committee of the Erie School Employees Credit Union, in addition to being an avid carpenter and bowler. The students and faculty of East High School extend sincere wishes to him for a most happy and productive retirement. 1977 East High Booster Officers: Row 1: John Wilkins, Nick Ivic, Ed Zukowski,Joe Peters, Bob Carlson, Wiertel, John Buszek, John Simon, President Joseph Bob Slscni Absent Attorney Angeln Ardnlnlv J'-,nn Wiertel, Paul Prizinsky, Bill Strike: Row 2: John SatYShUl',L90 Kamimki- Underclassmen gf gn 5513 1 iii 1 105 iii ' .W .
