As the autumn days mellowed, we felt the warmth of new experiences and new friends. Together we found other friends in our teachers with whom we shared worthwhile activities. We learned to appreciate the creativity of music and art, the formation of values in English classes, the wondrous intricacies of nature in the sciences, the practical aspects of economics, the skills required to make a dress, cook a meal, build a table, type a letter or draft a plan of a building. As our friends, our teachers shared their time and learning and gave us the gift of seeking to expand our knowledge of the how and why of things. As members of organizations we strengthened our friendships through the service of our time and talents. We participated in bake sales and candy apple sales. We raised money for toys and food for needy children. We supported team spirit as members of the band, twirlers, the cheerleaders. We participated in a scale model of world affairs through the Model U.N. and learned about foreign countries and their customs through language clubs. In many other ways we learned to give in friendship. As friends and teammates we struggled long hours to arrive at victory. Together we experienced the exultation of victory and the exasperation of defeat. We learned the meaning of school spirit when the enthusiasm of 7200 friends rallied us to victory. Then we knew what friendship at East High meant. Together as seniors we shared the memories of P.O.D. classes, rallies, elections. Senior Class projects, music concerts, Eastcapades, name cards, yearbooks, the joy and excitement of our banquet and prom. Then one june evening we shared that final memory of friendship as we graduated from East High School... TOGETHER AS FRIENDS. 3 a JOHN W. PEPLINSKI Dedication Using the bridge of communication arts, this teacher has developed a teaching style in which a friendly teacher-pupil relationship exists. An East High graduate, he received his bachelor's degree from Gannon College and his master's degree in English from Case Western Reserve University. Before joining the faculty at East in 1950, he taught briefly at Roosevelt and Memorial Junior High Schools. As a teacher of communication arts, he has worked with senior high students, including those in the honors and advanced placement classes. In addition he has acted as a cooperating teacher for several student teachers from Alliance and Gannon Colleges. For the past four years he has been chairman of the English Department and is in charge of the Book Room. He has served on the English curriculum revision committee in addition to such school committees as the Commencement, the banquet, the school ring, and the National Honor Society committees. He is a gallon donor to the Community Blood Bank and among his many interests is the outdoors, especially camping and aquatic life. In recognition of his creative, individual approach to the teaching of the communication arts for the past twenty-five years, the Sunrise Staff gratefully dedicates the 1974 edition of the Sunrise to John W. Peplinski. East High School Principal Viola E. Adversities, such as a small turnout and a late start, were overcome due to the exceptional job done by Coach Cuzzola and his able staff, composed of Tom Corapi, Bob Kwiatkowski, Lee Larsen, Ed Brzezinski and Tom Matusiak. Opening losses to two strong teams from downstate marred the debut of the revitalized Warriors. However, they wasted no time in getting back on the winning track as they sandwiched two decisive victories around a loss to assert themselves as definite title contenders. A heartbreaking tie, though, eliminated East and dispelled illusions of a Cinderella season. The core of the East High offense was the running game, for the slashing speed of Nelson Young perfectly complemented the inside power of Dana Gibbs. When the aerial efforts of quarterbacks Gary Satyshur and Pete Karuba found their targets in the hands of Pat Davis and Richard Torain, they combined to make the offensive attack nothing short of unstoppable. Melvin Darby, at middle linebacker, was the mainstay of the defensive unit. Two juniors, Kevin Karuba and Ted Rainesalo round out a formidable linebacking corps. Up front, the ferocious foursome of Dan Truitt, Dave Cutter, Bob Dixon, and Joe Lomax turned many sterling performances and halted many opposing drives with their aggressive play. Valuable regulars Jeff Honard, Bob Flak, and Bill Graves were also instrumental in aiding the Warrior cause. 53 ROW 7. R. Torain, D. Cutter, D. Sienecki, A. Gavin, G. Satyshur, D. Gibbs, J. Lomax, M. The lone win came against McDowell when the team scored a 6-0 victory. The junior program was primarily designed to develop talent for future varsity competition. For many of the players, it was their first time playing organized football which made the whole season a learning process. It cannot be said that the things that were learned and accomplished were a waste. Sophomore Renley Tate, exhibiting great drive and enthusiasm, sparked the team to united effort. Errol Hilinski, though injured much of the year, performed strongly in all of the games in which he played. Lineman Larry Smith's determined efforts were consistent and freshman Pat Sorek displayed much potential. The team exhibited a lot of pride and willingness to learn and these factors should be enough to produce a winning team next year. The 1973 Flag Football season began in late September and lasted until late October. Opening the season with two straight losses to Cridley and Memorial, our young Warriors fought hard and won two of their three remaining games. Though being a newly-instituted sport with a new coach, our Warriors ended the season with a 2-3-0 slate. Our coach, Mr. P. Koval, produced eight lettermen: two freshmen and six underclassmen. Joseph Kalinowski, David Wykoff, and Cordon Marsh established themselves as team leaders with their hard work and athletic abilities. The season started slowly and gradually fizzled out altogether as our harriers absorbed defeat in every encounter. They readjusted their goals and learned to find pleasure in the pure physical joy of running. Dave McFeely regularly led the Warrior contingent with Tim Becker never far behind. Bob Waruszewski and Thad Nitkiewicz also ran well in their first year of competition. The win over McDowell was the first in over a decade. Leading the team during the 1973 season was senior captain Ray Perry. Others playing major roles were Dave Pomorski, the only junior on the team and Ray Ananea. The fourth, fifth, and sixth men came up with some big points at crucial times. They are seniors Tim Lewis, Harry Gauriloff, and newcomer Larry Oldach. Baseball The 1973 Warrior baseball team hosted a successful year. As a result of the enthusiastically played season, the Warriors placed third in their regular season games. Numerous players, more than ever before, advanced to All-City and the team also finished third in the Darby Mannix Playoffs. The upcoming 1974 baseball team will showcase a host of veteran players. Displaying speed, defensive powers and strong hitting, this edition of the Warriors cannot be counted out as the potential champions in City Series play. With increased concentration on fundamentals, further development of team pride and spirit, and a little luck, the baseball Warriors should be one of the best East High has ever produced. Although East plays most of their games against large class A schools, our school is well below the limits of class B status. The lack of student enrollment is reflected in the small number of boys who participated and completed the basketball season. There were several highlights that befell the Warriors, a team with the tallest man listed at 61 . The first came at Oil City where we annexed the first annual Venango Christian Holiday tournament. The second was our crushing of a good McDowell team, and finally our gallant bid to upset undefeated Academy, a game lost late in the fourth quarter. The team record is 11 wins and 10 losses. Coach Metzgar also surpassed the most career victories by a basketball coach in the 53 seasons of interscholastic competition with 163 wins. Dana Gibbs, team captain, was the best and most consistent of the senior players. He will receive many post season honors. John Booker and Aaron Simpson both showed periods of brilliant play but lacked consistency. They are both good young men and their dedication to basketball will be missed next season. Bruce Demyanovich was a senior reserve who was hot or cold and never really lived up to his potential. Tim Watson heads the returnees for next years squad. Tim has potential to be one of the best in town, M. V. P. Christmas tournament, but he must learn to be serious about the game and develop true leadership. Guards Pat Davis and Frank House could be among the best, but both must work on improving their ball handling and eliminating turn overs. Gary Satyshur, a reserve utility man, must improve his speed and shooting ability. Looking toward next season we must find a little size. It is quite possible that the proposed school reorganization will result in moving a few big players to our district. East Opponent 74 Ft. Being without the big man the little Warriors had to rely on speed and offensive powers to keep in every game this year. Danny Brown led the offensive attack scoring 414 points and averaging 23 points per game. Both of these points totals broke the ten-year record for a junior varsity player. Renley Tate, small in stature, made up for his lack of height with his all out hustle on offense and defense. Bill Gausman and Ben Clement became the team's leading rebounders off the offensive and defensive boards. Jimmy Johnson playing his first year of organized basketball came on strong offensively and defensively toward the end of the season. Steve Murowski, Joe Kweder, Joe Shallenburger, Fred Pope and John Jones completed the roster of this year's team. Junior High Girls' Softball The Girls7 Track season found the numerous competitors from East High placing first in various events. Madeline Filippo consistently clinched first place in shot put and made it to the city track meet winning the javeline event and again the shot put. The mile relay team consisting of Tess Crotty, Rita Skidmore, Barb Smith, and Anne Wisniewski reached first place in two of the three meets. The 440 relay teams, made up of Pat Woodard, Sharon Purdue, Kathy Keys, Framkie Woodard and Pat Hamilton, pulled a first place in the competition against both Academy and Vincent. These were other events which the East girls managed to place at the top with Tess Crot-tv in the mile run, Sharon Purdue in the high jump, Anne Wisniewski in the long jump, and Sue Ciccariello in the 880 event. 78 ROW 1: S. Senior High Girls' Basketball The Girls' Senior High basketball team opened its season in December of 1973 against Mercy-hurst. This year, for the first time, the eirls played games botn at home and away— including two at Gannon. However, because of numerous injuries, the team was plagued with little luck in winning. Anne Wisniewski and Sharon Buckel were leading scorers, respectively. There was only one senior, Tess Crotty, on the team. Therefore, as far as experienced players, the team should be set for next season. Others, beside the actual players, deserve credit. Time keeper Lori Biletnikoff, scorer Sue Orloff, and manager Cheryl Ford also played an important part in keeping the team functioning efficiently. BOTTOM TO TOP: D. Celline, T. Crotty, S. Although the team had practically no experience at the beginning of this year, through hours of dedicated practice they finished with a respectable 5-5 record. Leading scorers for this developing team were Jane Konieczko with 100 points and Cheryl Ford clinching 92 points. Voted best defensive player was Captain Sue Orloff and most improved was Sue Culver. The squad defeated Vincent and Mur-cyhurst by scores of 15-7, 15-10 and 3-15, 15-7, 16-4. The highlight of the season, however, came when the team, after losing the first game by a score of 2-15, came back to defeat Villa 3-15, 15-8, 15-3. The first team, coached by Miss B. Hornak, usually consisted of juniors Darlene, Celline, Madeline Filippo, Vicky Liebel and Mary Waters. Sophomore starters were Sharon Bucket and Lynn Anderson. Providing strength from the bench were Nancy Wagner, Connie Daniels, Raechelle Pope, Polly Carr, Frankie Woodard, Patty Woodard, Sue Ciccariello, Darlene Lubak, Marilyn Simmons, Chestine Corder, Rita Skidmore and Colleen Kenny. A very experienced and talented team is expected for next season, since all starters and a few good players from the junior high team will be back. The junior high volleyball team is also coached by Miss B. Hornak. The girls had a five-game season this year, playing Roosevelt, Memorial, Wilson, Middle School, and Gridley. Starting players were Cheryl Ford, jane Konieczko, Debby Ulmer, Brenda Glover, Lynn Richards, and Cheryl Bobkoch. Substituting were Barb Jones, Debby Farabaugh, Kim Conners, Jenny Sonney, Cheryl Loiaciano and Linda Presley. Nancy Wagner proved to be in- si valuable as the team's manager. ROW 1: Miss A. In early November the group teamed together to help make the annual ice cream social a huge success by providing all the cakes needed for the affair. But most importantly at Christmas time the council, under the direction of Mrs. Mary Duncan, with the overflowing generosity of the East High student body, assisted many needy families living in the central city area. A total of 275 items of canned and packaged food plus $106.00 were used to make Christmas a happy day for many needy shutins, elderly people and large families residing in that area. A portion of the gift was used to fill one hundred Christmas baskets with fresh meat, canned goods, and other staples. The remainder was used to provide basic essentials, as well as blankets, shoes, and clothing for school children. In addition the council provided the Christmas tree with decorations used at the Christmas assembly. Homerooms 216 and 6 captured winning honors in the annual council-sponsored door decorating contest. Among the council's anticipated projects are the purchase of a new school flag, as well as an artificial Christmas tree for use during the holiday season. ROW 1: P. Carr, Secretary; C. Juniors possessing a 3.5 grade average and seniors with a 3.0 grade average are eligible for membership. After the students applied for membership, their qualities of leadership, service, and character were voted on by the faculty. Fifteen new members from the Junior Class and twenty-one new members from the Senior Class were inducted at a special evening ceremony which was followed by a reception in the main hall. Guest speaker for the April 2,1974 induction service was Dr. Robert La Penna, Superintendent of the School District of the City of Erie. DAR Senior Girl Award The D.A.R. Award, sponsored annually by the Presque Isle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was presented this year to senior Nancy Wagner of homeroom 120. The award is based upon the qualities of dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism exemplified by a deserving senior girl. The candidates were first nominated by the students of the Senior Class, and the final selection was determined by a vote of the faculty and administration. Usually the final choice is difficult to make, since more than one girl is deemed worthy of the honor. This time Paulette Gotham of homeroom 120 and Janet Miller of homeroom 215 achieved runner-up status when they tied for second place on the ballots. As a recipient of the award, Nancy was eligible to take a qualifying test for a scholarship to Edin-boro College which she will attend in September. Garter And Suspender Award This year marked the thirtieth anniversary of the traditional handling down of the Garter and Suspender Award at East High School. Alumni Lynn Bucklin and Mike Speros presented this year's award to seniors Karen Gennuso and Jeffrey Honard. Character, appearance, honesty, leadership, and personality are necessary qualifications in order to receive this award. The class of 1974 extends congratulations and good luck to Karen and Jeff. 105 Library Aides ROW 1: L. Magee, C. Williams; ROW 2: K. Bretz, C. Prylinski, J. Szymanski, R. VanDervoort. Adams, H. Massing At the end of the 1973 school year, a respected and admired chemistry teacher at East, Mr. Harry E. Massing, retired from his teaching career. A graduate of Meadville High School, Mr. Massing received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Allegheny College and did postgraduate work at Cannon College, Edinboro State College, and the University of Pittsburgh. For six years, he taught at Harborcreek High School before coming to East High in 1947. For the past 26 years he has conscientiously taught the chemistry classes and has shown a sincere, friendly interest in each of his students. For several years he was faculty manager for the football team and in 1957 the Sunrise annual was dedicated to him. Mr. Massing enjoys the outdoors and lists hunting, fishing, and traveling among his favorite forms of recreation. The faculty, administration, and student body of East High wish this dedicated teacher a very enjoyable and productive future. Charles J. Michalski At the end of this school year, Mr. Charles Michalski, the present coordinator of Humanities for the School District of the City of Erie, will retire. A 1926 graduate of East High, Mr. Michalski received his Bachelor of Science Degree in education from Edinboro State College and obtained his Master's Degree in speech and linguistics from the University of Michigan. As a teacher at East for 14 years, he taught speech, English, and Spanish, in addition to directing over 30 long and short plays and coaching the debating team for numerous years. In recognition of his talents as a teacher, the 1938 edition of the Sunrise was dedicated to him. As a representative of the State Department and the U. S. Office of Education, Mr. Michalski served as a specialist in the teaching of English, and as a consultant of the Ministry of Education in Peru, Chile, and Indonesia. Mr. Michalski authored the three levels of the textbook Spanish: An Oral Approach. To Charles Michalski who has been an ambassador of friendship to foreign countries, a respected teacher, and a progressive coordinator, we extend heartfelt gratitude and sincere wishes for an enjoyable future.
