The Sunrise staff has attempted to present in pictures the personnel of the entire school, both individually and in groups. We have tried to narrate all the events and activities of interest during the past year. We are proud that last year's Sunrise won second group rating in the state. If conscientious effort and strict attention to the failings of that book pay dividends, this year's annual should be even better. We have spared little expense to have an outstanding cover, high quality paper, and the best in engraving and printing. It is hard for those not connected with the yearbook to realize the planning and work involved in its production. The compensation the staff members receive is the pleasure and satisfaction of a task well done. In future years we feel sure the vision of past events and old friends will be brighter and clearer because of our efforts. We trust you will always find joy, pleasure, and a wealth of pleasant memories as you peruse its pages. (Z-J AST HIGH E C rie, f ennSuiuania With sincere affection and high regard the class of 1949 dedicates this Sunrise to Miss Florence Stoltz and Miss Bernadine Chessley. The smooth, efficient operation of the office with its myriads of forms, statistics, and details is due to their watchfulness, ability and untiring work. Miss Stoltz has seen every class come and go since our school was built. Her overall knowledge of every phase of school operation is priceless to the administration. The efficiency and dispatch with which each detail is handled amazes us all. She is friendly, courteous and calm. We have never seen her angry or heard her speak a harsh word. The smoothness with which our school is run is largely dependent upon her efforts. Miss Chessley, the assistant clerk, is the soul of efficiency and cooperation. Her guiet, courteous manner and willingness to help will long be remembered by the students and teachers. She has very capably taken over the responsibility of advisor for the Cheerleaders and the Eleventh Grade M Club. She has well earned our great respect and high regard. We choose this way to reward them, in some part, for their many services, and we look forward to having them with us for a long time. Administration ..... 6 Seniors .12 Organizations ...... 36 Music ........ 50 Athletics ....... 60 Underclassmen ...... 76 HAROLD D. LEBERMAN Mr. Leberman has proven to be one of our best friends, from seventh grade up to the Senior year. At the beginning of first period he can be seen standing in front of the office with a friendly smile on his pleasant face. He is interested in our problems, no matter how trivial, and is always willing to give a little helpful information. We at East High, are fortunate in having such a pleasant personality at the head of our school. Some days he appears a little tired but never too tired to inguire about our studies and activities. The fact that he has been at East for only three years, has not prevented his becoming acquainted with the names of the students. We all admire him for placing our good points in front of our shortcomings. n o The position of assistant principal requires rare tact, unusual fairness, and calm judgment. It calls for the patience of Job and the insight of a psychologist. Years of training and experience have given Miss Gerboth and Mr. MacDonald their full quota of these qualities. Daily we hear instances where they have used them wisely in the guiding and directing of some boy or girl. We are proud to have these two, who have risen from the ranks of teachers, as our assistant principals. But now we are to leave our school years behind us to embark on the real tasks of life. However, we will never be able to forget the many joys of our days at East. For who could forget the hustle bustle connected with graduation, planning schedules, electing class officers and ordering cards and announcements. In future years we will always remember the impressive Honor Society induction, the lovely banguet, and the gay class day. Now we must say good-bye to these happy days and turn to a new and greater work. It provides a diversion from the monotony of every day studies. But the most deserving accomplishment of these clubs is the training of the future leaders of our community. The people who hold offices in these organizations are instructed in the art of leading capably and impartially, while the other members learn to follow, assist and support their leadership. It takes conscientious members as well as capable leaders to operate a successful organization, no matter how large or small in magnitude. Character training is aguired by participating in the various activities that organizations offer, as well as the ability to get along with people. The contributions which organizations give to the school cannot be over estimated. Governing bodies like the Cabinet and Home Room Council give students the opportunity to participate in school government, while active organizations like Cheerleaders and Twirlers, build the morale and enhance the support of our athletic contests. The service clubs, M Clubs and Hi-Y, tend to build the characters of their members through spiritual and vocational guidance. Students with writing or creative abilities have a chance to use and develop these by serving on the Sunrise or Tom Tom Staffs. However the dances, auditorium programs, plays and skits, put on by these organizations seem to be appreciated more than any other contribution by the students of the school. There is some important event going on at all times for their enjoyment and entertainment. Our school life would not seem complete without these organizations and as we follow the path of life we can always look back and remember not only the lessond we learned but also the fun we had in the good old days. 1st Row: G. One member from each home room serves on this council which was instituted two years ago. This council collects money from the students in their respective home rooms during the various charitable drives. They also serve as a means of communication between the Student Cabinet and the pupils of the school. The Student Cabinet, the student governing body of the school, consists of two representatives from each grade and one from the Tom Tom, Sunrise and Honor Society. The supervision of noon time dances and the choosing of auditorium programs are some of the projects undertaken by the Cabinet. However, the highlight of the cabinet's year is the staging of the sensational Eastcapades. 1st Row: K. Montgomery, M. Flengas, J. Parker, P. Casey, B. Wells, S. Walker, J. Daniels. 2nd Row: L. V The College Club was organized for girls interested in furthering their education. Miss Parker's room, which has a very pleasant atmosphere, is the meeting place for the club. During the past year guests were invited to speak to the girls about various colleges and professions. Among the speakers were Mrs. Shute from Lake Erie College, Mrs. Leach from Wilson College and Mrs. McCarthy from the Erie College Club. Several East High Alumni were also invited. These speakers have helped many girls to find a college suitable to their needs. The College Club this year is under the supervision of Miss Carlson who is always willing to give help in any way she can. President..... Vice President Secretary..... Treasurer..... The main purpose of The Masquers is to develop the dramatic ability of its members. Instruction in the art of making-up, arranging the stage and costuming is also received. In order to be selected for the club, one must be in senior high and show his ability through a tryout. The members then vote on the prospective Masquer and if thought satisfactory is admitted to the club. The Tom Tom staff acquires desirable journalistic qualities in the process of turning out our excellent school paper. Few people realize the tedious task required to put out the Tom Tom. Copy must be written, headlines selected and pictures taken. Through initiative and clever ideas, the staff not only met these responsibilities with diligence, but also thought up different and enjoyable features to add to the brightness of the paper. They realize their efforts are not wasted when they see the interest and the enjoyment on the faces of the students who are reading the paper they worked so hard to complete. From seventh grade up to twelfth, nearly every student has had some musical experience. The younger students in Junior High express themselves by lusty singing in their music classes. As we progress to Senior High, we find many other organizations, both vocal and instrumental, in which we are able to develop our particular interests. We learn to appreciate, and listen to all types of music. There are several concerts each year, which are given by both the vocal and instrumental groups. Each individual feels a personal satisfaction, when he sees how team work and cooperation can produce a performance which is highly successful and entertaining. The school spirit is roused to its fullest by the inspiring music played at rallies during football season. Many of our other assembly programs have a background of appropriate music. Everyone loves music, and we'll all find it hard to forget the musical memories of our school, for music surely hath charms. u 1st Row: E. Guth, C. Griesbaum, R. Airgocd, B. Huegel, L. Rectenwald, M. Mr. Leemhuis, who spent the summer at the Christiansen Choral School, has benefited by securing the knowledge of many of their vocal theories. Conseguently, the Choir has greatly improved in style and technique. Included in the Choir's program were engagements at two of the Erie grade schools, Edison and Harding. They also sang for the Christmas Seal Broadcasts over the-new radio station WIKK. The annual A Cappella Choir Concert was enjoyed by everyone. The formality and beauty of the program was indeed something of which to be proud. According to the tradition, the old alumni were invited to sing with the Choir their theme song, Now the Day is Over. 52 1st Row: A. Liocano, J. Schroeder, D. Butler, D. The Glee Club offers voice training to all boys who are interested in singing four-part harmony. This experience enables some of them to become eligible for membership in the Choir when they reach tenth grade. Also, they learn to appreciate not only the secular type of song, but other types as well. Each year they take part in a program which includes Boys' Glee Clubs from the other high schools of the city. The boys in the Glee Club feel that Mr. Leemhuis is their friend, as well as their director. The class has a friendly atmosphere, and the boys enjoy good fellowship while they are learning songs. In the Senior Chorus, girls are able to further their musical education. Not only do they learn many more of the fundamentals of good singing, but also they learn breath control, proper intonation, how to blend well with the group, and how to sight read. All these things help to help to form a good choral group. During the school year, the girls sometimes make appearances on the assembly programs. The wide variety of selections which they offer each year at the Choral Concerts, is always pleasing to the large audience of music lovers who attend. To girls who are musically inclined, the Junior Chorus offers good, basic voice training, under the instruction of Mr. Robert Leemhuis. This training paves the way to participation in either the Senior Girls' Chorus, or the A Cappella Choir, when they reach senior high school. During the Yuletide Season, the girls sang for the Christmas Seal Broadcasts around the gaily decorated tree at Perry Sguare. Their program given at the Girls' Chorus Festival was greatly enjoyed by everyone who attended. This was due to the tremendous amount of effort the girls put into their work before the concert. The East High marching band is one of the finest in the city. It is made up of both the concert and the marching bands. In their vivid behold as they march down the field in uniforms of scarlet and grey, the boys are something to the Stadium. The acts they put on during the half are always enjoyable. Most of the time they are assisted by the Twirlers, and the excellent co-operation between the two groups is shown by the performance. During the year, the Band, under the direction of Mr. W. Under the most able instruction of Mr. William Burger, these girls do work each year that is very creditable to the school. Their appearances at the half during football season is always an added attraction, which the people look forward to. Their numbers are very snappy, and with the Twirlers helpirg out at times, the acts are guite pleasing to the spectators. This is due to the many hours they spend on the field, practising. Many of them have developed into truly fine artists. 58 The Orchestra is under the most able leadership of Mr. William Burger. They meet five days a week, and the classes are conducted in such a fashion that the boys and girls are able to enjoy the music while they are learning it. The Orchestra made an appearance at Wilson during the year, which was highly successful. The numbers they played consisted of comical as well as serious songs. The Junior Band is for those who have had a little previous training in playing instruments. For those who have had no instruction at all, there is the Junior Training Band. Under Mr. Burger's direction, boys and girls from both of these organizations will, in the future, make fine members for the Band and Orchestra. Under the able instruction of the noted Erie violinist, Mr. Paul Cleveland, young boys and girls receive their basic training in playing string instruments. Most of them have had no previous experience at all, but with Mr. Cleveland's patience and kindness, they make excellent progress. There are two classes, one for violins, and the other for cellos and bass viols. Intramural volleyball and basketball are enjoyed by every home room. To supplement this, the physical education department offers afternoon and evening instruction in swimming, tennis, track, tumbling, boxing, archery, gymnastics and games. Training is provided for the younger boys with visions of varsity performance. This is given in cub football and Junior High basketball. The next rung in the ladder of athletic success is the chance to play on the junior varsity football and basketball teams. These activities, together with a well rounded gym program, are the springboard to rugged varsity competition under expert coaching. Varsity letters are awarded in football, cross country, swimming, water polo, basketball, wrestling, track, golf, tennis, and baseball. ME SOM 1st Row: C. Mielewski, H. Oldach, B. Wlodarczyk, M. The Warriors dropped their opening contest to a highly favored New Castle eleven 39 to 0. Vincent, their next foe, seemed to be too much for the Detzelmen as the Colonels rolled over them to the tune of 41 to 12. The teepee men didn't show any signs of power until they met up with the Trojans from Millcreek as they took them by a slight trim of 16 to 13. The Warriors couldn't find the range on any of the other teams except Barberton, a foreign team that tried to invade the Scarlet and Gray here at the stadium. Despite the poor season our Capt., Tom Stanton, won the honor of being named the most valuable player for 1948. He, also, with his teammate, Matt Wisniewski, made the city all scholastic team. One of the greatest upsets of the season was the defeat of the Academy Lions by the little warriors 12 to 0. One of the most outstanding performances was by Dick Pletz, who intercepted a Vincent pass and raced 40 yards to the one yard line, where East scored a touchdown to beat the Colonels 12 to 18. The hoopsters with a season record of eight wins and eight losses showed much promise. The players moving up to the varsity will prove to be a great asset. The East High swimming team with five wins and three losses finished the 1949 season tied with Academy for second place in city series competition. The Highlight of the season was their 42 to 33 victory, inflicted on highly respected Academy. The team improved as the season went on. They were beaten decisively by Vincent at the beginning of the campaign. Then, in their second meeting near the completion of the season, they came closer to beating Vincent than any other team, the meet being decided by the last event. Another indication of their improvement was their capturing of second place in District ten competition. The closest any team came to beating the Warriors was Academy in the first game of the season, five to four. The East High splashers stacked up 61 points to their opponents 23. The Warrior's captain, Dick Petersen, took the city series scoring race with a total of 25 points. He was chosen on the all star water polo team with Tom Gorbatoff, an outstanding forward, who came up with points, when they were most needed. Bob Bowen, first string forward was regarded as one of the best all around players in the city. Also contributing to the success of the team was the excellent guarding ability of Alex Barlekoff and Dave Bugenhagen and the alert goal-tending of goalie, Ralph Hatch. The East High wrestling sguad finished an excellent season with six wins and two losses, taking second place in the city series race. The team was led by Captain Bill Reese, who wrestled in the 165 pound class. Both Reese and Dick Patternitti took city championships. The only two meets the team dropped were to Academy, the city champions. One of of the greatest upsets of the season was the Warriors first victory over the Vincent Colonels. The 1948-1949 wrestling sguad, coached by Duke Detzel, had the most successful season in the history of wrestling at East High. The beginning of the season found the East High batmen off to a slow start as they dropped the first two contests to Vincent 7 to 1 and Academy 9 to 6. The Warriors found themselves in a tough struggle with Prep as they came on top to the tune of 8 to 5. Academy, their next foe, overpowered the scarlet and grey and handed the Warriors their first shutout 13 to 0. East High found glory when they took over the Colonels from Vincent 4 to 0. The tennis team finished the season with a record of one win, three losses, and one tie. The victory was scored over Lawrence Park and the tie was with Tech. The returning letterman for the next season is Larry Sample with the other three letterman graduating. All indications point to the fact that there must be a revival of interest in tennis if East is to make a creditable showing in that sport. East High School's golf team ended the season with a record of two wins and eight losses. The two wins were scored over Tech with Matt Pommer leading the way. The team loses the following via graduation; Matt Pommer, Carl Pommer, and Ed Westerling. Dave Bugenhagen will be the only returning letterman to lead the sguad next year. 1st Row: D. Nievinny. V. By eighth grade we had acguired a little polish and by the time we became ninth graders we were undisputed leaders of junior high. In the tenth grade we were at last senior high students enjoying all senior high activities. With the ending of eleventh grade we are worrying about seguences and credits with thoughts of graduation becoming all important. Our many happy memories will include ”M Club initiations which afforded the students a great deal of amusement. The girls with their pajamas and plaid shirts, cold cream and make-up, pin curls, and braided hair, drinking out of their baby bottles were a very odd, but exceedingly funny, sight. The winter season was highlighted by the Christmas Concert, given by the choral societies here at East, and the Band and Orchestra Concert. In the spring we had our traditional Eastcapades performed by our very own talent. With all this we will have many things to look back upon. We have had many wonderful times at the parties and dances held by the different organizations and classes. The Snowball Frolic, Sunrise Cabaret and The Farewell Dance for the Seniors, are just a few of the many we have enjoyed. We are anticipating next year with determination to do our bit for East High. By joining school activities we will be able to feel, when we leave, that we have done our part toward making East a bigger and better school. 0 0 D. Ackerly, C. Aloiz, D. Ange-lotti, M. Banaszck, L.
