H947 DEDICATION During the years that East High School has been forming her traditions, she has been serfued by four principals who have enriched our school life by their inspiration and courageous assistance. Therefore, the Class of 1047 dedicates this Sunrise to . . . C. W. MCNARY who laid a firm foundation for his successors. JOHN W. RAY 'whose' radiant personality stimulated students for eighteen years. W. EDWIN cooN f L2'll0Jf.'. sincerity encouraged high standards 0 citizenship. H. D. LEBERMAN 'who already has profved a true friend. C. W. McNary John W. Ray 1919-1921 1921-1939 346. H. D. Lebefman W. Edwin Coon 1946 -4 1939-1946 FOREWORD We, the class of I047, honored as the tfwenty-fifth June graduating class, fwish to consciously recollect the things that have made our Alma lklater great. U'ithin the epic period between the classes of 1023 and 1047, remarkable strides have been made. Our school has increased not only in enroll- ment, but also in tlze quality and quantity of the courses ofered. We are justly' proud of this progress. Other notable changes have taken place also. The sports department has developed from one baseball team into an all-inclusive year round program, and the history classes are now discussing atomic control rather than the Washington Conference. In the halls, one sees sweaters and skirts instead of the loose fitting, lofw-fwaisted frocks of yesterday. Using an hourglass as a background, 'we have tried, in developing our theme, to portray this marked contrast between the age of flappers and the age of bobby' soxers. Yet, fwe can never paint a true picture for, in spite of the difference in years, there are too many common bonds linking 10.23 with 1047. life both regard ourfflma Zllater 'with loyalty and venerationj 'we both thrilled to the strains of ZVIay the Scarlet and Grey Float o'er Us ,' and 'we both faced gradua- tion with mixed feelings--regret for tlze end of the carefree happiness of school life and anticipation for the adventure before us. To the Class of '23, fwesexpress our appreciation for the precedents which it so fwisely established. This is our heritage. Our only hope is that five can do no less. The East High foothall team finished their 1946 season with a record of three victories, one tie, and six defeats. This season was one of disaster as the Hydemen were the pre-season favorites to win the football title. The VVarriors, however, heat their arch rival, Academy, by a score of 16 to 6. The Yvarriors scored their margin of victory hy two touchdowns and a touchback. This was not the only time that the Hydemen were on the verge of scoring touch- downs for throughout the game they were consistently knocking on Academy's goal line. To pick the most outstanding players in the East-Academy game would be a difficult thing to do. In the line, were many players who played like champions hut probably the most outstanding were jim Reid and Ralph Warren, while in the hackfield was Gene Mahon, the unsung hero of this year's football team. Another outstanding game was the 13 to 6 victory over the Akron-East aggregation. In that game, Ray Grabinski played a spectacular offensive game. Our football team hegan its gridiron season with a 20 to 0 loss to the strong New Castle team. This was followed by losses to Prep, Louisville Male, Ashtabula, Tech, and Vincent. Next year's squad will consist of eleven lettermen. This will be a fine nucleus for Coach jim Hyde's 1947 gridiron machine. East has lost eight of this year's lettermen. They are our two all-scholastic linemen: Captain Charles Brasington and Leo Beill, with Bob Bender, jim Reid, Ray Grahinski, Al Swanseger, Gene Mahon, Bill Lawrence, and Steve Rovnak rounding out the lettermen. WATER POLO WATER POLO CHAMPIONS-1946 The East High Water Polo team finished their 1946 season with a record of eight wins and no losses. In winning their tenth city Water Polo title and second in succession, the East mermen defeated their arch-rival Vincent by scores of 10-2 and ll-I. Many sports' writers and coaches rate this year's team as the greatest in water polo competition. The heroes of this year's team were Pianka and Pietras whose dazzling play both on offensive and defensive were a sight to see. Everyone on the East High team finished on one of the three City All-Scholastic teams. The only boy to ever win a first place berth on the all-star team for two years was Ray Grabinski, our goalie. Prospects for next year are bright, but the loss of four seniors, co-captains George Pianka and Frank Pietras, and Tim Federoff and Ray Grabinski, will greatly affect Frank Pettinato's hid for a third straight water polo title. Their arch rivals, Academy and Strong Vincent, took first and second places, respectively, while placing honors in the District Ten contest. The team's track squad was led by Swanseger, Lawrence and Grabinski, who made excellent showings. In the Held events Matulevieh, Bechtos, Beill, and Detzel set the pace. This year was the first in which the team was under Coach George fWhiteyj Geisler, who did an excel- lent joh of building up the team. URBAN MATMNS ORGANIZATIONS-PAST AND PRESENT We, in East High now, have many more privileges than our fellow students in 1922. The former classes partici- pated in very few extra-curricular activities. One of the outstanding jobs of the students, themselves, was to plan every auditorium program. Consequently, they produced many of their much-talked-about plays. The best noted was the comedy- Miss Bob White. Today we have an organization known as the Masquers under the direction of Miss Gertrude King which puts on most of the plays for our enjoyment and, also, for the enjoyment of other schools in the city. The student cabinet now helps plan the auditorium programs, with Miss Mary McMahon as supervisor. 1 The Sunrise began as the school magazine which included news, poems, and original stories. This was changed by our own Tom-Tom under the direction of Miss Eleanor Young. The school annual continued with the Sunrise and the stall is supervised by Miss Florence Betts. The musical organizations have always been a part of the school activities. In 1922, the orchestra was under the direction of Miss Zelda Jones, composer of our school song, and the band was led by Mr. W. S. Owens. Lately, however, the instrumental organizations, including the Drum and Bugle Corps, were put under Mr. Wil- liam Burger. The choral groups were formed to sing with the plays that were presented. Now the members put on programs all over the city under the direction of Mr. Donald Ricart. The National Honor Society was recently started in East High by Mrs. Ruth Milloy in 1936. She is still the advisor, and, as of June 1946, there is a membership of 212 girls and 138 boys. The society plans hayrides, par- ties, and other similar activities. Miss Katherine Pille's aesthetic dancing classes were in the limelight in the earlier days of our school. The girls put on countless programs and they were enjoyed by all. There is nothing at present that takes the place of these classes. In 1922, the students only had two cheerleaders at pep rallies or on the field during a game. Francis Kardot was the outstanding cheerleader at that time. Mrs. Beatrice Sheviclt has taken over the cheerleaders and we now can cheer with eight active students leading us. The Girls' College Club was among the first organizations started. Miss Miriam Booth and Miss Charlotte Crowell were among the lirst originators at East. There is now a membership of 65 with Miss Alice Jose as the supervisor. Mr. W. Wynn Warren recently began a Boys' College Club and that is run on the same principles as the girls' group. Considering the few activities that our parents enjoyed, compared to ours, we can all agree that we can be very thankful to those responsible for these many enjoyments. .
