To be chosen as a member is not only an honor but an advantage. Upon numerous occasions membership has obtained for both service men and civilians, special consideration for desired positions or advancement. The qualihcation that each pupil who is inducted into the organization must have are high standards of Scholarship, Character, Service, and Leadership. Scholarship, which means an average of at least 85',lQ, makes a pupil eligible, but the other qualifications are the deciding factors. The list of eligible pupils is sent to each senior high school teacher to grade. Taken into consideration is not only the pupil's conduct in class, but also his conduct in study hall, cafeteria, auditorium, library, social functions, home rooms, and in the halls. Under each qualihcation the teacher rates the pupil as follows: five points for excellent, four for above average, three for average, two for below average, and one for poor. These marks are averf a ed together to find the total rating, which must usually be four or over to ensure membership, because only five per cent OP the elevenftwo class, ten per cent of the twelvefone class and fifteen per cent of the twelveftwo class are chosen. The final decision as to who will be admitted lies in the hands of a committee of teachers. Membership in the National Honor Society is the highest honor which the faculty can bestow on any student. ll if . The Cabinet Anvisoiz: Dr. Glatzert At the beginning of this year, the East High School Cabinet, a student representative body was formed to succeed h f S t e ormer Student Council. Its membership consists of fifteen students, two boys and two girls from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades, and one representative from the National Honor Society the Sunrise Staff d h T W g u l . 4 ' H , ' , an t e om Tom Staff. The purpose of the cabinet is to give the students a part in the administration of student activities. Regular meetings are held twice a month during guidance period, In its first year, this new organization has made itself an important part of school life It has provided a serie f - ' s o ex' cellent professional assembly programs and movies, collecting ten cents from each student to cover the cost. It sponsored the Sixth War Loan Drive with such success that we almost tripled the goal set for us raising enough to pay for an amphi- bious tank and two machine guns. Further, it assisted in producing the Eastcapades, our annual student variety show. East High is very hopeful about the future of the Cabinet and considers it a notably successful example of democracy in practice. its N TOM TOM STAFF-Left to right: Edward Czerwinski, Julia Anderson, Marjorie Cochran, John Hetman, Alfred Pietra Santa, Bernard Kubasik, Miss Young, Advisor, Leonard jankowski, Victor Tupitza, Martha Kilgore, Catherine Stahover Leona Rogers. fTom Tom Stajf Anvisonz Miss Young Thirteen members of the journalism class make up the staff of the school newspaper, the Tom Tom, which comes out monthly. This class is informal and work is intermingled with fun Students of the eleventh and tw lfth d h h . . e gra es, w o ave ambition and ability to write, are eligible to join. A few tenth grade students are allowed to join by special permission. Each memb . ..... . . . . . . er is given an assignment with a specific deadline for its completion. After the article is written, it is typed, checked, and then handed back to the writer for any necessary changes. The actual printing of the paper is the next step. Before each publication, four or five members go to the printers to page , which involves the planning and pastin u of the art' E P 1' cles on the proper pages. One student proof reads the entire paper. Staff members then distribute the papers to the home rooms and collect the money. The Staff have outside activities too They frequently visit community or anizations to t ' l f l , . g ge materia or artic es of interest or technical information. This year they visited the Humane Society and Times Publishing Company Finally, d h to en t e year, at a banquet held at the Barn in May, the Tom Tom Staff was host to all the other high school newspaper staffs in Erie. ann 1 FMS 2' I Q58 . s, 1 Q aw 'E' gg Q o Q ag, 1' 'O-ni., .A SENIQR HIGH CONCERT BAND. Eastls Stadium Shows A Last fall thousands of people thrilled to the rough and tumble performance of the various football teams in the Stadium. Most of these same people were also thrilled by the shows put on between the halves by three East High organizations. The Band, under the direction of Mr. Burger, lent much color to the scene by their playing of rousing football songs and up to the minute arrangement of ln the Mood . Their marching formations were perfected by much practice, includ' ing unprecedented sessions beginning at 7:30 in the morning. Another musical organization, the Drum and Bugle Corps, added much to the spirit of things with their stirring marches. Guided by Mr. Kellogg, the Corps has improved greatly in the last few years until it now rates as one of the best in the city. The Cheerleaders, too, deserve much credit. Headed by Mrs. Shevick, they put their wholefhearted effort into giving Erie a good show. They planned the novelties, such acts as 'iitterbug dances, Indian dances, and some widely discussed cirf cus scenes. These three org.iniz.itions provided a great amount of entertmininent to the public last hill, and in doing so they also added to the schools prestige. lfast High can well be proud of them , 'HG N :fy ' . , ,. . It's real name is Mekessenakaweaii, an Indian word meaning friendship. ' When a girl joins the M Club she automatically becomes a junior member of the Y. W. C. A. The Tri dances, which are sponsored by a joint organization composed of the officers of the four different Girl Reserve Clubs in Erie, are the main social events of the year. At these dances, which are greatly anticipated by all members, the girl may choose her own escort. Also, besides the initiation held in school each year, a formal candlelight service is held at the Y. W C. A. At this service the Girl Reserves repeat their pledge and sing their song, Follow the Gleam. qv Initiation Day nn-snags-r 3 ,J Vid' GCE CLUB 1 4. an Sw... vu .,.0- i. s 'i J Si f - .1,gi.- Tl . ,l Tn nl x RE Si ST! ff V3 'N 'Q A 9 i l QW, ,,,3 ' 'K W? ,Q 5 Sfff v in V M 5, V,,.
