These East High Boys Gave Their Lives Foo' Their Coimtfry 4 V 'A w I Nl su FQREWCRD Our high school years have been spent almost entirely during a time in which our country has been engaged in a war. We have learned to realize the privilege of receiving a democratic American education, while men and women all over the world are sac- rificing all that is most dear to them in order that future generations may continue in the way of life which is our most precious heritage. We seniors are now leaving to take a more active part in helping to preserve that heritage. We enter upon this task with seriousness and pur- pose, confident that our school has given us the foundation to meet this responsibility. Until that time of final victory, when many of the graduates of this class and other classes return from the battle fronts, we trust that you who remain behind us here at East will carry the colors of Scarlet and Gray high, and keep the traditions which we have tried to uphold. Trusting in God, we Seniors hope that by the time another annual bearing the warrior emblem and the title Sunrise is published the world will again be at peace. , is , K I 1 ff 1 N Q x 1 if , 'T N Xxx! x K 2 Y 1 11 X I 1 KX X Ui LX X X-XL , 1 f f ' X v' ..- 'Rik x Q k Arg A f lip, Eg, , ,gg ,x, X N '.gg,31' 1 1 W1 1 71 F 1115 1 1 M1 K f 1 5 . The student body has cooperated to the fullest extent in making each undertaking a success, giving wholeheartedly of both time and money. Our goals were usually not only attained but surpassed. It has been a busy year, but one in which we have found a great deal of satisfaction. Curriculum Changes With the war and its occupaf aions in mind, the courses of study at our school were adjusted to meet new conditions. The army and navy def manded more science and math. Inf dustry was short of workers with technical skills. Geography and the social studies took on new meanings, especially in the field of current events. With rationing and food shortages a problem, the Home Economics Depart' ment put renewed emphasis on nutrif tion and the proper preparation of foods. Girls, found that they could dress better in these days of high cloth' ing costs if they could learn to sew. Courses never before taught appeared, like PrefFlight Aeronautics, and Radio. The flfml' eXHm11'13t19US Showed HU East has the only Radio Class in Erie. alarming lack of physical htness among draftees, so the schools innaugurated a special physical training program. Boys' gym classes meet five days a week instead of the customary two, and include a strenuous Com' mando Training plan. Through all of these additional activities, we have held fast to the belief that the primary purpose of the high school is education, and that consistently high scholastic standards must be maintained. With all of these new demands, hm our social and athletics program was bound to suffer. Boys were in the army or working after school. For the first time, eight of the players on the Varsity Football Squad were Sophof mores. Dances were hard to plan with so few boys available, and the june Senior Prom and Banquet were com' bined into one function. But, with typical East High spirit, our students have buckled down to the task at hand, and made the most of such opportunities for good times as could be arranged. Civiliori Q ense Today the possibility of an air raid seems remote, but in the early days of the war, we did not know what to expect. So East High along with the rest of Erie, made preparations. Mr. Munz was appointed Head Air Raid Warden, with a corps of faculty and students as his assistants. First aid stations were set up and equipped in different parts of the building. A warning system of sirens and bells was worked out and frequent pracf tice drills held, until the students learned the meaning of the various signals. Then the Ere drills were added to air raid drills to prepare for that eventuality. The splendid cooperative spirit displayed by our boys and girls on these occasions made us proud . , , to belonghto East High, and sure that we were ready for what' Yvonne Hlckmanpnd George Kuzmlshm ever mfg g Come. with Arr Raid Sirens Civilian defense activities outside of school found many volunteers from East. Mr. Coon was made Senior Gas Officer of Erie County, in charge of defense against poison gas attacks. Mr. jameson became Director of Civilian Defense Schools, with several teachers assisting as instructors. Mr. jordan, in charge of Personnel and Examinations for the Wzir Emergency Radio Service trained operators in evening classes. Hundreds of both stu' dents and faculty took primary and advanced courses in First Aid. Many were donors to the Blood Bank, and hours and hours of spare time were donated to manning- the Conf trol Center, Red Cross work, American Women's Volunf teer Service, U. S. O., and Air Raid Warden duty. Miss Burger and Mr. jameson with Civilian Defense Equipment Sludenls mploqed An acute problem of a nation at war is the shortage of workers. Many high school students, we regret to say, quit school to take war jobs, much against the advice of those in authority in both school and state, since democracy cannot exist without an educated citizenry. The more farfsighted ones found that they could help in the war effort and still continue their education. Many have gone directly into war industries. Others by taking such unskilled jobs as part time clerks, waitresses, and nurse girls, have released their elders to take full time jobs in industry. We at East are proud of the determination which has enabled our students to keep up with their school work and still aid the war effort by useful employment. These statistics tell the story: Emploqmenl Slulislics Enrollment .,...............,...,......,,.. 1525 Number gainfully employed .............., . . . 441 Number working 40 hours or more per week . . ....... .... 2 '7 30 to 40 hours per week . . . . , . . .54 N N 20 to 30 N H . , , . . . 142 N 10 to 20 N N ,,.... . . . 153 less than 10 hours per week . , . . . .65 ommunilu War Fund Our quota was more than doubled this year by the addition of seventeen war agencies to the local institutions which are usually helped by the Community Chest. The drive, under the direction of Miss Burger, was generously supported, and we greatly exceeded the quota set, with a total contribution of S1,440.32. The students gave 543500, the faculty 594257, and other employees 56275. We are all very proud of the girls in Home Room 204, Miss Sisley's room. They pledged them' selves to raise 510000, and completed their payments by the end of March. Slflfflp on I3Ol'lCl SOIQS Each Tuesday at East marked the day for purchasing stamps and bonds. It was handled through the Home Room teachers and faithfully observed throughout the entire school year. Miss Gerboth was in charge, ably assisted by Miss Burger, Mr. jameson, and Mr. MacDonald. The thousands of dollars thus invested in our country's future are an impressive proof of East's good business sense, as well as its patriotism. Below are the figures. Competition between Junior and Senior high was very keen with an extra auditorium as the prize for the winners. The drive was conducted by the Tom Tom Staff under the direction of Miss Young. Mr. jameson presided at the weighing in. 39,224 pounds of scrap paper was collected, with the junior High winning by a margin of over 5,000 pounds. Eugene Cuneo, Tom Tom editor, was able to present Mr. Coon with a check for 8131.49 from the sale of the paper, the money to go toward a new and badly needed cyclorama for the auditorium. So the drive benefitted everybody. The students got inner satisfaction and exercise, the war effort got the scrap paper, and the school gets the cyclorama. ., fi 1' .4 I r M--5 'si at I A - TQ X ii 3 Amman- ,.. .- s s, 'N .... It is vital work which must go on in wartime as well as peace time. We collected 383.35 this year, with the Junior High leading. The schools have been asked to help in making inf formation available and in testing for particular abilities. The army and navy have both been anxious to find seventeen and eighteen year old boys who are qualiied for training as specialists and technicians, so once each semester college qualifying tests have been given at East to eligible seniors. Those selected study at govenment expense at colleges and universities determined by their abilities. The curricula vary in length from one to eight 12-week terms, and the trainees receive college credit for their work. The school has also been asked to keep the boys informed of the Naval Aviation Vf5 program which leads directly to a commission as Ensign in the Navy, and Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. On several occasions we have granted time to officers of both men's and women's service branches to talk to our students about available opportunities in uniform. Our library has also cooperated, with Miss Jose, librarian, arranging special displays of per' tinent materials including manuals, books, and pamphlets to keep our students informed of what it offered and what is required. We of the school, consider it a privilege to assist in so vital a work in these days of crisis. Wav Acliviiies oi the Woodwovkinq Shops The industrial arts classes, also working in cooperation with the junior Red Cross, have made many articles to aid in maintaining the morale of servicemen. Mr. jordan's classes produced 120 cribbage boards, 5 book wa ons, 20 canes, and one bed table, and provided two boys to help with the remodeling ofg the junior Red Cross Head' quarters at Eleventh and State Streets. Mr. Wagner's boys made 50 shuffle boards, 25 checker boards, and painted 200 ash trays. Ruth Fay. Eleanor Gardner, and Helen Smylqowskx, with some of the articles they helped make. Q ovlicullutae loss Mrs. Spetz's Horticulture class is equipped with a roof-garden green- house, which is the students' pride and joy. The soil is scientifically pre- pared and a wide variety of plants are raised with expert and devoted care. Now, in wartime, the class has assumed the responsibility for supplying plants and information to our victory gardeners, of whom there were one hundred and sixty seven this year. Over 4,000 plants were started at school and transplanted later to the individual gardens. The Horticulture Class is one of the few in which students beg to be allowed to come and work during extra periods. up-lime clivilies The Aft Class makes a stained glass window ewinq Classes Many a child in bombed out Europe has been made happy by a gift of one of the dolls made by our East High sewing classes. They are designed and supervised by Miss Koerber, and are of such originality and exquisite workmanship that it has been hard to convince would be purchasers who see them that they are not for sale. Miss Koerber has been honored for her work by a write up and picture in the junior Red Cross journal, and by several displays of her dolls in store windows in Erie. They are of great variety, boy dolls and girl dolls, black dolls and white dolls, pandas, penquins, camels, horses, and pigs, all made from donated materials. Both Miss Koerber's and Miss Parker's classes have made afghans, bed jackets, bedroom slippers. bed socks, and utility bags to be used by convalescent service men and bombing victims. Miss Parker's classes, in addition, made three pairs of curtains for the Red Cross Headquarters. The Greenhouse trains victory gardeners. Ar-1 Classes In cooperation with the junior Red Cross, our art classes, under the supervision of Miss Lillis, Miss Snyder, and Mrs, Whaley, have worked to bring cheer to our servicemen in hospitals, over- seas, and on ships, chiefly in the form of holiday decorations and greeting cards. For example, one unit for Christmas consisted of 1,352 pieces and included tray favors, ice cream spike decorations, bulletin board and stand up decorations, and Christmas cards. The quota for all Erie was two such units, and East High completed an entire one alone. ln addition, they made menu covers, clown hats, bridge score pads, crossword puzzles, writing portfolios, and greeting cards for Birth- days, Mother's Day, Easter, and even Fourth of july. These things were shipped before we could get a picture of them. Instead we show you another of their projects. a painting on a window to simu- late stained glass. Milloy, Faculty Advisor To become a member of the National Honor Society at East is the ambition of most students. Membership, however, is not so easily attained. A student's eligibility is determined by his scholastic average. If a student is in the upper third of his class, his name is submitted to all the teachers in the building who rate him for character, service, and leadership. Leadership is determined by a students ability to hold school offices and positions of responsibility successfully. Character includes personality, honesty, reliability, and cofoperation. Service is achieved by working on committees and rendering service to teachers and school when called upon to do so. The ratings are then totaled and the students who have the necessary qualifications are passed upon by a special committee of teachers. Many students who are eligible are kept out because of the quota set up by the national organif zation. Only l5 Q of the graduating class, IOCQ of the 121 class and SW ofthe llf2 class may join. The names of the new membersfelect are kept secret until the very day of induction. This is a most solemn and effective ceremony. Old members go out and tap the new members on the shoulder to indicate that they have been chosen. These few End their ambition fulfilled and become eligible to wear the treasured official pin of the National Honor Society. 9 .... ,Q X V M-1 J 4 .4 A - -IUNIOR GIRLS' CHORUS'-First Row: Margaret E.
