Through years that saw us enter and advance And in this last that brings us to goodbye, His work has been our sceptre and our lance To lash proud purple glory 'cross the sky. A scholar brilliant, and a teacher great, A friend to all, in victory or defeat, His meek example to our lives has leased A hope that knows not terror or retreat. Along the well-worn Indian trails, went the great westward emigrants, first on foot or on horseback, and later in the famous Conestoga wagons, or prairie schooners. The Conestoga wagon, with its bright blue paint, and its curved bottom that prevented freight from slipping out of place on rough mountain roads, proved great in a fair way. On the roads the long, long train of Conestogas carried freight and passengers that brought prosperity to the cities. The Conestogas played a small but interesting part in the early settlement of Erie. 11 The Sunrise Staff i Wallace, Blakey, Baker, Edwin Valma James Literary Editor-in-Chief Business Editor Manager Alexandrowicz, Joseph Blasczyk, Redmond, Stella Ruth Szczypinski, Edwin Associate Business Manager Assistant Sports Circulation Literary Editor Manager Editor Fryer, Jeanne Ohman, Rachael Speros, Glenna Yusz, Katherine Mihalic. Washington, writing in his journal when he visited Fort Le Boeuf in 1753, stated that the fort was situated on an island in Le Boeuf Creek. Four houses composed the sides. The bastions, made of piles driven in the ground, and standing more than 12 feet above it, were sharp at the top, and had port holes for the small arms to fire through. There were eight 6-pound field pieces mounted in each bastion and one piece of 4-pound before the gate. In the bastions were a guard-house, a chapel, a doctor's lodging, and the commander's private store, around which were laid platforms on which the cannon and men could be stationed. There were several barracks without the fort for the soldier's dwellings. Low stables, and a smith's shop stood underneath the hemlock, from which Washington viewed the actions in the fort while he was waiting to take a message back to Governor Dinwiddie. 41 12-B Class Fourth Row -Lang, Alfred; Markham, Sheldon; Kulick, Paul; Slagter, Meryl; Sperides, Tom; Murphy. After twenty years of warfare, Anthony Wayne left the West destined for his home in Chester County. As a result of a severe case of gout, he was unable to go further than Presque Isle, where he was given quarters in the second story of the blockhouse. A friend physician arrived too late to minister, and death took its course. Two days later, in accordance with his last wishes, his uniformed remains were placed in a board casket and buried at the foot of the flagstaff of that same block house, while the Stars and Stripes fluttered at half-mast. On July 4, 1809, the remains of Anthony Wayne were laid to rest with his fathers at Radnor, Pennsylvania. 43 GIRLS Abramoski. Eleanor Adamczyk, Ann Alexander, Marjorie Amendola. It stands as a memorial upon the spot where Anthony Wayne fought his last fight. Ours is the honor of having with us the original place of his burial, with military honors, within a military post, wherein he had expired. Here, too, is a hallowed spot of memory, and one which forms a shrine of our patriotic observance. It is our duty to consecrate this spot where lies he who fought the Indians of our country. Here, we citizens should in all reverence resort from time to time, and pay our respects to his gallant memory. 46 10-A GIRLS Amendold, Helen Arnold, Betty Arnold, Vivian Baker, Jean Baranowski, Mary Bebko, Mary Behrinder, Ethel Bielak, Kathleen Bielanin, Pearl Bakal, Rose Borski, Sophie Brackett, Marie Bradley, Mary Burke, Margaret Campbell, Alma Carnahan, Dorothy Carter, Ruth Ceic, Stella Chellis, La Verne Condon, Kathryn Cook, Elizabeth Cook, Margaret Crotty, Mary Crowley, Lillian Czemeryzh, Frances Dart, Lucille Denial, Anna Dombrowski, Irene Downing, Jewell Dyleski, Theresa Enas, Ijois Feldt, Ranghild Franke, Doris Frankoff, Virginia Franz, Harriet Genele, Nancy Godlewski, Genevieve Golsky, Rita Golabieski, Irene Grygo, Helen Haffey, Bertha Hartman, Barbara Hayes, Betty Heintz, Elaine Heubel, Jean Hewitt, Catherine Hirt, Nancy Hoffman, Delores Ivan, Cecelia Jasley, Frances Jeska, Veronica Kapsalaki, Irene Kavka, Helen Kinecki, Helen Klein, Leona Komormy, Eleanore Kondzielski, Josephine Kosko, Sadie Kowalik, Charlotte Krosowski, Irene Kuzmiskin, Mary La Price, Gertrude Lewis, Elizabeth Loomis, Edith Lubiak, Sophie Lynch, Mary GIRLS Maciukiewicz, Josephine Mader, Helen Martin, Marion Matuszak, Florence Merritt, Jeanne Moncton, Elaine Monseur, Betty Mozur, Katherine Mros, Frances Murphy, Catherine Murphy, Imelda Murphy, Marcella Nagorski, Betty Jo Niedzielski, Margaret Navella, Helen Olszewski, Rita Page, Pearl Palmer, Janice Pastore, Alvena Paulson, Anita Pickut, Frances Pius, Dorothy Place, Dorothy Ras, Julia Reichel, Marie Reidel, Matilda Rogaski, Wanda Ravnak, Mary Rullman, Dorothy Rung, Margaret Rutemueller, Florence Sauner, Shirley Schemeck, Cuiestine Sieter, Monica Simon, Frances Somolinia, Anna Sopp, Ellen Stadler, Mary Margaret Stonek, Jennie Stezin, Eva Strello, Irene Suddarth, Mary Sulewski, Esther Swanson, Anne Swanson, Lois Szymanski, Leona Taylor, Evelyn Tenenblum, Nellie Tuszynski, Eleanor Veit, Mary Jane Wallace, Margaret Winkewitz, Esther Wisniewski, Esther Yurkovitch, Mary Zill, Alice BOYS Bixby, Chester Blossey, Stephen Borek, Edward Britton, Charles Brojek, Chester Brojek, Stanley Caldwell, Russell Calos, Anthony BOYS Carlson, William Carnahan, David Carr, Paul Cribbins, Lawrence Crocoll, Carl Currier, George Dalewski, Andrew Daniels, Robert Dengel, Joseph Drezewski, Edward Duell, Curvin Ebish, Robert Erickson, George Fioretti, Giacom Fondy, Anthony George, John Giglio, Joseph Gornall, William Gorezeski, Raymond Grant, Matthew Greene, William Gryejka, Thaddeus Guzak, Steve Hess, Norman Hayes, William Hyland, Frederick Jaskiewicz, John Johnson, James Jones, Bruce Jozefski, Steve Justka, Raymond Kiehlmeir, James Kaminski, Chester Kielbasinski Leo Kierzak, Frank Kendzior, Jerome Klein, Victor Knoll, Joseph Kossbiel, George Kraft, William Leonbacker, John Lobek, Frank Maryan, Harry McLaughlin, John Meyer, William McShane, John Morgan, William Ohman, Helge Olesiak, Carl Olcff, Stanley Ostrowski, Chester Penna, James Piekanski, Edward Pietrzak, Chester Pulakos, George Renning, Charles Rinderle, George Ring, Arthur Seifert, Earl Servinski, Raymond Siatkowski, Michael Smillie, Bill Smith, George Smolinsky, Steve Snyder, Eugene Sokolowski, Fred 47 10-A BOYS Strobel, Roil Sweeney, Richard Thomas, Charles Tromans, Carroll Turco, Anthony Tuszynski, Clark Tynecki, Edward GIRLS Ahlgren, Inga Alexivicz, Helen Argenv, Virginia Avril, Winifred Beill, Dorothy Blaszczyk, Helen Boyle, Betty Burger, Lillian Claybough, Janice Coccarelli, Concettina Crishock, Eleanor Daub, Charlotte Davey, Evelyn Davis, Verna De Angelo, Celia Dench, Betty Doyle, June Efimoff, Catherine Essigman, Mary Evans, Dorothy Evans, Margaret Fitzgerald, Juanita Gardner, Velma Greene, Betty Jane Jackson, Christina Janis, Clementine Junod, Dorothy Kallberg, Doris Kinney, Muriel Kozlowski, Jxittie J aBoda, Sue Leonard, Margaret Lewis, Arvilla Loader, Rosina MacDonald, Virginia Minnich, Jean Moore, Marjorie Newsham, Harriet O'Shea, Catherine Paterniti, Angeline Persianoff, Lillian Pintea, Martha BOYS Visnosky, William Vojtek, Frank Weber, Richard Westerholm, Walter Wieczorek, Jack White, Clyde 10-B GIRLS Pinto, I enora Pohl, Marie Riblet, Helen Rick, Margaret Simon, Anne Sokolowski, Regina Sorenson, Margaret Stefanowicz, Edna Szumigala, Charlotte Taylor, Ruth Weaver, Jean Weschler, Helene Woloshyn, Anna Wootton, Waneta Wyatt, E)ella Wysocki, Julia Yusz, Dorothy BOYS Ahrens, Kenneth Ames, Donald Arbus, John Barber, Robert Beskid, Steve Black, Joe Blasic, Walter Burdick, Robert Cook, Anthony Cronin, William Crudo, Anthony Davis, John Decker, Vance Demchak, Paul Eichenlaub, Kendall Etter, Robert Faulhaber, Donald Feasler, Frank Finke, Ernest Glancy, James Gool, Denny Gornall, Fletcher BOYS Whitman, Robert Will, Barton Winschel, Fred Wishon, Paul Young, Vincent Yurcan, Walter BOYS Griffin, Robert Hewitt, Edward Hill, George Hoydic, Henry JakuJxwski, Walter Klutz, Joseph Koprowski, Harry Koscielniak, Walter Lininger, Francis London. It was the message that had anxiously been awaited by those at home. It did not contain a hint of the fierce battle fought by Perry and his men. With the words Don't Give Up the Ship” printed on his flag, Perry spurred his followers into action and won a victory that has long been glorified by historians. When the Lawrence was sunk, Perry removed his flag to the Niagara, and from there commanded the victory. After peace had been declared between the United States and Great Britain in 1814, orders were forwarded from Washington to sink the fleet in the harbor for preservation. In 1836, Captain George Miles purchased and raised them, intending to fit them for the merchant service. Since he found them unseaworthy, he allowed them to sink again. In 1913 William Pasch raised the Niagara and launched it on Presgue Isle for exhibition purposes. 63 1937 Track J. F. Hyde, Coach John Flick, Asst. Mgr. Charles Brandt, Manager L. Wuenschell, Asst. The Erie Light was built east of the village of Presgue Isle opposite the harbor entrance, in the year 1818. This historic monument of former lake activities was the first lighthouse to be erected on the Great Lakes. ''Erie Light has been rebuilt twice: first, in 1858, of bricks; and last, in 1866, of stone. At this time an improved French lantern was installed. Twelve keepers have done their part to maintain the safety of our lake. Captain John Bone, the first keeper, took charge in 1818; George W. Miller, the last, was appointed in 1885, and had charge until the light was discontinued. At the present time the stone tower is still intact, but the lantern has been removed. 106 They had new neighbors, and the wife was much interested in them. The cow's tail is mounted aft and has a universal joint. It is used to disturb marauding flies and the tassel on the end has unigue educational value. Persons who come in contact with the tassel have vocabularies of peculiar and impressive force. The cow has two stomachs. The one in the ground floor is used as a warehouse and has no other function. When this one is filled, the cow retires to a quiet stop where her bad manners will occasion no comment. The raw material thus conveyed for the second time to the interior of her face is pulverized and delivered to the auxiliary stomach, where it is converted into cow. 'The cow has no upper plate. All of her teeth are parked in the lower part of her face. This arrangement was perfected by an efficiency expert to keep her from gumming things up. As a result she bites up and gums down. « « Why are you late this morning, Mr. Bon Bon, asked a boss of a Scotch employee. VALMA BLAKEY Editor-in-Chief 115 Lighthouse on Presque Isl£- Presque Isle Light, which is called the flash-light, was built in 1873. It is located on the north shore of the peninsula. We are all familiar with the red brick tower, the keeper's low dwelling, and most of all, the white revolving beam. Before the peninsula drive was built, the only way to reach the lighthouse was by water. A boathouse was built on the shore of Misery Bay for the keeper, and from there he crossed to his home by way of a walk, formerly wooden, but now concrete. This walk is now used by nature lovers in quest of the rare beauties found in the Presque Isle forest. 116 a The Representative Manufacturers and Merchants of Erie, Pa. 19 UNION-PURE Ice Delivery Company MANUFACTURED ICE Yellow Trucks—23-279 Blue Trucks—22-236 — LEM CITY Ice Cream STANLEY “Erie's Finest Made’’ Ice Cream, Sherbets, Fancy Moulds and Specialties BROS. Four When His Mark was good form Even as recently in history as the settlement of America, it was considered no disgrace to sign a contract with a “mark.” Writing w as a fine art, confined to a few scriveners, who “sucked their sustenance, as certain sick people are said to do, through a quill.” Yet today even the day-lahorer declares his income over his own signature, and immigrants from tin most backward sections of the globe attend night school to form their names with pencil and pen. W hat was once a special art lias become a common and unnoticed accomplishment throughout civilization. When writing paper was rare the average man had no particular need of knowing how to write, for lie had nothing to write upon. When means were invented for making large quantities of paper cheaply, writing came into common experience and “his mark” went out. Hammermill Paper Company Eric, Pennsylvania.
