among Pawtucket citizens in the rapidly growing city high school. Thus in the year 1900 when Professor Elmer S Hosmer took over the significant office of headmaster or principal the new Broadway building Pawtucket high school to most citizens had become a pride and joy yet there were still those who did not believe in free public education beyond grammar school The pupils now numbered three hundred the faculty were faithful loyal college graduates with exceptional ability and aptitude for their work 1900 to 1922 was a period of rapid expan sion until it became necessary to hold a two session school with the three upper classes recit ing in the forenoon and the lower class ln the afternoon a system which some of todays students might appreciate' During the reign of Lucius A Whipple came the greatest advancement the building of a firm foundation on the banks of the Black stone which has supported the education Pawtucket now for almost thirty years-our own East High School Built in the year 1927 the beautlful institution an architectural master piece equipped with all the modern conveniences of the day opened the eyes of not only Pawtucket people but also people throughout the country to see this material reminder of the efforts and sacrifices of the community in the development of education It may be interesting to note that the Ex- change Street that existed when this school was built, had a very different appearance than the Exchange Street of today On the cobblestone roadway were car tracks which were part of the line to Attleboro A Chinese laundry a variety and periodical store of Henry H Cobb next to it and a large building adjacent occupied as an automobile repair shop by Frank Crook all felt the effect of educational progress for they were removed to make way for the new school The principalship of the new East High School has been occupied by three worthy men Alfred J Maryott 61931 1940? Henryj Winters 1191019493 and at present Mr ames P Mc Geough Again during the 30s evidence could be seen of overcrowded classrooms demanding the use of double sessions Finally the building of another high school in the city How times have changed' The story of Pawtuckets school system is truly one of the little red schoolhouse which has gradually be come a giant structure of modern architecture a monument to American education a visible re sult of the endeavor and sacrifice of many people Here in our own East High lies a symbol of knowledge enshrined for posterity It is our hope that the high attainment reached in our present educational system shall ever remain the lamp of life along the pathway of humanity PRESENT PAWTUCKET EAST SENIOR HIGH of ,, - - ' 9 7 . . - 9 v . .
