1855 A CENTURY IN REVIEW 1 Cherished memories of high school days have remained an intangible treasure for Paw tucket citizens dating back to the Civil War years when Pawtucket then part of Massachu setts held its place on the map as a small town amidst wooded areas and farmlands Exactly one hundred years ago the first Pawtucket high school was established as an indication of the desire of the populace for better education higher standards of living and further progress in the future On April 9 1855 at a meeting of the Paw tucket School Committee a motion was enter tained and unammously 'agreed upon by its five members to establish a high school in the city of Pawtucket a high school that was to become a reality a beginning simply by the efforts of these five qualified persons who lived just a century ago Immediately a special committee empow ered with the task of procurmg a suitable teacher for the school set to work A month later it was voted that Mr William Tolman a graduate of Brown University be given the position as the first principal of Pawtucket High School The school was to commence within two weeks May 14 1855 classes bemg held in the Summit Street Schoolhouse The only entrance require ments for students entering from grammar school were Arithmetic as far as mterest Geography through Smiths Quarto English grammar discretionary with School Committee Reading and Spellmg good All prospective students were examined by the school committee and admitted to the High School with the understanding that should any of them be unable to keep pace with the majority of their classes they should be put back into the grammar school The school opened with an attendance of fifty pupils twenty six boys and twenty four girls from eleven to fifteen years of age The high school year was divided into three terms beginning the Monday after the first Wednesday in September The first term was continued for fifteen weeks followed by a vaca tion of one week The second term continued to the first of April followed by a vacation of two weeks The third term continued fourteen weeks followed by summer vacation the amount of school time somewhat similar to our present system In the succeeding year 1856 fourteen new students were admitted and an assistant prin cipal Elizabeth Ann Cleaveland was appointed at a salary of only twenty dollars per month From the original pupils six entered college and five became teachers Because of the loyalty and devotion of the first pioneers in the advancement of higher edu cation the first high school begun originally as an experiment proved its mdispensability , L , ... . classmen and the lovser floor which was used by the entering class was in the charge of a sub master A small room on the first floor was crudely equipped for a science laboratory since the school did not have 1 science department English Greek Latin and mathematlts were among the ch1ef subyects However in 1897 the church property yy is condemned as unfit for the school and classes were moved to the old grammar school at High and Exchange Streets At the same time classes mostly Greelt and Latin were held in the house at Montgomery and North Union Streets form erly the prnvate school of Lois Greene At this time the Garden Street school was built providing a new location for the high school classes To this building the classes were transferred for one year to await the opening of a new roadway edifice which IS now joseph enks junior High School The year 1893 marked the beginning of a new high school curriculum the inauguration of science and commercial courses the mttna tion of a sports program the establishment of the Sumner Lyceum and the first publlcatlon of a school newspaper The Gleaner All these acttvitxes are today enjoyed by modern high school students A sports program was begun featurmg base ball and football as the chief sports practice being held at the old Dexter Street trammg grounds at the corner of Barton and Weeden Streets Harry Gardner the late ames Higgins Edwin Thayer judge Payne and Myron Curtis became the stars Some of the outstanding students were Dr Alexander Melkleyohn the late Gov ames H Higgins the late Mayor john Fitzgerald and Attorney Thomas P Corcoran In 1893 was established the lyceum in mem ory of Charles Sumner The enviable Pawtucket PAWILCKFT HIGH IN IJ00 High debating team with the late Gov Higgins as a leading figure enjoyed an envious record of victories The official school paper The Gleaner was printed for the first time in 1892 some of its first editors being the late Attorney Robert In those days the pupils went to grammar school for nine years and high school for four years the high school hours beginning at 8 50 am and ending at 2 00 pm Diplomas were awarded in three grades that IS for classical English and commercial courses separately Al though the requirements for college entrance demanded high scholastic standards many Paw tucket High graduates were admitted and the school s reputation became admirable An early contribution to the success of a parent teacher relationship began in the 18905 when an Alumni association attempted an organ ization similar to that of our Parent Teacher Association which became quite effective tn bringing about a closer relationship between the High School and Community As a result a great deal of mterest and enthusiasm was aroused VIARX O'I'T XYINTFRS MtGEOl GH ' r V I Y 7 Y 277 , y , Q I C K s I s Iv 1 K S Y 7 . . n v I -1 V 72 , 4 z . . t , , , , I , , y - . . . . . , 1 , . a . . 5 y . . n . . 9 3 . a 1 - 3 l l v ' Emerson, Fred Arnold, and Mary Rogers. , . , . . , . . . .
