J Prnneipalgs essage Some weeks ago I was asked to have my mes sage ready for the 15th of March Here and now the Ides of March have arrived It IS not easy to compose thoughts today be cause I too feel with you the keen disappoint ment of the loss of the State Basketball Cham pxonshlp to Rogers High of Newport 1n a closely played game at Marvel Gym last night It was a very bitter pill to take but out of that defeat and the consequent frustration of our hopes and plans at the time let us look in retrospect Gone IS the bltterness and chagrln caused by the loss of the above mentioned game Tlme the healer of all wounds has bound up those sores and thus a great lesson has been learned early by you Of course we all looked forward to seemg our team 1n Boston and the New England Cham plonshlps but lt was just not in the books for us to win Why? I don t know As you go through life you are going to meet other disappointments some just as keenly felt as the event last March-others more severely and more lastmg The sooner you learn to accept these dlsappomtments as coming from the above for your own good the sooner will the keenness of the injury be lessened I' rom every experience elther 1nd1v1dua1 or group whether of vnctory or defeat you should draw profit Iet your joys and sorrows not emblt ter you but rather make use of them to enrlch and develop your personalltv and character Let them also deepen and broaden your spxrxtualxty for it 15 the neglect of this development 1n the world today which has caused the prevalence of so many ills mental physical and soclal We must get back to fundamentals and look beyond the here and now Sc1ent1fic and technological progress knowledge of the arts and literature athletic prowess have not produced peace and happiness Each of you whether you realize lt or not possesses an abundant power to influence others around you Be on the offensive 1n brmg mg peace and happiness to others-your famlly your frlends your church your school your commun1ty The world today lacks charity Too many people are laboring under the impression that since you are not in full agreement with them Following this illogical reasoning to its conclusion they make all the trouble they can and are forever both dissatisfied and unsatlsfied If you will only concentrate on g1v1ng to others th treatment you yourself would enjoy it will sur prlse you how greatly what you have given will be reflected back to you Now as you are preparmg to leave the shel ter1ng halls of East High where you have been guided and directed in this phase of your educa tion some to continue in schools of hlgher educa tion others ln the armed services and still others to places of business and industry our hopes for your success and happiness go with you Our faith in you IS strong We know that you will not let us down To whatever field of endeavor you aspire give your best efforts at all times and lf at first you don t succeed try again If you get knocked down don t give up--GET UP Good luck and God be with you JAMES P MCGEOUGH 9 ' 9 9 9 9 5 . - , . , . i ' S - 7 . 9 . , 1 3 X Www J v . . .
