MR JAMES P MCGEOUGH Metra e DEAR CLASS I do not have to tell you that these are very uncertam and very dangerous days You know that from glancmg at newspaper headllnes and your class dnscussrons Then too four of your classmates who should be graduatmg w1th you are already ln the armed servlces of the country Before another school year begxns many more of your classmates will be rn some branch of the servxce domg thelr but to carry on the freedoms and rdeals for whxch thns country stands But a world at war or preparmg for war, ns nothmg new to the graduatmg class of 1951 Look back to your entrance lnto the first grade War had already broken out rn Europe and our own coun try was bemg propagandrzed for entrance mto the confllct Before you had left elementary school we were embrorled Smce the cessatron of open hostrlmes the world has been gomg through a successnon of grabs by Russia takmg over by so called blood less revolutions -entrre natnons and subjecting them to her form of government at the same trme carrymg on a cold war wnth our own country and the free natrons of Europe And why does th1s sort of unrest and turbu lence prevall today? Why IS rt that our boys graduatmg from hlgh school must defer therr plans to launch their careers untxl they have com pleted thenr commrtments wnth the armed forces? It rs because the world at large has lost Slght of the word TRUTH In the Communist vocabu lary there IS no such word and rts opposlte the LIE 15 used on any and all occasnons Thus practlce has become so wnde spread that nt rs affectmg our entxre soclety You know xt rs not only by drrect word of mouth that we are untruthful We he when we do not do the thmgs to whxch we are asslgned For example each of you wnll be work mg IH some field or other after graduatxon some m schools some rn lndustry some rn buslness and others m the servrces All will have duties and oblngatlons to fit your statron m lnfe or any lack of aggressnveness rn assummg your oblxgatrons you are lxvmg a he You are bemg untruthful to your employer and to yourself Unless you perform your dutnes and oblrgatnons to the best of your abnlmes then you are bemg defimtely untruthful The reason I am wrntrng to you rn th1s vem 15 because you are now leavmg us at East Hlgh to start carvmg your nrche 1n the world How far you go how hrgh up the ladder you cllmb wxll depend upon yourself Remember the words of th1s message BE TRUTHFUL and combme them wnth the message I gave you on CHARITY at the Chrrstmas assembly Wrth these two vnr tues of TRUTH and CHARITY you need fear nothmg because God w1ll be ever close to you I have the hrghest regard and esteem for all the members of my 1951 class It IS because of your untnrxng efforts m behalf of East Hugh School and your cooperatlon with me and the faculty you have earned that esteem and regard So now good luck good health and God be wnth you S ' ll ,S ' . , . . , . 1 , . - ' 5 9 . 7 If there is any shirking of duty on your part , . . Mlss FLORA S CURTIS MISS FLORA S CURTIS teacher and guidance councllor whose advlce and understanding has helped the countless students wxth whom she has worked started her career nn 1905 as a teacher of English Latin and French m Central Falls Hugh School Stx years later she entered Pawtucket Hugh School where m 1924 she began work as an advtser When East Hrgh School was erected m 1926 she began her work there as Dean and with Mr Hosmer inaugurated many new methods In admxnlstratton and gutdance Recipient of a Curtis took summer courses and obtanned her M A degree from Brown m 1956 Former puptls remember Miss Curtxs not only as a kmd advxser but also as the dnrector who bunlt up the Dramatxc Socnety and whose superb plays won recogmnon m the State Drama Festnal Wlth many brtlhant successes-three of whnch won the N E Drama Festival and many years of energetic service to her credit Mlss Curtis re tired as head of the Dramatic Society tn 1947 Her avnd mterest ln drama was not confmed to the school thespxans for Mxss Curtis belonged to the Providence Players Sock and Buskln and 15 one of the most actxve members tn the Pawtucket Commumty Players Besldes her work tn dramatlcs Mlss Curtis has always been very actxve m cnvnc affaxrs Through the years she has been noted for the actxve part she has played m the YWCA the League nme of her renrement she belonged to the Paw tucket Teachers Allnance and the Cnvxc Counctl on Educatnon Miss Curtts has been more than a teacher more than a counselor more than a dnrector She has been a source of mspxratton to every student who was fortunate enough to know her For her friendship and guldance we the class of Sl press out grantude B.A. degree from Mount Holyoke College, Miss of Women Voters' and the Quota Club' A' the U . . 4 -V ' .
