The one hundredth anniversary of the Gold Rush of 1849 recalls the glorious days of our country in an exciting and colorful period of growth. The hardy pion- eers who helped open the West were undaunted in their quest for riches. Success crowned the efforts of someg dis- appointment and failure, others. So will it be with the present forty-niners. The gold we seek will have different meanings. To some it may represent material richesg to others it may stand for a bright new era where peace and the brotherhood of man will be realitiesg or it may simply be the satisfaction that derives from a life well lived. What- ever is our objective in the days ahead, let us take a measure of guidance from the same spirit and courage that inspired the pioneers of one hundred years ago. f w ,, 5 f. , - M J , ,, , ' V ' . cf. .J , ' 1 'W p m. , W 'MT' va-uf 'Q . 1 ' -, Qu if '1 1 1 4 gif 1 lei' 1 F ff, . You have been friendly and faithful students ever since I have known you and it is with regret that I have decided not to stay with you through your graduation. I am sure that your new principal will have fine things to say about you in June and that you will feel that he has indeed been your friend and counselor. For your life after graduation I am truly solicitous. I would like to repeat to you the closing words of my message to the Class of 1940 with which I became associated in April of that year. I said: nMay life bring you countless blessings. May your destiny so fashion itself that you will be able to hold fast to your ideals and to guard your soulfs integrity. Without falling victims to educa- tional snobbery may you learn to appreciate the true spirit of noblesse oblige. I wish you wealth and high honor. I Eespeak for you happiness and contentment. May your hearts be clean: may your dreams come true.U W M03 ' Henry J. Winters A Former Principal Declicvzlimz MR. HENRY J. WINTERS To Mr. Henry J. Winters, our retired principal of East High School, a man of intellect, discernment, understanding, and keen wit, with high ideals and a sense of fair play, who unselfishly devoted a life- time to the improvement of education, we, the Class of 1949, respectfully dedicate our Classbook. Miss SARAH M. OSBORN Miss Sarah M. Osborn, an alumna of Pembroke College and teacher of Latin for forty-four years in Pawtucket, retired in june. Miss Osborn is so shy and unassum- ing that few really know her well. How- ever, those fortunate few treasure greatly her gentleness, kindness, understanding, and delightfully keen wit. She is outstand- ing in her lield. Reports of her pupils studying at college testify to the excellent background received in her classes. The faculty, administrative staff, and students of East High School extend to Miss Osborn their very best wishes for continued health and happiness. Aequo auimo quad semper Semper felix, .temper fdelis Sem in -aelum redeem. Miss EDITH D. DAVISON Miss Edith D. Davison rctircd in june after forty-six years as a teacher in the schools of Pawtucket. ,After her gradua- tion from Pembroke College in 1900, she began her career in the elementary schools and taught in the grades for twenty-five years, most of which were under Mr. Henry J. Winters. For the past twenty-one years she was teacher of geometry at East Senior High School. The countless students who were fortunate enough to receive her in- struction acquired a sound preparation for the study of higher mathematics. Miss Davison justly deserves the high-praise and deep appreciation so sincerely voiced by all her students. MR. JAMES P. MCGEOUGH MR. WILLIAM W. LEE p Pvfincijmfs M essa ge When I began my duties as principal of East Senior High School I was cognizant of many emotions swelling within me-emotions that ran the gamut from sorrow to joy. With sorrow I left our friendly but arch rival, West High, because of the many friends I have made among the faculty, the parents of the students, and the students themselves. For many reasons, however, I accepted with joy the promotion to the principalship of East High: first, because many of the facul- ty I have known since my earliest boyhood days here in Pawtucket, and it has been a pleasure once again to be with them, secondly, because many of the students here are children of parents with whom I was well acquainted back in those bygone days and again it is a joy to be renewing those old, dormant acquaint- ancesg thirdly, since my grammar school days I have known and respected Mr. Henry J. Winters, my predecessor. To carry, ever up- ward and onward, the high ideals set by him is a joy and a challenge. His was not an easy task, nor do I look for a road covered with garlands and roses myself. As you leave us behind, who have been your teachers and your guides, you have our hopes and prayers that, whatever you under- take, you will strive with all your knowledge, with your heart, Nad your intelligence to reach the pinnacle you have set for yourself. And in your heart have tolerance. In these days when hate runs rampant in the world, culti- vate the virtue of charity. If in our hearts each of us knew and practiced charity there would be little need of preaching tolerance. Don't ever be ashamed to pray to God, to put your trust and confidence in Him, to ask Him for the guidance and direction that He alone can giveg and rest assured that your fu- ture will be full of attainment and happiness. Good luck and God bless you. JAMES P. M essczge WE GRADUATE from this school as a class which is proud of its accomplish- ments, for during the past three years we have attained degrees of success in every branch of the curriculum. I am sure that the record we have made will live in the annals of the school. We will always remember East Senior High School as the institution which has helped prepare us to face the future. We can no longer rely on our capable instructors, who have shown unlimited patience in helping us solve our problems. We shall now have our opportunity to make use of the lessons we have learned here. The application of our knowledge will prove the test of our success. Some of us may continue our education in higher institutions of learning, while others, less fortunate, must immediately start to earn a livelihood. Whichever our lot may be, I am confident that we will do all in our power to add honor to the Class of '49. 1 In behalf of the class officers I extend my best wishes for happiness and success to all the members of this graduating class. In attempting to reach our goal, I know that we of the Class of '49 will show the same enthusiasm, initiative, and high courage that characterized those other and more famous '49'ers in the quest for their El Dorado. Through three short years of work and play We each did strive for fame, But now we leave these treasured halls, To play in Life's hard game, Gone are the joys of bygone days, These years of friendships true, As toward the future we now turn, And start in life anew. And when we meet with obstacles And all our cause seems lost, We'11 think of lessons learned at East, To guide us on Life's course. At a battered old desk Ralph Zalus- ky, the clear-thinking chairman, is di- recting the meeting. Beside him, in a tilted chair, Arthur Little is poring over the records of incoming funds from ad- vertisements, scrap-paper drives, and a roller-skating party while his assistant, Nancy Rahill, is collecting payments for classbooks from home room representa- tives. Leo Cardosi, advertising manager, and his assistant, Bob Baldani, have the important task of aiding Arthur arrange advertisements in the dummy. In a far corner of the room three girls are conferring over a stack of sketches. This group is the art commit- tee headed by Ruth Deshaies, the hard- working art editor and originator of the '49 sketches. The Classbook Board of 1949 has wanted to keep up the high standards of our predecessors and to make our class- book the best in the history of the East Senior High School. Audrey, the sister of' last year's recipient, Earline Marsh, is a shy and industrious senior who graduated from Prospect Street School and then from jenks junior High where she won an essay contest in the ninth grade. She is a member of the Classbook Board, Press Club, Dramatic Society, Radio Club, and is president of the German Club. For a year she was secretary of the Hi-Light staff. Audrey will enter Pembroke College in -September, where she hopes to prepare herself for the eventual fulfillment of her ambition-wrio ing her autobiography. Raymond Rossi also comes from Prospect Street and Jenks junior High Schools. He has been active in sports such as basketball, base- ball, and track. He made the senior varsity basketball squad in his sophomore year and became a first string short-stop on the baseball team. Because of his feats on the Cross Country Team where he broke several records as a long-distance runner, Ray was made cap- tain in his senior year. He is also co-captain of the 'jackets' Class A basketball team, treasurer of the senior class, and a junior Rotarian. Audrey and Ray easily met the standards of scholarship, de- pendability, co-operation, courtesy, loyalty, and leadership demanded of all winners of the good citizenship awards. Under the editorship of Ralph Zalusky the Hi-Light has flourished, supplying news of sports and of various club activities. The front page announces the news of the moment with bold headlines. The editorial page offers an opportunity to express students' views on such contro- versial topics as Should The Driving Age Be Raised? Also found on this page are the features You Know Them By , the school's Who's Who, and jean Fillion's ulnquiring Reporter . A section is reserved for up-and-coming young poets in Corner of Poetic Injustice . The Hi-Light awards to its deserving members a gold pin for earning 400 points through advertizing or writing, or a silver pin for 100 points. The Press Club furnishes the ways and means for earning enough money for these pins. This year they again sponsored a student-faculty game, which brought in enough to banish their worries for another year. Radio Club The Radio Club of 1949 under the guidance of Miss Brazeau and its president, joan Aspinwall, has had a full and successful year. With the proceeds from a roller-skating party that they sponsored they were able to purchase a wire recorder. The group took part in a series of programs called Youth Talks It Over , which was presented over WEAN under the sponsorship of the Rhode Island Congress of P. T. A. Another radio workshop project was The American Heritage series. This was a collection of stories about the famous documents of the Freedom Train. For its library the club received from station WPJB-FM a transcription of President Trumanis State of the Union address of January sixth, and from Arthur Paquette, music director of WFCI, there was a presentation of six 16-inch transcriptions of Five Centuries of French Music . During the Easter vacation the combined radio clubs of East and West planned to go to Boston for a tour of radio stations and college radio workshops. At the end of the year one member of the club will be selected by Miss Brazeau and David Brook of WFCI to receive the Radio Club Award, a watch, given annu- ally by WFCI for outstanding participation in the club program. The songsters gathered in Room 408 once a week to practice and perfect their reper- toire. They took part in Glee Club ac- tivities, singing several numbers in the Christmas assembly. Their most impor- tant appearance, however, was their con- cert of Christmas music given at the Paw- tucket Woman's Club. They were rep- resented at the Rhode Island Music Fes- tival, and on Class Day the graduates re- ceived pins for one year of membership. BOYS' GLEE CLUB No coverage of the Music Depart- ment would be complete without men- tion of the Boys' Glee Club. ROMP The Royal Order of Master Pho- tographers, familiarly known as ROMP, conducted a series of slide lectures as its major activity. The series was presented with the aid of a leading photographic concern and did much to enlighten the members in regard to technical problems. In adition to the lectures, there was a memorable meeting at which John Av- edesian, a club member, presented his Kodachrome slides and talked of his ex- periences in Germany. We all agreed that the ROMP had had a successful and busy year under the leadership of Miss Mary Quirk, consultant. LIBRARY CLUB The nineteen members of the Li- brary Club, with joan Cavanaugh as president, inaugurated a busy season with a party for the new sophomore members. The club also celebrated the Christmas season with two social affairs. At an as- sembly period during Book Week six girls gave reports about the many new booksithe library offered to pupils. By selling candy at the hrst Dramatic So- ciety play, the club earned money for pins and for more books. Thus, the Li- brary Club had a prosperous and enjoy- able year. y Under Miss Irene Carlin's skillful leadership the group was most active, performing many services for the school and enjoying themselves at the same time. ONE WORLD CULTURAL CLUB The One World Cultural Club was organized by Dr. Leoni's classes. The purpose of the group was to teach stu- dents to think in terms of One World, to help them realize that all human beings are inter-dependent, and to help them understand the humanitarian ideals of the United Nations' Charter. The program was a full one, includ- ing speakers from Poland and Germany, who described conditions in those coun- tries. THE SENIOR RECEPTION THE JUNIOR PROM COMMITTEE On the evening of June 10, 1949, the most important social function of the year took place when the school gymna- sium was transformed into a Viennese ballroom as a setting for the Senior Re- ception. Crystal chandeliers suspended from the ceiling cast a soft glow upon the elaborately draped room. Heavenly blue flame roping marked off the dance floor where the many couples danced to the music of Tommy Masso. Potted palms and glittering drapes set off the receiving line and formed a scintillating background for the dancers and guests. Miss Hope V. Carey, faculty adviser, was in charge of this memorable affair. Seventy six COMMITTEE There were many reasons for the enthusiasm evidenced by the ,49ers and their friends at the junior Prom. Chief among these was the festive appearance of the gym with its pretty festoons, its attractive ceiling of pink streamers, and white trellisses adorned with colonial bouquets. This pleasing background for the '49ers' major social function of the year was planned and arranged with the help of Miss Dorothy Johnson, faculty adviser and member of the Art Depart- ment. JUNIOR PROM and SENIOR RECEPTION ART COMMITTEES The junior Prom Art Committee, headed by Dolores Kay and Ruth De- shaies as co-chairmen, transformed the gym into a gay flower garden for all who attended the prom. As the Redjfzcleet went to press, the Senior Reception Art Committee, direct- ed by Dolores Kay, were still planning a delightful surprise for the '49ers for their outstanding social event of the year. CAP and GOWN COMMITTEE At the beginning of the year the seniors nominated ten students as candi- idates for the Cap and Gown Committee. The six receiving the greatest number of votes were Dolores Bogdan, chairman, Frances Motyl, Leon Boghossiaan, Harold MacKenzie, Bob Baldani, and Dick Buba. Mr. John Masterson was the faculty ad- viser. This group took the measurements of the seniors for caps and gowns, decid- ed upon the color, black as usual, and made arrangements for the immediate and safe return of the regalia to the ren- tal company. Sex entx sevtn Wilbur Seventy-eight Student Council Under the supervision of the faculty adviser, Mr. John S. Masterson, the Student Council has met and planned various activities and school improvements. Its purpose is to give voice to student ideas and thus co-ordinate teacher and pupil relationship. When President Richard Buba taps his gavel, the group begins to work, pre- senting new ideas, suggesting improvements, and voting upon issues. For in- stance, crowded cafeteria conditions caused many complaints, so the councilors planned a new arrangement of the tables to relieve the congestion in some parts of the room. After the resignation of our former principal, Mr. Henry J. Winters, the Council arranged for his portrait to be placed in the main office. Following the suggestion of our new principal, Mr. james McGeough, the members voted to hold their sessions after school instead of during school classes. Every year, the Student Council adorns the first floor corridor with a huge Christmas tree, replete with bright-colored balls, electric lights, Santa Clauses, and sparkling snow. This gay attraction supplies the Christmas atmosphere and imbues both teachers and pupils with a real Christmas spirit. It is an annual task for the Council to sell ice cream bars at the basketball games. This is a profitable venture, for the fans, hoarse from cheering, are eager to purchase the cooling refreshments. Now, at the end of our school year, the Student Council deserves praise for its efforts to present our complaints and to satisfy our wishes. Dramatic Society As the curtain closed on the Dramatic Society's first presentation of the year, a burst of applause resounded from the audience, showing the hard-working cast and crew that their efforts had not been in vain. The play, You Can't Take It With Youu, depicted the unusual antics of an unusual family, the Sycamores. Amid the confusion, created by a budding ballerina and an energetic scientist, romance bloomed between Alice Sycamore and Tony, her bossls son. The senior play, Double Door , was the story of domineering Victoria Van Bret. Strongly opposed to the marriage of her brother, Rip, to Anne Darrow, she did everything in her power to make the bride unhappy. Nothing stood in her way-not even murder! Postponement of the play due to a belated blizzard seemed to inspire the well-prepared cast to even greater efforts. All gave especially line performances. joan Cavanaugh, in her first role, more than did justice to a very demanding part. It was a thoroughly satisfying evening. At the Drama Festival, held this year at East High, the ,49ers offered the fairy tale, Hansel and Gretelf' Ruth Deshaies as the baby-sitter told her small charges the famous story of the brother and sister and their adventure with a wicked witch. A gay musical comedy, School Days , brought the drama season of East to a close. Members from all classes participated in this f1nal offering which was written and directed by Miss Hope V. Carey, Director of Dramatics. Eighty-three Sai W E s E:EI-HND THE SCENES ry, 1 QQ A , :a-A-5-Wwe.-Ng, W, ,ff AN- Y ff 'R Af gx K, if X gl 3 m ,f-0'-Q., 'Q Q 558. 'Q pg Q V W X 0.3 xxx. . Z nk ! John Collins, Francis Langtagne. Basketball Team With such stellar performers as Co-Captains Ray Rossi and Dick Buba, with first-stringers Fred Lennon, George Sonntag, Frank Lantagne, and the dependable reserve, Vin Varone, the Redjacket quintet of '49 rolled up a record of 17 vic- tories and 6 losses, and finished in third place in a closely knit Class A race. The 'jackets also captured the Pawtucket city championship by downing St. Raphael twice and by splitting with the state champions, West High School. The '49ers brought a hustling and inspired squad into the state play-offs, and in the quarter finals romped over the defending champions, Westerly High School. However, in the semi-finals the 'Jackets were nipped by La Salle Academy, 36-34, in a hotly disputed game. In the consolation round the Easterners finished in a blaze of glory by trouncing De La Salle 73-48. East derived more solace when Ray Rossi, who was also elected to the All- State Team, receiving the Outstanding Player Award for his brilliant display in the La Salle game. Looking in retrospect at the '49 quintet, we acknowledge the excellent work Coach Arthur Nooney has done with the team which almost reached the state finals. Whittier had some fitting words to offer on the subject: Of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these-it might have been. SCHEDULE E.H.S. OPP. In the election for captain, three lettermen were tied for the position, so Walter Bliss, Ted Kulis, and Richard Blais were allowed to share the honor. When the grid-men were informed that they had been placed in Class A, they were instantly aware of the difficult schedule they must face. Even as they entered the field of play, defeat was staring them hard in the faceg yet they carried on with a spirit and pugnacity that merited the praise and respect of their fellow classmen. The fact that the score board indicates few victories is not of such great importance. The good sportsmanship and the graciousness with which the '49ers met their defeats we remember and admire. TRACK East's outlook for the coming track season is very bright, due to the fact that many veterans are returning. Over a dozen experienced seniors and several tal- ented juniors will form the foundation of the team. This year the boys hope to avenge the narrow defeat suffered at the Clipper Relays in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, last year. GOLF TEAM Left to rigblx L. Boghos- sian. R. Baron. R. Loud. f A XV. Kelly. 'TENNIS Le!! to right: B. Johnston, K. Douglas. A. Little. R. Zalusky. GOLF With such experienced performers as Bob Loud, Ray Baron, and Leon Boghossian, the East High golfers should be one of the leading contenders for the state championship. Last year, under the able coaching of Jack Reed, the team compiled a record of 7 victories and l defeat. As the Red- jacket goes to press we can only make a prediction, based on past performances, of a bright future. We TENNIS TEAM Although the East netmen had not fared too well in league competition dur- ing the past two years, the T49 squad hoped for a better year with three first- team men back for the season. The jack- ets used Oak Hill Tennis Courts as their base of operations. At this writing, the coach of the squad had not been appointed. Even though their record was on the lean side, the East Tennis Team played with the characteristic '49er spirit to win. nm it -'fi S' .- t 'O , A A l . ...., H... Baseball Team For the past three years the names of baseball and Chet Nichols have been synonymous. East's brilliant player, now with the Boston Braves, left a place dif- ficult, if not impossible, to fill. Bob Rothwell, Al Hallal, Bill Dolan, and Spinny Rounds, all of whom had seen considerable service last year, were the boys who would have to endeavor to make up for Nichols' loss. They were the candidates who answered Coach Alex Nahigian's call for aspirants for either battery position. In addition, there were three regulars from the '48 campaign who could be counted on for dependable and creditable performances. Ray Rossi, short stop, sec- ond baseman Tatty Nahabedian, and outfielder George Boyce, veterans all, would form the nucleus for the '49 team. As the Redjacket went to press the schedule had not started, but with the players mentioned above and with a few new recruits Coach Nahigian hoped to have a team that would duplicate the highly successful record of '-48. Swimming Team This year the East High swimmers, under the able coaching of Max Read, performed even more brilliantly than ever. Throughout the entire season they showed themselves to be so well-balanced and consistant, that they quite handily won all but one of their dual meets. This lone loss was in the initial meet at La Salle Academy. East later gained revenge in their own pool with a thrilling 46 to 29 victory which was not decided until we had won both the medley and the 200- yard freestyle relays. By winning eleven straight dual meets, the East High mermen compiled an average of 47 points per meet against 26 for the opposition. One unusual fact about this great team was that only four seniors were on it. They were jack Campbell, Ken Douglas, Bob Brown, and Tom Gaughan. Of these four boys probably the most outstanding was jack Campbell, who smashed the school record in the breaststroke. Other prominent stars were the following: Ralph Brisco, Joe MsDonald, Lou Brierly, Bob O'Brien, and Frank Kouble, free- stylers and medley swimmers, Milt Franklin, a great backstrokerg and our sopho- more star, Ed Carberry, diver. Undoubtedly, the climax of the season was the winning of the Lt. George Meehan Meet. After just being nosed out of first place in both the Brown Inter- scholastics and the New England Interscholastics by Portland, Maine, East came back in this last meet and decisively defeated all competitors, including their arch- rivals of Rhode Island, La Salle. With this successful season to their credit, the remaining juniors and sopho- mores looked ahead optimistically toward next year. Five senior, five junior, and nine sophomore teams, which were divided into four leagues, took part, playing Round Robin games. The sophomores then played Grace Dempsey's winning senior team, losing this time to the undefeated upperclass- men. In the inter- class meets the juniors triumphed over the Seniors by winning two out of three contests. The East girls brought the sea- son to a successful close by twice defeat- ing their city rivals of West High School in their annual competition. BADMIN TON Badminton was again the most popular sport for girls at East High. This activity, which had a larger turn- out than any other, was open to girls of all classes. Sophomores played on Thurs- days after schoolg juniors and Seniors, Tuesdays. .Any girl who wished to do so might referee. An incentive to better playing was the annual school Badmin- ton Championship, which took place in April. This contest was open to singles and doubles players. First place winners received racketsg runners up, birdies and cases. The Redjacket deadline had to be met before the play-offs were held, so the final results could not be recorded. ATHLETIC COUNCIL At the end of each season the Ath- letic Council, composed of the principal, the athletic director, faculty adviser, and three students appointed by the direc- tor, meet to devise plans which will faci- litate a smooth-running athletic pro- gram. The decisions of this group are not too well known to the school as a whole, but they contribute much to the well-organized sports schedule at East. The council suggests and votes upon changes of policy in the method of pre- senting letters and formulates ideas to stimulate interest in athletics. THE MEMBERS of the Classbook Board discovered, through many, many hours of work, that the layout and final completion of a book like the Redjacket is an enormous un- dertaking. Help and co-operation come from many sources. To all who did give assistance in any way, we of the staff wish to extend our heartiest thanks and appreciation. To the following we are especially grateful: Miss Elizabeth T. Howes, our faculty ad- viser, for her careful guidance and constant encouragement.
