Gain Knowledge of the Unknown Through Progress Mr. Yount is explaining the various parts of the microscope to Vicki Ramirez. Besides teaching biology, he is a part-time counselor and heads the Science Department. Cutting open worms and frogs is just a portion of the fun biology students have each year as they attempt to dissect some obscene (?) creatures. Biology is the study of living organisms of plants and animals. In chemistry class, students learn how chemical changes occur, study elements and compounds, and conduct various experiments. The most advanced science course at East is physics, which is a study about the physical effects of energy on matter. Mr. Sloan is explaining the method of dissecting a frog to Craig Cochran and Larry Spain. In his eighth year of teach- ing at East, he has a full schedule teach- ing biology classes. At East for eleven years is Mr. Johns, who teaches chemistry. He also is active in instructing a Saturday science class. Performing one of the tasks of a science teacher, Mr. Peterson is shown helping Dennis Winegar with a project. He also conducts a Saturday science class. A very busy man is Mr. Johnson, who not only teaches biology and boys ' physical education, but also coaches sophomore bas- ketball and assists in varsity football. Actively coaching both wrestling and sophomore football, along with teaching biology, is Mr. Hand. He has been teaching at East for nine years. — 13—

Students Meet a Challenge with a New Perspective Geometry and second year algebra are being taught this year by Mrs. Kingsbury. This is her second year of teaching at East. Mr. Simonsen is teaching algebra and geometry. This is his third year at East High School. Very busy in the Math Department is Mr. Storer, who teaches advanced algebra, trigonometry, and probabilities and statistics. He has been teaching at East for eleven years and is sponsor of Computer Club. With our booming Atomic Age today, math has become a vital subject. It has become more important in recent years to obtain a broader knowledge in this area. Courses of higher math offered at East are trigonometry, and probabilities and statistics. Also offered in the Math Department are both first and second year algebra, and geometry. v A Mr. Huff, who is in his first year of teaching at East, teaches both geometry and algebra. Mrs. Kingsbury helps Laureen Hall solve a geometry problem while the rest of the class attempt a solution. 12—

Understanding the World of Art Scenery for plays, publicity posters, and occasion cards sent out by the school are a few of the extra services performed by East High ' s Art Department. At East, first-year art involves simple drawing and design. Second year is based on color theory and painting. Third year deals with advanced drawing, print making, sculpture, advanced painting, and com- mercial techniques. Art is given only for those interested in wanting to develop their skills through the fine opportunities offered. Miss Skarshaug heads the Art Department and co-sponsors the Art Club. She is shown helping Sharon Manual with a crafts project. Beginning his teaching career is Mr. Nicolet. He teaches fine arts and is also co-adviser of the Art Club. Students Create Beauty with Music Our Music Department adds much to the spirit of East High. We are grateful to the band for displaying their fine talents at basketball and football games as well as our pep assemblies. This year our choir gave performances at several junior high schools, the Nativity, and other school assemblies. The highlight of the choir ' s performances this year was Rodgers and Hammerstein ' s musical, ' The King and I. Mr. Mahaffey directs the Instrumental Music Department and acts as adviser for the Majorettes, Flag Twirlers, and Drill Team. He also was co-direc- tor of our school musical. Heading the Vocal Music Depart- ment is Mrs. Lutz. Her vocal music classes include A Cappella Choir, Girls ' Glee Club, and Boys ' Glee Club. She was also the co-director of our school musical, The King and I. Skills Prepare Us for the Future The general objective of our Homemaking Depart- ment is to develop creative ability and understanding in running an efficient home. In cooking classes, girls learn basic steps in kitchen planning, management of time, nutrition, and proper preparation of foods. Learning to use patterns and to work with different types of fabrics is the main task of the sewing classes. Home management and family living classes em- phasize areas of study in management of time, money, energy, personality improvement, preparation for mar- riage, marriage itself, and child care. Miss Grabill, who has been with us for six years, is helping Terry Hardenbrook with a homemaking project. Home management, family living, and cooking are taught by Mrs. Abramson, who is with us for her first year. — 14—
