A young new face around EHS this Sophomore and junior English arc taught year is Mi ' s. White, who teaches both by Mr. Buxton, who is a new teacher at sophomore and junior English. EHS this year. Creativity— A Main Objective Clear expression of thought in writing and speaking is neeessary for one to obtain success in our modern society. Our English classes help us to develop skills and ability through the study of grammar, composition, American Literature, and English Literature. One of the main objectives of our English Department is creativity. To express our thoughts effectively is of primary importance, for we will soon be members of a democracy. Language is the most im- portant tool in communicating. If we do not know how to use this tool effeciently, our future success will be limited. The way in which we use our language thus can make or destroy our public image. Carole Zeiger, Linda Nesja and Linda Reed are deeply engrossed in listening to Mr. Christian ' s remarks on the senior section of the yearbook. He is head of the English department, teaches junior English, and advises the Quill and Scroll staffs. Explaining sentence structure to one of her sophomore English classes is Mrs. Hai. who is teaching here at East for her third year. In her fourth year here at East, Mrs. Mastin is pictured teaching her junior tele- vision English classes. With us for the flint year is Mi ' s. Kicck. This is Mr. Samuelson ' s second year teach- ing World History here at EHS. This year he has also taken the responsibility of acting as Student Council adviser. A veteran of 26 years of teaching at East is Mr. Gewerth, who is chairman of the Social Studies Department. He teaches American Problems, Economics, and Commercial Geography. Shown here with Mr. Gewerth is Sharon Michael. Teaching American History and American Problems for the ninth year at East is Mr. Tannatt. Mr. Tannatt also sponsors the Lettermen ' s Club. Besides teaching World History for the last four years at East, Mr. Fleming is in charge of Audio-visual Aids and is co-ordinator for the Model U.N. activities. Dividing his duties between teaching Ameri- can History and counseling is Mr. Richard Akerman, pictured here with John Combs. Mr. Akerman is also assistant basketball coach. At East for the ninth year is Mr. De- Mouth, who teaches American History. He also coaches the girls ' and boys ' tennis teams and heads the operation of the concession stands for the P-TA. Here for the thirteenth year is Mr. Neal, who teaches American Problems. He also exi ertly manages our athletic program. —9—

Mr. Oxenreider, in his eighth year, teaches junior and sophomore English. He is also the coach for track and cross country- Miss Arnold teaches senior English and advises Travel Club. She is pictured with Craig Hamilton, who is explaining an English project to the class. Teaching the new course, Humanities, is Mr. Griffin, who is at East for his first year. Presenting some finer points of grammar to her senior English class is Miss Jones, who has been at EHS for the past five years. Miss Whitford is shown helping Jerry Logsdon with scenery. She teaches speech, drama, and radio and sponsors the AFS Club and Drama Club. 9L 1 Discussing another assignment with her class is Mrs. Schrage. This is her first year at East, where she teaches eleventh grade English. Along with advising the Pep Club and German Club, Mr. Caltvedt, who is at EHS for his second year, teaches sopho- more English and German. Senior English is taught by Miss Langen- feld.
