Facing the Modern World Understanding our modern world is of exceptional importance in every person ' s life. To aid in this under- standing, East High requires three years of social science for each student. For the sophomores, study is con- tinued from junior high with World History. Junior study is based on American History in preparation for the contemporary affairs studied in college. As for the seniors, study is concerned with American Problems and Economics on a local, national, and international basis. These courses are required because of a necessity to develop a clear knowledge for not only World History, but also for the democracy in which we live. We believe that to know history is to know yourself. Mr. Gulick is not only busy teaching American Problems and Economics, but also advising Student Court, assisting with Pep Club, and coaching Z Squad basketball. He is shown here supervising our Student Center. V 7 9 An East High School faculty member for four years, Mr. Cowles is presently teaching World History to EHS sopho- mores. Teaching American History is Mr. Holm, who has been at East High School for eight years. Currently teaching American Problems and Economics here at East is Mr. Schakel. A young new face around EHS this Sophomore and junior English arc taught year is Mi ' s. White, who teaches both by Mr. Buxton, who is a new teacher at sophomore and junior English. EHS this year. Creativity— A Main Objective Clear expression of thought in writing and speaking is neeessary for one to obtain success in our modern society. Our English classes help us to develop skills and ability through the study of grammar, composition, American Literature, and English Literature. One of the main objectives of our English Department is creativity. To express our thoughts effectively is of primary importance, for we will soon be members of a democracy. Language is the most im- portant tool in communicating. If we do not know how to use this tool effeciently, our future success will be limited. The way in which we use our language thus can make or destroy our public image. Carole Zeiger, Linda Nesja and Linda Reed are deeply engrossed in listening to Mr. Christian ' s remarks on the senior section of the yearbook. He is head of the English department, teaches junior English, and advises the Quill and Scroll staffs. Explaining sentence structure to one of her sophomore English classes is Mrs. Hai. who is teaching here at East for her third year. In her fourth year here at East, Mrs. Mastin is pictured teaching her junior tele- vision English classes. With us for the flint year is Mi ' s. Kicck. Be»ideu leaching sophomore English, sin- also advises the new Creative Writing Club.
