In Memoriam . . . MR. GREGORY East has had many fine teachers; one teacher dedicated to East High was Charles E. Gregory, who was stricken by a fatal heart attack October 16. Mr. Gregory received his bachelor ' s degree at William Penn College and his master ' s at Drake. At East he coached wrestling and assisted with football for many years, besides teaching history. Mr. Gregory was most dedicated to his students. He taught students to think and to defend their be- liefs. Although oftentimes he took the opposite view, which would irritate students, they learned valu- able lessons. He was known for his motto: I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it. Devoted to the East Des Moines Kiwanis Club, of which he was president, he created East High ' s Key Club and boosted the Spotlight Parade. Surviving are his mother; his wife; two sons, Donald and Charles R.; and two daughters, Mrs. J. T. Hayes, and Mary Jo, a senior at Valley High. Standing for East High spirit, and the right to freedom of expression, Mr. Gregory will be long re- membered by those who knew him well.
