3 or Jlie Service JJumanltp Hast High School has won the city championship in football eleven times in the last twenty-five years, five in succession. In 1941 East entered into the Big Seven football Conference, now known as the Big Six. The year 1947 marked the beginning of baseball at East High. Mr. Goodwin, math teacher, was East ' s first baseball coach. That same year a group of aggressive men decided East High needed its own stadium. The East Des Moines Kiwanis began the Spotlight Parade. In only fifteen years the Spotlight, under die direction of Miss Sylpha Snook, has built our stadium, purchased an organ for the school and many other wonderful things. The Spotlight Parade brings the largest audience of the year to the KRNT Theater, proof of the wonderful organization of East Higrfs alumni. Along with our stadium, in 1953 our new addition was begun under the direction of the architects Weth- erell and Harrison. In the past twenty-five years many things have been added to East High School. The Majorettes, Flag Twirlers, girl cheerleaders, and the Scarlet Steppers were all organized. In 1961 the school crowned its first Alumni Queen. Miss Dixie Lovell reigned over East. Miss Carol Haney, our present queen, was elected at the annual Alumni Assembly, in the fall of 1961. 1 1 The desire for school activities brought a beautiful stadium, the thrill of competition developed athletics, and the desire for people to be free •inutfht men to fight. ears ♦ ♦♦♦♦♦♦♦ Fast High was founded in 1861, moved into its present building on May 17, 1912. The motto. For The Service of Humanity, was submitted by Charles CummingS in response to a eon- test for the most appropriate motto. To describe the building, it is significant to note that all the entrances are patterned alter old classic models. The front entrance is patterned alter the north portico of the Erechtheum; the northeast door from the Tower of Winds; the southwest from the Parthenon; and the southeast from the Temple of Neptune, Paestum. The architects were Proudfoot, Bird, and Rawson. East High is truly a masterpiece of architecture. The ivy at the front of the building was donated b Vincent Starzinger in 1915. Miss May Goodrell was an active part of East for over 65 years. To her, East High will always owe a lasting debt of gratitude. In 1894 Miss Millicent Cuplin, a teacher at East, was successful in having football adopted as a school sport A winner never quits, a quitter never wins. This is the best way to describe the people of Lee Township. They knew what they wanted and worked for it . East High School. Some of the tradition and spirit of East High was developed early in the long history of the school. It took many people many years to establis East High at the top of the ranks of all schools. MR. D. Q. WILLIAMS, Principal Mr. D. Q. Williams is a man of great ability and ambition. Because of these virtues, he has been of great value to East High. Upon graduation from Columbia University, he taught in the physical education department at Boone. Shortly after he came to East as a coach, Mr. Williams served as vice-principal before becoming principal. Helping Mr. Williams is Mr. Wendell Webb, vice-principal and boys ' ad- viser. He assists boys with any problems that may arise. Mrs. lone T. Baal, the girls ' adviser, supervises the senior activities, and gives a helping hand to the girls. Many rewards have come from the fine services these three administrators have given, not only to the school, but also to each student and faculty member. — 4 —
