Heme Economies Department 1 , Mrs. Bell has part of her Hamemaking VI class gathered around a table, discussing a reading assignment. The department of home economics determines the future years of housewives. It is a wonderful asset to be able to sew, cook, and keep house. Students learn these skills in this department. At the first of the semester, students learn the fundamen- tals of being a good housewife, cook, and seamstress, and later apply them by practice. For the first time at East High, the boys are taking a course in family relations. In this course, the boys can learn more of what makes a good home and happy family. The teachers in this department are Mrs. Bell, teaching family relations, Miss Grabill, teaching sewing and tailoring, and Miss Wetzstein, teaching cooking and home management. Carol McKay and Janet Anderson are sewing efficiently on the dresses they are making in homemoking. The girls in this picture are showing the different steps in pre- paring a meal. Physical Education Department A The ability for our wonderful athletic teams comes from the physical education department. This department not only teaches our boys and girls the skills in sports, but it also teaches sportsmanship, Such sports taught in physical education are volleyball, basketball, baseball, football, deck tennis, badminton, and trampoline. Another part of the physical education department is swimming. Students may take swimming instead of gym. In swimming, students are taught different strokes, diving, and synchronized swimming. Teachers in this department are Miss Greufe, teaching gym, Miss Spencer, teaching gym and swimming, Mr. Baeth, teaching gym and swimming, and Mr. Rump, teaching gym. Miss Greufe and one of her classes are discussing the steps in playing a game of badminton. The boys in this swimming class are learning to use the kick board, which pro- vides a lot of fun in swimming classes. -13-
