Music Department Small vocal groups ploy an important part in the music department. Here, one of the groups is practicing with Miss Guenther. The band, one of the sections in the music department, is here practicing in uniform. Department el One of the students in crafts class is learning the steps in using a weaving machine. Two of these students are working on posters while the other two are working with wood. The music department consists of two parts-instru- mental and vocal. The instrumental part of this department includes classes in band and orchestra. This semester, members of the band have been getting ready for their perform- ance at the annual Spotlight Parade. The vocal part of this department includes classes in Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs, Mixed Chorus, A Cappella Choir, Chorus l and II, and vocal groups. The performances of the vocal and instrumental groups are numerous and include many different occa- sions, such as the Memorial Day program, Spotlight Parade, Baccalaureate and Graduation services, Drake Relays Parade, and school assemblies. Miss Guenther is the instructor in the vocal classes, Mr. Engebretson is the instructor in the instrumental classes. Arts and Crafts The department of arts and crafts offers an oppor- tunity for students to discover their fields of interest. This department offers six semesters of art and six se- mesters of crafts. The department includes painting, sculpting, letter- ing, designing, and wood carving. Duties of this de- partment include illustrations for the Scroll and Quill the cover for the Quill, scenery for the school plays posters and signs announcing coming activities, and pro- gram covers. The skills learned in this department help students not only in their jobs but also in college and business. The teachers in this department include Mr. Hiatt, teaching art, Miss Lundberg, teaching crafts and artg and Miss Skarshaug, teaching crafts. 1 Two students in the art class are working at the laboratory in the art room with block printing. ..12...

Commercial De The adding machine is an important instrument in bookkeeping. Paul Bell and Phyllis Bennett are demonstrating it. The commercial department plays o very important part in the lives of many students. ln this department, they learn the fundamentals of typing, shorthand, book- keeping, arithmetic, and law. As a result, the students have enough training to go out in the business world without further schooling. This semester, there are eleven instructors in the com- mercial department. These instructors are Mr. Biddle, teaching commercial law and bookkeeping, Mr. Jarchow, instructing distributive education, merchandising, and acting as Distributive Education Supervisor, Mr. Mauk, teaching bookkeeping and salesmanship, Mr. Pieres, teaching commercial arithmetic, commercial geography, and bookkeeping, Mr. Springate, teaching bookkeeping, Miss Elwood, teaching typing and shorthand, Mrs. Hous- partment Practice is a must to good typing. Here, students are prac- ticing in their typing class. holder, teaching typing and shorthand, Mrs. McGillivray, teaching typing, Miss Nelson, teaching shorthand and typing, Miss Soutter, teaching typing, and Mr. Wanek, teaching shorthand and typing, Industrial Arts Department The industrial arts department is very popular as well as important among the boys at East High School. ln auto mechanics, the boys learn the parts ot the auto- mobile, how the automobile runs, and how to repair it. ln mechanical drawing, the classes have been making plans for the building ot their own homes. There are six semesters of woodworking available. In Woodworking l, ll, and III, the student learns the funda- mental skills in tools, machine woodworking, and the turning lathe. Woodworking IV, V, and VI provide tur- ther experience in hand woodworking and machine wood- working. These students are getting ready to go out on the roads to learn safe driving. In driver's training, the students learn how to drive and keep control ot the car under all conditions. They also learn all of the rules and laws of driving. The teachers for these courses are Mr. Bergman, Mr. Martin, Mr. Mommer, Mr. Rasmussen, Mr. Tullis, Mr. McAdam, and Mr. Sargent. This boy is learning the different parts of the cor ond how to repair them.

Heme Economies Department 1 , Mrs. Bell has part of her Hamemaking VI class gathered around a table, discussing a reading assignment. The department of home economics determines the future years of housewives. It is a wonderful asset to be able to sew, cook, and keep house. Students learn these skills in this department. At the first of the semester, students learn the fundamen- tals of being a good housewife, cook, and seamstress, and later apply them by practice. For the first time at East High, the boys are taking a course in family relations. In this course, the boys can learn more of what makes a good home and happy family. The teachers in this department are Mrs. Bell, teaching family relations, Miss Grabill, teaching sewing and tailoring, and Miss Wetzstein, teaching cooking and home management. Carol McKay and Janet Anderson are sewing efficiently on the dresses they are making in homemoking. The girls in this picture are showing the different steps in pre- paring a meal. Physical Education Department A The ability for our wonderful athletic teams comes from the physical education department. This department not only teaches our boys and girls the skills in sports, but it also teaches sportsmanship, Such sports taught in physical education are volleyball, basketball, baseball, football, deck tennis, badminton, and trampoline. Another part of the physical education department is swimming. Students may take swimming instead of gym. In swimming, students are taught different strokes, diving, and synchronized swimming. Teachers in this department are Miss Greufe, teaching gym, Miss Spencer, teaching gym and swimming, Mr. Baeth, teaching gym and swimming, and Mr. Rump, teaching gym. Miss Greufe and one of her classes are discussing the steps in playing a game of badminton. The boys in this swimming class are learning to use the kick board, which pro- vides a lot of fun in swimming classes. -13-
