From the large number of designs submitted, that of Eugene Gray was chosen by the vote of the student body. It was considered especially fitting since he used as a motif the oak leaf in recognition of the admiration East High students have for the native oaks on their campus. The cornerstone, laid by Miss May Goodrell on January I8, l9ll, contains such arti- cles as a copy of the Bible, an American flag, four editions of the Quill, an East High pen- nant, three records of East High cheers, pictures of the l909 and l9lO football teams, a return slip, a tardy card, a warning card, and an admit card.
