EOE THE SERVICE 0E HUM l Y Eive Big, Little Words Set Pattern ior Desire To Help Others in World c These five little words mean East High is doing its best to help everyone in the world. Tradition and school spirit have had a lot to do with this idea. All l,384 students and 48 teachers and 4 advisors are behind East High in everything we do. Tradition be- gan in l806 at Bird school, then moved to Webster in l877. ln l89l it moved to the old East High on the corner at East Twelfth Street and Court Avenue. Then, in l9l2, the present building became the home of East High and its tradition and school spirit. East High won its first trophy in l895 at a track meet. The colors red and black were chosen in l894 when our first football team was organized. Our school song was written in l92O and has never been changed. Our school spirit is a spirit of co-operation and self-reliance which characterizes East High, whether on the field or in the classroom, it is an inheritance handed down from our alumni. lt is up to us to keep that spirit marching on, Standing in line for bus checks or game tickets? Looks empty but there are a lot of ghosts in here. Pep assembly. . . clap, clap. . . Having a private party or can we join you? clap, clap . . . clap, clap. --5-. Lowell Kramme has consented to take time out from his painting long enough to accom- pany us on our expedition. Here he comes now in his Cadillac. Hop in, gang! Let's go! Passing through the countryside we see Nancy Russell and her hubby, that rich farmer she met at Iowa State, taking life easy while the hired hands, Charles Heller, Eddie Swim, and Donald Cooper tackle the chores. As we near the town of Snooseville we no- tice a large crowd of screaming females. We soon discover the source-Martin Terrell and Neal Schattauer, now famous movie idols, sur- rounded by ardent fans. Here come the effi- cient police force, Darrell Baker, Jim Cole- man, and Gayle Burgett to break up the riot. The truont officer, Dick Kramme, leads the girls back to school where we meet the prin- cipal, Karl Eggerssg boys' adviser, Bob Jones, and girls' adviser, Wilma Thornton. Presently we feel the need for nourishment, so we proceed to Griffith's Diner where Shirley serves us some of her famous coffee. Before long we are stricken with an acute case of indigestion. Could be Shirley is drumming up business for Ronnie Trotter, now known as the friendly undertaker , or maybe she buys groceries from town grocer Don Wolfson- wholesale, of course. Soon the ambulance arrives, driven by Pat Hudson. We are taken to the City Hospital where we are admitted for treatment by head nurses Barbara Turner and Phyllis Larson- How did they ever graduate from college? Driving away from the hospital, we see a fire truck and decide to follow it. We follow it to the water front where smoke is pouring from the windows of a small shack. Karen Shepherd, editor of the city newspaper, is there to cover the story. The capable fire fighters, Ronald Jones, Sidney McQuarry, and Preston Duncan soon discover it was all a false alarm. It was only those two mad scientists, Ronald Sevde and John Bradlee, trying to discover a formula for women's face powder and lipstick which doesn't contain one certain element. lt seems that Hurless Yelick, that famous comedian, is allergic to this certain element and breaks out after every date. Too bad, huh? After so much excitement we decided on some entertainment to relax our nerves. We were met at the theater by ushers George Eldridge and Don Bell who seated us near the front. The first number on the program was sung by Patricia Sonderleiter, a now famous Metropolitan Opera star. The next number was superbly rendered by Jon Paderewski Spong. The last number was a pantomime given by Kolleen Kennedy. Leaving the theater we ran into Streets Commissioner, Aivars Pelds, Finance Commis- sioner, Cora Strong, and Garbage Collector, Carrol Askland. We gossip a while and learn that town dentist Don Olsen is moving his quarters to the outskirts of town as a result of complaints from city dwellers about the screams and groans from his office. Well, time is running out and so must we. We feel that everything has turned out just as we might have prophesied it would, and by the way we are not one bit disappointed. A hall monitor can usually be recognized by his red and white badge inscribed, 'East High Monitor.' These monitors should be not only recognized but respected. It is advisable and helpful to have the proper pink pass properly signed when going through the halls before school and during classes. On every first and third Wednesday of each month the mixed clubs of East High meet. These are social groups such as the Latin, Spanish, and Shakespearean clubs. On every second and fourth Wednesday of each month the boys' and girls' clubs meet. Such clubs are Modern Miss, High-Y, Philo- mathean, Junior and Senior Zetagathean, and Chess and Checkers. The progress and management of the clubs are chiefly dependent upon the club presi- dents. Along with the honor of holding the president's office is the great responsibility of organizing many interesting and amusing activities. The clubs usually elect new offi- cers for each new semester. HOUSEWIVES AT EHS Many girls in East High have the opportunity to learn the techniques of good housekeeping. There are twelve classes in the various phases ranging from the basic cooking and sewing knowledge to problems of raising children. These courses are an excellent basis for girls who are going to major in Home Economics in college or set up housekeeping after they graduate. Both T.D.'s which were made in the third quarter of the game, were followed up with two suc- cessful place-kicks by Fred Lucas. EAST 40, DOWLING 6 Stamina, speed, and stability accounted for Lee Township's overwhelming victory in the sec- ond game of the season. East's six touchdowns, two of which were made by Herk Camp- bell, came on running plays from scrimmage. Other tallies were made by Jack Terrell, Bob Peel, Wayne Brooks, and Mike Car- penter. Conversions Cplace kicksl by Fred Lucas increased the Scar- let-lrish margin by four points. EAST 39, E. WATERLOO 0 Excellent defense was a ma- jor factor in helping East win its first Big Six Conference game. The Scarlets played exceptionally well, even though a heavy rain- storm was in progress throughout all four periods. Fullback Jack Terrell led the scoring record with three T.D's. Richard Tuller, Larry Forbes, and Herk Campbell each scored once. Three place-kicks by Fred Lucas were good. Fred Lucas was one of the ll boys in the state to be chosen on the all-state football team. Herk Campbell represented East on the all-state second team, and Jim Sage was chosen as tackle on the all-state third team. EAST T4, MASON CITY 0 E.D.M., for the fourth consecu- tive time, pulled a crown out of the victory bag. The Scarlets were pushed to the top of the Big Six Conference league as a result of winning this game. Lee Township's two tallies, scored in the second and third quarters of the game, were made by Wayne Brooks and Jack Ter- rell. Lucas kicked for the two additional points. EAST 19, FORT DODGE 0 The speedy Scarlets remained at the top of the Big Six Confer- ence league as a result of another successful attempt to defeat the competitor. East High's power- ful line and forceful backfield kept the Dodgers from passing their CEast'sl 30-yard line at any time during the game. Fred Lucas, Mike Carpenter, and Jack Terrell were each re- sponsible for one tally. A suc- cessful place-kick by Lucas raised the score one point higher. EAST 45, TECH 7 Drives of 27, 59, 6l, 69, 76 and 89 yards highlighted East's successful attempts for touch- downs in the second game of City Series competition. Three hun- dred seventy-four yards, 279 of which were picked up by Herk Campbell, were gained by the Scarlets during the game. Ace receiver Fred Lucas scored three times, and tail back Herk Campbell scored twice. Mike Carpenter and Donald Bell, both seniors, each scored once. Three place-kicks, two by Lucas and one by Gayle Burgett, were good. CONGRATULATIONS. COACH SAVAGE! ...4 7... EAST 20, ROOSEVELT T3 A 66-yard run by Jack Terrell highlighted the successful T.D. attempts by the speedy Scarlets. By winning this game, East be- came the first team in 29 years to capture the City Series crown a third straight time. The last third-time champion was the team of l922. Lee Township's three tallies, made by Terrell, Fred Lucas and Herk Campbell, came in the first two quarters of the game. Two out of three place-kicks by Fred Lucas were good. EAST 7, NORTH 6 History repeated itself for the first time in 30 years as the great Lee Township team completed an undefeated season. The East gridders reached the top of the ladder as a result of winning over their mighty foes in the eighth and last consecutive game. The Scarlet's touchdown, made by Wayne McLain, came in the third quarter of the battle. Mc- Lain was also responsible for the extra point. SCARLET STATISTICS Each year at the end of the football season the all-city high school team is chosen. Coaches, radio men and sports writers de- cide which eleven boys in the city have performed most outstand- ingly during the two months of combat This year, four fellows from East have been chosen. They are: End, Fred Lucas, Tackle, Gayle Burgett, Halfback, Herk Campbell, and Fullback, .lack Terrell. They'll Get There Once again the curtain rises on a victorious, hard-hitting second team. Coach Gregory and his spirited Ca- naries have reached the first goal suc- cessfully, and with the East High root- ers cheering them on, we can be sure of one more brilliant first team next year. Although this squad shows up for a tedious practice every night after school, little limelight is thrown their way. As we all know, not every one of these hopefuls will make the grade of first team next fall, but with the con- stant work under experienced super- vision going on now, it will certainly be a hard decision as to which will be the varsity material. This is really a big decision, for it means the realization of every player's dream-first team football. Unfortunately, there will, of course, be those who can't quite make the grade, but this lack of experience is replaced by plenty of spirit. SWIMMING TEAM Row 'lx Cox, Reeves i Selover, Gusfin, Wass- muth Prall- Row 2 Willidms, ' Lambert' Hockersmith, Cosner Wolfson, Row 3: Machrill, Katzman Smith, Mills, Forbes Sears, Wright, Gould Seaboch, 1 I I FALL TRACK TEAM Row 1: Hilliard, Jones, Eldridge, Tillman, Row 2: Reeves, Wil- liams, Harris, Berry, Row 3: Frazer, Haley, Bell, May, Hocker- smith. printers Spree Mike Augustine always turned out championship teams in the past, and it looks as though this year will be no ex- ception. If you have noticed boys run- ning in a long line, it is the track boys working out. The strict training rules pay off with victories and trophies. Con- gratulations, track team! Cage Monkeys Student Managers Row 'lc Tomlinson, lr- win, Boehlerg Row 2: Burgett, Manley, Row 3: Burkhart. Much credit should be given to the boys who come every night after school and hand out uniforms and equipment to the different teams. The Cage Mon- keys are hard working boys, and at the end of the year they may earn a letter. East High takes great pleasure in thank- ing these boys. .A.A. Swimming, along with juggling, tumbling, and basketball, not only aids one physically but can also give one enough points for a well-earned G.A.A. letter. The GAA. officers this semester are Betty Toney, publicity secretary, Ruth Damon, president, JoAnn Jesser, vice-president, Elizabeth Raspotnik, secretary. Physical fitness is important for girls as well as boys. Miss Spencer, the G.A.A. adviser, meets with the girls after school. These girls receive much enjoyment from G.A.A. activities. Cheerleaders The spirit of East High is always kept up because ofthe hard work and enthusiasm of the cheer- leaders. The cheerleaders are Lee McMillan, Leon Gortler, Darrell Klemme, and Larry Larson, captain. Co-operation and large crowds at the games are just what it takes to make these fellows happy. These lively lads who faithfully perform their duties through rain and snow leading East High to victory are advised by Mr. Stratton. ..54.. 25 Club Quill Allverli ing tall QUILL AD CLUB Row 2- Mullins' Brown 'Kohler Steffenson Vonderhoet Conroy Kline Polson, Kirkpatrick, Pettylohn, Jackson, Haskel, Young, Row 3 sfeddnid Sanford Pea'ker Themes, Decker, smlln, Brelen, underweedf Powell, Housby, Schuling, Allen, Bryonl, Allen, Lime, Grqnger, Heller' liow 4' Taller Williams Israel, Clark Hegwood, Erickson, Kohler, Long, Connett, Nelson, Packey, Dove, Samuelson, Gaudlneer Row 5' McCullum HLlll Williams Wright Peel Mills Heggen Shepherd Bell Anderson, Reynolds, Arolg Row 6: Sage, Peacock, Kramme' lil-lloneem gYl??l1S, Cookf Mohaffey, Moody, Trotter, Bggerss, Kramme, Nlontgomery, Gregory, Pork, Row 7: Waltmcln, Robinson, Foote IUS, c rl .
