CRCDSS CGUNTRY East High's cross country squad, through the means of hard work, came through the '48 season with flying colors. Winning three meets and placing second in the state meets, the harriers paced by George Rabbit Sullivan, individual second place winner in both state meets, worked un- der the direction of Coach Augustine who was welcomed back to the squad after several sea- sons' absence. While the cross country men receive little recognition for their labors, they feel their efforts will be repaid in the experience gained toward the spring track season. -s. SWIMMING Here are some boys who work under quite a handicap. East High's swimming team has always made a good showing in spite of the present conditions--that of poor swimming facilities. Each night after school the boys work out under their capable instructor, Mr. A. Y. Scotty Russell. During the year the boys meet teams from other schools in and out of the city. Some of the different positions on the team that a prospect may try out for are those of divers, free stylers, breast strokers, and back strokers, V se.. EQUIPMENT MANAGERS These six boys deserve the praise of the whole school. Headed by Gus Rump, the cage monkeys get the equipment ready for the various teams before practice each night and are at the games hours ahead of time to assist the coaches in any way possible. Cap- tain Albert McGill usually accompanies the teams at out-of-town games. The boys, in this way, earn their own letter and they really work hard for it. Five of them will be back next year. Phipps, a letterman, will graduate. McGill also has lettered. WRESTLING With eight returning lettermen, the Scarlet grapplers under Coach Charles Gregory are expected to have quite a successful season. Most of their '48 season was against oppo- nents in Des Moines while the '49 season will be conducted largely against Big Six oppo- nents. Wrestling takes a lot of drive and interest cn the part ot the athlete because he must work out for about three hours every night after school in a hot, musty room. However, the fellows' labors are more than repaid on road trips and in experience with the team. They are the curtain raisers at all the first team basketball games. Hard work and lots of practice every night after school make these boys what they are. They scrimmage against the first team and oftentimes give their money. The competition is really rough, and it certainly takes the know-how to stay on the squad. Some of these boys will at mid-semester them a run for probably move up since quite a few of the varsity players will graduate. They are coached by Mr. Wendell Webb and Earl Rodine, an East graduate. The Little Scar- lets are untried at the time of this writing, but they are sure to have a successful season. VARSITY BASKETBALL With a good season in prospect East High's cagers are preparing them- selves with vigor for what will prob- ably turn out to be a tough schedule. The Scarlets will have six lettermen returning for the first semester while the success of the second half of their season will depend on the abilities of such reserves as Harry West, Harold Jensen, Gene Labus, Carl Grant, and Ralph Maigaard. The returning lettermen are Walt Mickelson, Gary Perdue, Bill Jensen, Dick Fisher, Dave Worley, and Dick Phipps. The coaching staff will be headed by Wendell Webb, head football and basketball coach at East, while Earl Rodine, Scarlet alumnus, and Fred Geitz, Drake cadet, will serve as Webb's assistants.
