GIRLS' GOLF Girls' golf, in just its third year at East High, has proven itself to be quite popular around these portals. Few girls are out for this sport at this time, but a ,larger number is expected to turn out when spring comes around. Under the excellent coaching of Gus Rump, they are expected to make a fine showing, as they have before. In the fall tournament the girls placed third in competition among the other city schools. Bonnie Roderick was first among East High girls with a score of 58. June Gander's 64 was second. Ro, J0Qr7 1' M - C Ofc . Benneffiifsyl lsgmlfviefing frgrniq Eiigoj-1g,,iCiQrge,,en H ' I-U79 C Ow 2. Norma Knud- sen and Marcia Wieting were elim- inated in the second round. In the doubles competition June Gander and Nancy Sisam advanced to the semi- finals, but Carolyn Burdock and Janet Spitler were defeated in the first round of play. Five girls were on hand as reserves. One of these, Janet Spitler, IOB, saw action in the place of Marilee Good- rich. Also on the reserves were Mary Brandt, Norma Sexton, Agnes Duiste- mars, Charlotte McDaniels, and Nancy Howell. o Y semqrie, . gov' ' 'QIOQI 'tlef Moxzggdfgl? Coach Gus Rump BOYS' GOLF Under the watchful eye of Coach Augustus Rump, East High's golf' squad, through the medium of hard work and consistent training, was able to come through the fall season with average performances. The only showing the team made was during their lone meet for the city title. This all-city meet was held at, Grandview golf course which is justi llke home to our boys inasmuch as this is where they did most of their prac- ticing. The Scarlet l go fers, led by Elmoreh Collins, finished third ' in the meet.

EQUIPMENT MANAGERS These six boys deserve the praise of the whole school. Headed by Gus Rump, the cage monkeys get the equipment ready for the various teams before practice each night and are at the games hours ahead of time to assist the coaches in any way possible. Cap- tain Albert McGill usually accompanies the teams at out-of-town games. The boys, in this way, earn their own letter and they really work hard for it. Five of them will be back next year. Phipps, a letterman, will graduate. McGill also has lettered. WRESTLING With eight returning lettermen, the Scarlet grapplers under Coach Charles Gregory are expected to have quite a successful season. Most of their '48 season was against oppo- nents in Des Moines while the '49 season will be conducted largely against Big Six oppo- nents. Wrestling takes a lot of drive and interest cn the part ot the athlete because he must work out for about three hours every night after school in a hot, musty room. However, the fellows' labors are more than repaid on road trips and in experience with the team. Coach Gus Rump Row 1: Leo Brown, Jock Johnson, Richard Phipps, Row 2: John O'Hara, Ed Pagliai, Albert McGill. .122-
