EAST PLAYS RUGGED FOOTBALL SCHEDULE BEAT BEARS Completing a mediocre season against North High, the East Des Moines Scarlets fought to a i3-6 win over their cross-city rival. East's markers were made by rol- licking Dick Atkins. Scoring the first touchdown on a 65-yard jaunt in the second quarter to tie the score, he bounced back dur- ing the third quarter to roll 69 yards for the game's winning touchdown. Snowed Under East High's eleven was snowed under by the Mason City squad, 37-6. This game put Dave Wor- ley, John McClintock. Dick Phipps, and Bob Trumbo out of commission, but the boys were back in shape for the Ft. Dodge game. POWERHOUSE Powerful St. Ambrose ran and passed their way to an undisputed 26-6 victory over East in her sec- ond game of the year. The only bright spot for the Scarlets was a pass in the second quarter from West to McClintock for East's lone marker. WOW! Leading 6-0 in thefirst quar- ter, East scored four touchdowns in the second frame and three more in the last half to beat Des Moines Tech, 50-O. Fields and McGriff scored twice each. LOSING BATTLE The Scarlets fought a losing battle as Fort Dodge struck early and gave East their fourth set- back of the season, i2-O. A quarter-back sneak and run around right-end provided the Dodgers' touchdowns. A TOUGH ONE Fighting against a favored team, the Scarlets dropped a tough one to Roosevelt, 28-19. The Lee-men were in there all the way, with Atkins breaking away for a 28-yard touchdown to make the score East, 6, Roosevelt, l4. On a reverse play, Trumbo scored from Roosevelt's 7-yard line. East's third marker was made by Atkins. F I RST LOSS Failing to make their extra point, the Scarlets lost their ini- tial game of the i948 season to Lincoln, 7-6. East's only marker came in the third quarter when Trumbo scored from the six. UPSET VICTORY Led by the running of Dick Atkins and the passing of Harry- West, the Scarlet eleven won their first game of the season by upsetting East Waterloo, i3-7. Both East markers came dur- ing the first half, whereas Wa- terloo was unable to score until the third quarter when Ezzell Jef- ferson scored from the l7-yard line. l .-.mi
