It I9 true that the eldest chnld has an ad xantage over the younqer ch1ldren where clothmq is concerned because little ones must wear the made overs and hand me downs Again this does not apply to me because my slster ls the larqer I cant wear her clothes because they are too roomy but someway or other she manaqes to squeeze into mme Now you are ready to say that being the eldest I have a superlor pos1t1on when the folks are away from home but when ones sister IS red headed and has the traditional temper to match well Im just not the boss and that s all there IS to say In some homes you hear phrases llke this Now Helen you know sister Mary IS a senior thxs vear and you want to sacrifice one or two pleasures to qlve her a nice graduatton Dont you? Of course Helen doesnt but lt would never do to let people know how selfish she IS mslde So she qlves a reluctant consent and does wlthout her new dress After thlnkinq thls questlon over and over I have finally decided that m my famllv there shall be no eldest IAAE MEACHAM The Candld Camera Craze I was 1n the act of stooplng over ln order to plck up a p1ece of paper which was lylng on the qround when a stentorxan xonce bellowed Hold lt' I remamed there petrified with dlsmay fearmq a rent ID my nether garment There I qotcha came the vo1ce much quieter now and I stralghtened up to see a gleeful grm on the face of my frlend who was tw1st1ng at some qadqet 1n his hand Closer mspectton showed it to be a candid camera Suddenly I realized that he had actually taken a plcture of me ln the very act of stoopmq oxer the scrap of paper' With an indignant howl I remembered my bare leqs that were cer tamly no match for Apollos and my rather large feet which were generously splattered with a mixture of tar and cement I snatched at the lxttle infernal machine with every mten tion of smashmq it aqamst the sidewalk thus totally destroymq the source of my embarrass ment and the object of my mdlqnatlon Thus rather abruptly I was lntroduced to the worldwide hobby of photoqraphy The size of this hobby as the size of any other larqe hobby makes for numerous staqes of mterest 'I hese staqes qo from the rank amateur or dud whose most advanced attempts at photo graphy are merely to snap an occasional shutter for a friend to the most sclentlfic enthuslast w ho carries about loads of compllcated equip ment and w ho slmplv cannot take a picture un less he has determlned the time of exposure the correct focal lenqth the proper lens aperture and the many other confusmq details which are so commonplace to a person w ho has studled photoqraphy exen casually It doesnt matter where one ranks he can not possibly know all the pleasures of photo graphy untll he has delved into the mysteries of the darkroom Thls I9 a very entrancmg laboratory with red lxqhts trays bottles of ox erpow ermq darkness In conclusion I say that after you have taken your plctures made your negat1ves and utxlxzed your basement as a darkroom ln de velopmq your enlarqements you may be con sidered a full fledqed amateur photographer Iorm RALSTON Ra1n The ram of sprmq IS llke anqel s tears That fall on the face of the earth The ram of spring carries no fears But brlnqs only romance and btrth The ram of fall is like soldiers feet As they march w 1th a steady tread The ram of fall pounds on the street And carries death and dread The ram of the storm IS the wrath of the qods As thev seek their venqeance on earth The ram of the storm be Its and throbs With romance death and btrth The rim of the storm IS the ram I love Wtth its romance de ith and birth or I understand then how the One aboxe Controls our fortunes on earth BARBARA WIIITIXIER . . 1 I . , x V ' V' I' ' V K ' ' 1 I n x .
