On May 211 d we had our third animal trip to lndianola. The track squad left at 6:30 a. m. under the care of Coach Van Liew and Watsciii Metcalf. The main body of the school boarded the special train at the Rock Island cross- ing at 11 145. As we were speeding away from the city of certaintics lunches were eaten and everything was gay. West and North followed on a. separate train. The meet started promptly at 2 o'clock and every one enjoyed it from beginning to end, although we were not as successful on the track as we might have wished for. After the meet the schools scattered about the campus of the college for pic- nic suppers. Medals' were awarded in the evening at an enthusiastic meeting held in the Hopper Gymnasium. Speeches were forced from Captain Dow Byers and from John Evans, Weslz High's leader. The trip home was a pleasant close to a most successful and happy day. We arrived ,in the city about 9 :45 p. rn. The Des Moines College quartettc gave an enjoyable recital on May 14. It was one of the best we have had this year and we hope that next year the school may have another visit from the same organization. 5? The end of this track season brings to a close one ot the most brilliant careers in state high school ath- letics. For four years Dow Byers has been one of East High's best athletes both on the gridiron and track. A member of the football and track teams for four years, he was captain. of them both in his senior year. ln Qlfootball he played left halil'back, in' which pos- ition he was a terror to the opposing side because of his broken lield running, his punt- ing. and aecura,te forward passing. in 1912 he was awarded the cap- taincy of the mythical all state high school eleven on which he has been given a position the past three years. In track Dow has been a wonderzful per- iformer, taking part at some time in every event except the two distance runs, yet specializing in the broad jump and the low hurdles Altogether Dow Byers is probably the most versatile athlete who ever wore the Red and Black. He has made an en- viable record in high school. We wish him success in college. TT. V all DRAKE RELAY CARNIVAL. VVith the track in -splendid condition, Drake University held its fourth annual relay carnival. April 1.9. A large crowd was present to sec new records hung up in each division. lin the l1igh school di- vision West High made a clean sweep and at the same time established new records in each event. In the half mile relay we were lucky enough to draw the pole, but there our luck stopped. For, after completing the first two-twenty, with a lead of about two yards over the rest of the field, Captain Dow Byers stepped on Mae Byers' foot, spiking him and causing him to fall. Mac got up and ran a. plucky race, but the team was not able to overcome West Higl1's lead, gained during the fall, although Jarvis, running fourth for us, brought us up to second-place beating Hoyt. Dunagan, Sandler, Gould and Nea- sham in the two mile event put up a good. fight, but were not able to finish in a. winning position. Our hopes for tak- ing the shuttle race were shattered by the fast West High team, which made a rec- ord not likely to be lowered for some time. In the mile relay, Dow Byers as fourth man on the team ran an especially good race and captured third place. The summary of the high school divis- ion is given below: . Half mile-West High first, East High CD. Byers, M. Byers, Green, J arvisj see- ond, Greenfield third. Time, 1 :36 2-5. Two mile-VVest High first, Cedar Rapids second, Mason City third. The third annual interscholastic track carnival given by Simpson college under the management of the S club, May 2, was a. complete success. West High with 45 points won the cup and East High with 35M-5 points -was second. Our nearest competitor was Greenfield with 20W points. We are proud of the fel- lows and what they accomplished. , XVe placed one, two, and three men in all the prelimitnaries and things looked bright. The iii-st event of the afternoon, the 120 yard hurdles, proved to be a tliriller, Captain 'Dow Byers starting his wonderful performance of the day led Hoyt of Greenfield over the last hurdle, but Hoyt managed to pass him on the last stretch and won by inches. The time was good. being 16 2-5 seconds. Green finished third. Dunagan, our distance man, failed to place in the half mile run but after a rest showed that he was good at the longer distance when he placed third in the mile run. Jarvis ran a. strong second to Hoyt i11 the 100 yard dash in which the time was 10 Hat. Through a little misfortune he failed to make so good a showing in the 220, but finished third gaining at every stride. Our pole vaultcrs, Mac Byers, Berg- strom and Gould cleared 9 feet 6 inches, which was better than they had ever done before but they were unable to place. The discus, the half-mile and the quarter were the only other events in which we did not win a point. Hall heaved the shot 2-SS ilfeet lllfg inches, being beaten for third place by one-half inch. All three men entered in thc high jump placed. Byers and Green tied for second with jumps of 5 feet 4 inches. Jarvis tied for fourth with a. Greenfield man by clearing 5 feet 3 inches. Dow, running his usual good race, easily took the low llurdles. Green came in third. 'Dow set a. new mark in the broad jump with 20 feet 5M inches. Yarn, in his first appearance, took fourth. West High '-s team won the .mile relay in which Hough, Hall, Overturf and Ams- berry, running for us, captured fourth place. The half mile relay was won by West High. In the tirst 220, Mellor of West beat Dow for the first time at that distance , Davidson and Jarvis ran good races but could not hold their own 5 Mac gained on the last 220. Dow won individual honors with 1524 points beating Hoyt by one-half point. G-RINNELL INVITATION MEET. Coach Van Liew gave the team a sur- prise when he took them to the Grinnell Invitation, meet, May 17. The fellows did, not arrive until the 100, the mile, the high hurdles, the discus and the 440 had been pulled off, but they jumped right in and took the meet with 40 1-5 points. Captain Byers started our point winning by taking the low hurdles in the remarkable time of 26 4-5 seconds. Dunagan followed suit in the half mile running it in 2:09 3-5. Hoyt Won the 220 but a. little distance in front of Jarvis in the wonderful time of 21 4-5 seconds. The track was in excellent con- dition and everybody broke records. Gould placed second in the pole vault. Dow took an unexpected five points in the shot put, sending it out 37 feet 7 inches. Dunagan, Gould, Sandler and Amsberry ran away from the others in the mile relay and won it in 3:54 3-5. J aryis tied for first in the high jump at 5 feet 5 inches. The first two places in the broad jump were ours, Dow jumping 20 feet 5 inches for first place While llavidson took second. East came in first in the half mile relay but we were disqualified because Jarvis got excited and did not wait to be touched in the twenty foot zone. Grinnell felt that they had a. better relay team than we did so they got up a shuttle race to prove it. But the same men who turned the trick in the half mile relay, Anisberry, Jarvis, Davidson and M. Byers did it again. The time was 48 2-5 seconds. Dow took individual honors with 15 points. r F w A 1 N. w N 4 Y Y 1 1 4 1 w ai :LS ei' 215 .2 ., C859 2.5 'UB 'Q O. SO' U ..! Qi S .. H. 4 THE STATE HIGH SCHOOL MEET. The combined attraction of the state high school meet and the state college meet drew a large crowd to the Stadium, May 24. Ames won in the college division with Iowa second. For the fourth consecutive time West High won first trophy in the high school meet. East High with halt' as many points fin- ished second which is the best we have done for tour years. Although Captain Byers had an ott day and we did not get as many points as we expected, the meet is not at all discouraging considering everything. Jarvis, Mac Byers, Amsberry, Berg- strom, Overturf, Hall, Hunter, Gould and possibly Dunagan will be in school and should be counted upon to bring points to East High when the next state field meet comes ron11d. In the morning preliminarics Jarvis qualified in the 100 and 220 dashes and the high jump. Captain Byers in the two hurdles and Green in the hurdles and high jump. Jarvis started the aifternoon right by beating Mellor of West for second place behind Hoyt of Greenfield. Dunagan kept up the good work in the mile. Tenny of NVest set the pace from the start and Dunagan ran at his heels the whole distance crossing the line in second place. Tenney ran the mile in 4:31 2-5, which is within 4 3-5 seconds of the U. S. interscholastic record. Dunagan has the distinction of running the fastest mile ever run by an East High man. We did not win points in the high hurdles as we expected. Dow Byers was set a. yard at the start and this threw him off his stride, both he and Green failed to place. Mellor of West ran away with the 440 in 51 2-5 seconds. Captains Evans of iWest was second. Dubel, a new man from Sioux City, who won the highs, also took the low sticks and beat out Dow who was doped out to win them. Farnsworth of North placed third, taking the only point his school got in the meet. Tenny lowered the half mile record to 2:2 2-5. Jarvis hindered by a sore leg was un- able to gain a winning place in the 220 which Hoyt won. We were not very strong in the iield events, the only points being won by D. Byers and Green, each taking a second in the broad and high jumps respectively. West High's stars hung up a new record in the mile relay, in which Amsberry, Dunagan, Overturf and Sandler running for us failed to place, and also in the half mile relay in which D. TS rh zmgva My Dear Readers: As exchange ed- itor, I wish to thank the numerous schools for their respective papers which have been received during the past school year. I hope the comments that have appeared under this heading were taken in the same kindly spirit with which they have been given. These little criticisms, which are only expected to appear in this department, are for the good of all. XVe have thoroughly ap- preciated each paper that has come to us and desire their presence on our table the coming year. Il? it 51 Among the papers this month is the very ,attractive Triangle from De- troit, Mich. It is a new exchange, one that should have been with us long ago. The cuts are excellent. As usual the Spectator, Johnstown, Pa., has another original looking cover design. The Spectator gives its idea of why a school paper should be published, viz., with the sole aim of benefitting the student body. Think of the dif- ferent phases of school life that may he represented in the various departments, then consider, each one, your own idea of a model school paper. ilk ill' 5? The Senior Annual ol? the Wo1'lcl, St. Paul, lllinn., is here and its staff is to he most highly commended :lfor the splendid number. The paper is com- plete in every detail. Ill: elif 'Xi Pulse, Cedar Rapids, Iowa: The HOrganizations, in ceimpariison wiith the rest of the paper, seems to take too much space as about one-half is devoted to that department. elif ll? fl? ' We receive another journal from St. Paul, Minn., the Gleam, which runs a close second to the Wo1'lCl. A more careful arrangement of the de- partments would help to make your paper a better appearing one. lg L' l We have moved to our new location on l, ,, SECOND AND WALNUT STREETS, dia ll l rectly north of the postoffice.
