They are a fact of life that your parents never sat down and ex- plained to you. Instead, experi- ence was left to be your teacher. Friendship is usually the root of all ac- tivity at East High. For six hours a day, five days a week, it’s the strongest driv- ing force that makes the time spent here worthwhile. It’s not the school we have become attached to, but the people that have become a part of our lives through- out the school years. This 1974 Orient has been compiled in such a way so as to show how we feel friends have affected our years at East High. They’re indispensible. Like the song says: “You gotta have friends...” DEDICATION Friends and teachers always used to be two separate nouns, But more and more, we have seen them come together into one individual; an individual with dedication and responsibility as a teacher, and with compassion and faithfulness as a friend. On the next few pages, we'd like to show our appreciation to a few of these versatile people by dedicating this yearbook to them. These ar e just a handful of many individuals who have affected our years at East High. They cared, and they showed it. These are the kind of people who make high school life something more than just classes, lunch, and homework; and for this we are grateful. Mr. Kramer — Biology Finding a good teacher at East is an easy thing to do, but finding a teacher that has a genuine concern for the subject and the students is a bit more difficult. Anyone who has had a course with this amazing man will tell you that they giggled through it ... a student will often be found on the edge of his chair just listening to a lecture and absorbing every word. We will al- ways remember Mr. Kramer’s clear compre- hension of his students’ needs and all his finer qualities that made his courses vital and excit- ing. We thank him for a memorable year, and wish for him many more to come. Miss Cappellino — Language Jean Cappellino is more than just a teacher to the stu- dents she has come in contact with. She has befriended them all, and in so doing has made the hours spent with her in study more enjoyable. She has been an inspiration and an asset to us during our years in high school. Thank you, Miss Cappellino. ui Mr. Palleschi — Social Studies Usually there are only one or two kids that have had a teacher, and therefore are able to write about him. In this case, however, everyone knew Mr. Palleschi, and everyone wanted to write about him. He is a very popular person in this school. We think it may have something to do with his consistent presence in the cafeteria. We also thank him for being an excellent history teach- er and a patient, caring friend. Mrs. Follett — Language We know that Mrs. Follett has often wondered how far her capabilities as a teacher have extend- ed to each of her students. But she can be assured j that her personal and inspired methods of teach- ing are what have given her such a fine reputation at East. Her enthusiasm as instructor and as a friend has helped to keep languages alive in this school. Each year her classes grow larger to ac- comodate her growing number of followers. On behalf of all her students we would like to give Mrs. Follett our warmest thanks for her unself- ish contributions to the student body; and to wish her many more years of success and good luck J that she has achieved in her years at East High. Mr. MacCracken — Industrial Arts Mr. MacCracken is a teacher very skilled in his field. His stu- dents know that they are lucky to share in his talents. Aside from his teaching schedule, he has given of his time to print special material for school functions; for instance, Thespian tickets, Mosaic material, Homeroom notices, display signs and school calendars. We thank him for doing more than his share; his unselfishness is the true root of all friendships. Mr. Morrow — Math Mr. Morrow, in addition to being a dedicated teacher, has those special qualities found only in a friend. Patience is a very impor- tant asset for a friend, and especially a teacher of math. When those equations start racing through your head at top speed it’s nice to have a teacher like Mr. Morrow to slow things down to a comprehensible level. High school kids need a teacher that can understand their point of view. Mr. Morrow’s teaching is built on this kind of understanding. Mrs. Slattery — Science Jean Slattery is an asset to our educational system. She is not only a good chemistry teacher. She also acts as counselor and friend to many. Due to her con- cern for everyone, she is a person with few prejudices. Mrs. Slattery is involved in many extracurricular ac- tivities because she is so generous with her time. Those students fortunate enough to come in contact with her will always treasure the time spent with her. Sarubbi Underclassmen make up the majority of the school. They are active participants in every school activity including senior privileges. Without them, East High would be nothing. As seniors see underclassmen studying, competing, or just horsing around, they remember what their own underclass years were like. BASAKING THINGS . AND NEXT YEAR, SOME OF THE UNDERCLASSMEN WILL BE SENIORS . 3 eS Se 1es t 1V1 act 95 A YEAR OF ACTIVITY Some people say that the spirit of East High exists only in its sports. This year’s activities have proven differently. Some clubs, like the Ski Club, Chem Club, and French Club, have always been large; they’ve accumulated a lot of good memo- ries, so they grow more popular every year. But it’s encouraging to see that most of the other clubs are also growing in number. The kids know what they want, and the success of East High’s activities has reflected this. This year has included a rousing debate between Brenda Fraser and Frank Ciaccia (sponsored by the History Forum), Sucker Day, Chess Club Tournaments, Math League Contests, a Metric Week, the traditional Chem Club Christmas Program, a trip to Spain by Spanish Club members, and many, many others.
