Oar Alma Mater dear, to thee we singg May all thy future years S new honors bring: May friends thyebanners raise thy foes grow'less,' All love and praise to our old E. Hg S. For the past four years East has been the center of our educational and social life Through the classes and extra curricular ac t1v1t1es available to us we have learned to be responsible and mature citizens Now that we are about to dissociate ourselves from East High we see how much our life has been influenced and enriched by the commendable faculty and amiable atmos phere of our school As we turn to leave we see the last grains of sand siftingeto the bottom of our hour- glass. These few particles represent the final moments of fifty-six years of joy and anxiety experienced by countless East High alumni. Privileged to be the last class to graduate from this historical educational institution, S comm we, the class of nineteen hundred and fifty- nine, dedicate this ORIENT to our old E. H. S. i 511 5 F53 515 lt is said that time waits for no man it certainly dldnt wait for the class of 59 It seems only months ago that we sudden we must leave From the beginning mens lives have been regulated by the passing of time our class and school are not exceptions Ttme is not always a friend but it has treated East High and our class kindly. Because Time affects us every minute of every day our ORIENT has been planned to show life at East High through the many applications of Time. As the representative of our theme Father Time is our guide through this book of our memorable moments at East. SEN IORS ACTIVITIES ............ SPORTS ................ The principal, as chief administrator, is the sustaining force that regulates the activity of the school, just as a pendulum regulates the movement of a clock. Mr. Clark, in his first year as principal of East High, has shown a facility for recog- nizing and successfully solving the many problems encountered in the supervision of the present school and the organiza- tion of the new school. Mr. Myers, Vice Principal of the Main Building and Mr. Waide, teacher-in- charge of the Annex, are analogous to the hands of our timekeeper. In their administrative jobs, they carry out the policies of the principal. To complete our timepiece, we have the mechanism. This is the part that de- termines its quality. Our teachers and students personify the intricate workings, They determine the school's scholastic and good reputation in the community. Administration MR MYERS Vice Principal MR. WAIDE Teacher-in-Clmrge of Annex Guidance MR. ROLLER MRS. DAVIS The Guidance Department has charge of our future. The counselors help us to plan a program of study that fits in with our special plans for later life. We are fortunate to have Mrs. Davis, Mr. Roller and Mr. Lawrence assisting us in projecting beyond the present. MISS BASSETT While the Guidance Department takes care of our future, the Girls' Advisor, Miss Bassett, and the Boys' Advisor, Mr. Di Clementi, are in charge of our present. Senior Council As time is an important element in our daily lives, so is the Senior Council an important group to the Senior Class, Ambitions and ideas were initiated through the organized planning of the Senior Council. Under the direction of President Anthony Fantuzzo and the advisors, Miss Curran and Mr. Welch, the class en- joyed the many social functions that were provided. Standard Bearers Scholastic achievement is rewarded by the selection of two Seniors who rank the highest in the class. It is a gala affair and the biggest social event of the season in Rochester. The facade of Guthrie's Grill is floodlighted in purple with the marquee in white lights announcing the event. As hostess of the party, Marilyn Brongo, the internationally known play-girl, greets us as we arrive and Rosemary Vento, manager of the Grill, escorts us to our tables and sees that everything is running smoothly. The ballroom, which incidentally has been so beautifully decorated by Camp- anaro 8: Alessi Company, Inc., is a spectacular to behold. As you know, they are the foremost interior decorators of the day. Admiring the decor are jo Padelt and john Russell, the two U. S. Representatives to the United Nations. It looks like a teacher's convention on the other side of the room. Geri Polvino, Pat Bulmer, Donna Pagano, Walter Schreck and Dick Piccirilli seem to be discussing the latest teaching methods used at their ultra-modern schools. Speaking of teaching, here comes Linda Morey owner of the Morey Dancing School Chain, who will demonstrate the latest dances with the help of Charles Stallman, our ambassador to Belgium. There is janet Grana, the girl with the gray-flannel couch, psychoanalyzing Dave Schlageter, President of Corporal Motors Company, Inc. Bob Marino the shipping magnate has been cornered by jeanne Versprille, one of the dental hygienists who is examining his partial plates. The entertainment is to be provided by Tom Powell's Big Band with an even bigger sound and those world-famous chorus girls: Elaine Galante, Marlene Sala- mone, Dolores Congelosi, Phyllis Filippi, Marianne Utz, Pat Maybee, and Irene Nicolaides. For the first number they will dance to String of Pearls. Alan Nitz- man, who is the master of ceremonies of his own TV show, will tell a few Nitzy jokes. Mary Jane Burnett, Her Honor the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, has just arrived in her pink Model T with the Prosecuting Attorney, Peter Royle. Taking her picture is joy Connolly, first lady president of Kodak. Getting material for his syndicated newspaper, we find Peter Clark taking notes on the proceedings. The ballroom is quite full now and the entertainment is about to start. Up goes the curtain as we hear the beginning chorus of our Old Alma Mater being sung by all. 44 FWUPHEEY MC? 5,0 P 55 Fm io' ,egg 'lf 'f ff ... 4 7 1 last will anh estament We, the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-nine, being of sound mind and body do hereby bequeath the following: Elaine Galante leaves with a real cool ice pack on her weary brow. Rosemary Vento leaves French III never having met Miss Neun. Peter Royle leaves a needle and thread to his hockey team. janet Grana leaves her Liquid center cough drops to Pat Miller. RAH! Marilyn Brongo leaves her many assets to a talented junior girl. foyce Campanaro leaves tons and tons of decorations for anyone who plans to have a Carnival. Jerry Phundtner After five weeks of rehearsing, the Class of 1959 proudly presented their Senior play, Ever Since Eve. Under the direction of Mr. Dolan, the curtain went up on March 6 and 7. The story was based upon the problems of a high school newspaper editor, johnny Clover, and his friend Spud. Complications set in when an English teacher decided that the paper ought to have Susan Blake as co-editor. The situation is very upsetting to the boys until a southern dish, Lucybelle Lee, arrived to set them all awhirl. Everyone, even the town hero and football captain, Preston Hughes is at- tracted by this lovely female, all except Susan. With the help of Spud's sister, Betsy, Susan managed to get the newspaper staff into trouble with the police. Just in time, their friend, Officer Simmons, saved everyone from a jail sentence. Finally the air clears, and Susan gets Johnny. Lucybelle gets Spud, and the females triumph once again Ever Since Eve. Spud, we've got a problem! Susan gets reprimanded You can't do that, I'm almost married to you. Lucybelle and the Football Squad. 46 i a s 1 f GARRY COULTER President Front Row: F. Calhoun, P. Julian, M. Palermo, B. Gibson, S. This presentation is written and directed by Mr. Dolan. The Performance, which was on April 24 and 25, concerned a boy-crazy girl who drove her wealthy father to dis- traction. The plot thickens when some gangsters kidnapped her and held her for ransom. Much to everyone's surprise, her father was happy and refused to pay the ransom. He demanded the gangsters to pay him to take his daughter back. She was so much of a problem that the gangsters were very happy to pay in order to get rid of her. However, they didn't have the money. With the aid of the young lady, they robbed the father's safe and paid him his ransom with his own money. A happy ending evolved when one of the mobsters fell in love with the daughter, and they lived happily ever after. Senior Chorus Line Mr. Dolan-Our Producer 67 Among these walls . . The East High Frogmen came up with a record to be proud of for a team that has the disadvantage of having no home pool facilities. The team showed an improvement over last season. Coach Morse with the assistance of Charles Achilles, a cadet teacher, guided the new squad and worked with them until they were experi- enced and ended the season successfully. Seniors leaving the squad are: Victor Masters, Peter Roy, John Williamson, and John Stratton. East's Junior Varsity Basketball team entered competition with hopes for a high finish and per- haps even a championship. Coach Graham drilled his spirited charges for many hours with the fundamentals of the game. Although the J.V.'s didn't win a champion- ship, they gained valuable experience this year. These stars of tomorrow's varsity promise to be a great club in the future. J. V. BASKETBALL-Third Row: D, Adair, H. Spotford, J. Spampinato, P. DiMarco, R. Regali, C. Daly, W. Cordell, H. Brown, D. The Orientals were lacking in height with no one topping the 6 ft. mark, but they made up for it in drive and determination. In the first half campaign, Fast sported a tie for third place with a 5-5 record. East faltered at the opening gun of the second half and finally wound up the season with 8 wins and 8 losses. Being lost through graduation are many who made the nucleus of the team. They are: F. Lia- cono, F. Mundorff, D. Gantt, and D. Marker. restling East's famed matmen showed up with a fine record considering their competition. Their record does not show the great amount of work that was put in by Coach Anthony Beisman and the wrestlers. The squad was very strong except in the upper-weight divisions. Going all the way for East to win the city championships and sectionals was the team's most outstanding wrestler, Tony Fantauzo, in the 112 pound class. A large group of sopomores will be coming back next year to form the backbone of what should be an excellent team. Wrestling their last East meet are T. Fantuzzo, L. La Rosa, S. Nicihitta, A.
