CI-IOOI It was lust 50 years ago when the 1200 students of the Rochester High School returned from their Easter vacation to take possessron of their new but not completed school building As Mr Wilcox sa1d masons to the right of them plumbers to the left of them electrrcians in front of them volley d and thunder df Twelve hundred students 1n a school built to accommodate a thousand' They found awartlng them a beaut1ful new building that was the last word xn school constructzon It boasted an auditorrum two gyms and a lunchroom all were almost unknown in American schools half a century ago The students who marveled at their new school quickly initiated the student life that has become an rmportant part of the HCEIVIIICS of their innumerable successors An early description of the school found in a 1903 Clarion was as follows East High School stands on Alexander Street between University Avenue and Main Street East The building consists of a main part and two wings The wing nearest University Avenue IS the girls part and that toward Mam Street is the boys There is a front door in each wmg and two doors to the main part The bicycle rooms are farther back on each side In the basement are the lockers gyms lunchroom and showerbaths On the first floor are besrdes varlous study and recitation rooms the principal s office his secretary s ofiice the library and the magmficent assembly hall The second floor IS given up entirely to study rooms and recitation rooms with the exception of the gallery of the assem bly hall On the third floor are more study and recita t1on rooms the physics zoology and chemistry laboratories and the offices of the Clarron Alto I C gether there are sixty five rooms The system of ventilation 15 a very elaborate and complete one There is a system of electric clocks and telephones reaching almost every room in the building The crowning feature of the building the assembly hall seats about 1100 people Drinking fountains are found on each floor There are four flights of wide stanrs and in fact almost every modern convenience When the building IS finished lt will indeed be a model for educational IHSIIIUIIOUS of the kind to copy In 1907 West High School was buxlt Much rivalry soon developed between the two schools as a result of the West vs East football game of that year Track baseball football and basketball were the original sports The teams schedules 1ncluded high schools in western New York and the freshman teams of the University of Rochester and several other colleges Orr mally the teams were supported dlrectly by the stu ents until 1906 when the Board of Education first began to provide funds for athletics Intense rivalry led to gambling which in turn led to lnsistence by the parents that football be elrmmated from the high schools By 1923 East High became so crowded that it was necessary to split the school day Half the pupils came in the morning and half in the afternoon with two hecnc periods near noon with all thirty six hun dred students attending There were two annexes one on Goodman Street in an old gum factory and one on Umversity Avenue This situation continued until 1930 when Franklin H1gh School opened and took many of the extra students from East Another East Hrgh School first is the soc1al science laboratory which was 1n1t1ated in 1924 Throughout the years East Hngh School s teachers have been in the forefront of educational progress The names of many members of the faculty constitute a chapter IH the history of education in America There are several interesting features about the school which are unknown to most of us In one of the rooms 1n the back of the school there 15 found an elevator or dumb walter as it was called which ran from the basement to the thlrd floor Although unused today many years ago it served the purpose of carry mg supplies for the faculty Hidden beneath a trap door in the basement is a stream which flowed on this property many years before East High existed The school was built rlght over the stream' For fifty years the lofty ivy covered towers have stood as a symbol of digmry and respect We shall always cherish the memorxes of our beloved East High School ff l , - - -1 . . . . . , . . . , , 1 1 - 1 1 .1 . . . . . , , . . . . . . . . . . . ,, 1 1 . . . . . , - 1 1 1 , . , . .. . . . 1 ' 1 1 . . , . . . , . . . . .
