We feel this loss very keenly for they were an active part of our lives at East High School and we pray that the time will not be long before they will be able to return. While Americans speak jealously of their rights, they do not always remember that the best way to safeguard these liber- ties is to observe just as carefully the duties of a good citizen. The practice of self con- trol, tolerance, fairness, reason, and initi- ative is the foundation of democracy, and all the victorious battles, all the American lives lost would be to no avail should the citizens of the United States fail to realize this fact. As defenders of the home front it is our obligation to the boys facing the guns to perform the dufiu as well as to enjoy the rigbtr of our democracy. Each American's most precious treasure is his personal freedom. It is that liberty which enables him to pick up his evening paper, shout threateningly at the newsboy to Throw the pa er on the porch, not in the bushes, and, proceed to read the truth. Every time he attends a public meet- ing, worships in his own church, or even turns on his radio he is enjoying the privi- leges of a democracy. If he were asked whether he would be willing to defend these privileges he would undoubtedly answer indignantly, You bet your life I would ! And yet, unconsciously, all of us often forget that we must be vigilant. Democrac was never bought cheaply. Blood and, sweat and tears, lives of loved ones, and years of struggle are the price we have paid and arestill paying, for our freedom . . . for our rights. , J' Y' I 4 4 -Q NN 4' s. ,N QQXNNN I JJ A 5 ,,1f1fZjijNQXRt XN ! ouriak fke jfumlnefa . We've been told that seniors never really appreciate their school days until they have had time to reminisce in later years. We Won't have to wait until after we've been graduated to realize and appreciate what Mrs. Toolan, as one of our advisors, has done for the Class of 1945. Long after the memories of teachers and school chums have faded, we'll still remember the cheerful personality of the woman who urged us on to success with her calm, though ambitious, nature. It is diihcult for us to express our gratitude for all the many kindnesses of Mr. Clark. His ready smiles and quiet understanding have helped us overcome innumerable prob- lemsAsome small and some not so small-but all made easier to cope with because of his untiring efforts. He has been an able advisor as Well as a staunch friend to all the seniors. Mrs. Toolan and Mr. Clark, We, the Class of 1945, Wish we could thank you adequately for your faithful guidance. Without your expert assistance many of our undertakings would not have been the successes they were. No one will ever take your place in our hearts. 6
