And who could ever forget the proud, prancing white horses, or the bearded lady, or the daring trapese artists? The circus is a symbolee a symbol of all the carefree abandon, the unbridled pleasures of youth. Now in our nation's present state of turmoil, many of these frivolous amusements have been forsaken for more serious pur- suits. It will naturally be hard to recapture that former light-heartednessg but just as inevitably as the dashing lion trainer and whimsical clowns will always remain a bright, sunny spot in our memories, so with spring the circus will return again. 44? lm JITIIIW fll I! While Americans speak jealously of their rights, they do not always remember that the best way to safeguard these liber- ties is to observe just as carefully the duties of a good citizen. The practice of self con- trol, tolerance, fairness, reason, and initi- ative is the foundation of democracy, and all the victorious battles, all the American lives lost would be to no avail should the citizens of the United States fail to realize this fact. As defenders of the home front it is our obligation to the boys facing the guns to perform the dufiu as well as to enjoy the rigbtr of our democracy. Each American's most precious treasure is his personal freedom. It is that liberty which enables him to pick up his evening paper, shout threateningly at the newsboy to Throw the pa er on the porch, not in the bushes, and, proceed to read the truth. Every time he attends a public meet- ing, worships in his own church, or even turns on his radio he is enjoying the privi- leges of a democracy. If he were asked whether he would be willing to defend these privileges he would undoubtedly answer indignantly, You bet your life I would ! And yet, unconsciously, all of us often forget that we must be vigilant. Democrac was never bought cheaply. Blood and, sweat and tears, lives of loved ones, and years of struggle are the price we have paid and arestill paying, for our freedom . . . for our rights. , J' Y' I 4 4 -Q NN 4' s. ,N QQXNNN I JJ A 5 ,,1f1fZjijNQXRt XN ! We've been told that seniors never really appreciate their school days until they have had time to reminisce in later years. We Won't have to wait until after we've been graduated to realize and appreciate what Mrs. Toolan, as one of our advisors, has done for the Class of 1945. Long after the memories of teachers and school chums have faded, we'll still remember the cheerful personality of the woman who urged us on to success with her calm, though ambitious, nature. It is diihcult for us to express our gratitude for all the many kindnesses of Mr. Clark. His ready smiles and quiet understanding have helped us overcome innumerable prob- lemsAsome small and some not so small-but all made easier to cope with because of his untiring efforts. He has been an able advisor as Well as a staunch friend to all the seniors. Mrs. Toolan and Mr. Clark, We, the Class of 1945, Wish we could thank you adequately for your faithful guidance. Without your expert assistance many of our undertakings would not have been the successes they were. No one will ever take your place in our hearts. 6 MRS. FLORENCE TOOLAN MR. CHARLES N. WOLGAST Ska 7 rinciloa A eadage . . Greetings to the Class of 1945: We congratulate you on the successful completion of your high school course and we extend our best wishes to you in your future plans. You entered high school in September, 1941, and in December the treachery of Pearl Harbor occurred. Following that came the feverish preparation of this country to produce munitions and the organization of a large fighting force. The results of those efforts are apparent in our War effort to an astounding degree. During your high school course much of your thought and energy have gone to aiding this undertaking. That you have persevered in your high school course when for nearly four years the nation has been busy with a global War is deserving of high praise. The war is not yet ended but our hopes are high for its termination in the near future. Many members of your class have already entered the armed services and others will be entering after graduation. To them We are grateful beyond Words for the part they are taking in this catastrophe of our times. We begin to look forward to a time of peace that will be worthy of the sacrifices that have been made. We hope and pray that our thoughts and actions then will match those shown in the prosecution of the War, and that a genuine desire to bring about greater democracy for all peoples will really follow. To lessen race prejudice, to bring about more tolerance, to gain greater economic security for all people, to achieve the blessings of freedom-to help bring about flame conditions of peace is my charge to the Class of 1945. 9 Cllluhy . . . The first day of high school when we trembled at the thought of not making good at the annex, our search for new classrooms, and the new faces, the strange teachers, and the homevvorkferemember? Life was quite a whirl at first, but we adjusted ourselves without too much difficulty and settled down with determination to make a name for ourselves in East High School. Then, remember how we looked forward to becoming a part of the main building, and how we timidly dreaded leaving our familiarity with the annex to enter the portals of a strange building? We felt very insignificant at first, but after we had become accustomed to our new surroundings, we began to like the place a little. The choosing of our advisors and the election of class officers really made us a part of this new life. As juniors, we upperclassmen became more active in extracurricular affairs. We had parties and dances, and plans were under way even then for our senior year. Long before June of that year we were able to exhibit proudly our class rings and pins. When we suddenly discovered that we were already seniors, we didn't feel so different. Yet we began to realize how short our stay at East High had seemed and how rapidly the remaining months would pass. Every moment of pleasure was precious, and we treasured the memories of the dances and the plays and the fun. Graduation was like a dream. It was almost impossible to believe that the gates of our little world were closing behind us, pushing us into a greater world beyond. We can't express what these four wonderful years have meant to us, but we shall forever hold the tender memories of those carefree days locked tightly in our hearts. 14 enior ounci . . . Once upon a midnight bleary, while he wondered, sad and weary, O'er what the Fates were to contrive for East High's Class of '45- While he nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping at Bruce Thompson's chamber door, It's some visitor, he muttered, tapping at my chamber door-Q Perhaps from him I'll learn some more. Open here he flung the shutter, when, with many a lisp and stutter, In there stepped Gerard J. Guli of the Senior Class of yore. Hi ya, Bruce. His greeting given, by prophetic fury driven, As though by some strange sign, he read what was on Bruce's mind. B.
