FGREWORD In days of old, pirates roamed the seven seas, gay, colorful men, dashing, daring, gallant men, men who fought for the spoils of battle, men who fought for the sheer sport of fighting, men who lived and died with equal recklessness. These hardy men had weaponse-the accepted weapons of their day. A cutlass, a pistol, a poniard provided them with protection sufficient for any occasion that might arise, and a ship of sturdy oaken beams, flying the dread skull and cross-bones, carried them whither they might go. They fought fearlessly and skillfully against overwhelming odds, but because they violated the rules of honest endeavor, were doomed to ex- tinction. This, too, is a bold age, an age of glorious adventure and of bitter struggle.
